The Zavarai family, also known as the Zavarai dynasty or House Zavarai while it ruled the Sith Empire and Galactic Commonwealth, was a Human family native to Coruscant. The family came to galactic notoriety when Caspian Zavarai, the former apprentice of Darth Baras was appointed the Emperor's Wrath. Caspian later became one of the most well-known figures in the galaxy after he ascended to the throne of the Sith Empire, and later succeeded in conquering the Galactic Republic, a feat no earlier Sith had accomplished.
The first member of the family to come to prominence was Theresa Zavarai, who was elected to to Congress of Coruscant, and eventually became its president for ten years. Her daughter Mara Zavarai followed in her footsteps and also entered politics, also being elected to the Congress of Coruscant and later becomings its president. She married the journalist Kay Iraseth, who adopted Mara's surname as his second surname, and had a son with him, Caspian. During the Sacking of Coruscant, Mara and Kay were killed by the Darth Regius, who abducted their son Caspian and made him his apprentice. Caspian's grandmother Theresa and other members of the family were informed about their deaths and were inconsolable. Though Caspian's body was never found, the Republic presumed him dead, and Theresa mourned her grandson's loss as well.
Caspian became a powerful Sith Lord and began a romantic relationship with his ally Liana Ascalia, eventually marrying her. The couple had six children: their firstborn son Sky and quintuplets: Linus, Garlan, Seth, Morgana and Athena. In 3640 BBY, Caspian was appointed the Empire's Wrath and news about his survival and his transformation into one of the most pre-eminent Sith reached the general public of the Republic. When Theresa was informed about this, she was shocked and horrified to see it was her grandson, as she recognized his face, which nearly looked identical to his father's. Her grandson's survival did not make Theresa happy, but instead greatly saddened her, as he now served the sworn enemy of the Republic. In 3628 BBY, Caspian and Liana overthrew Darth Acina, seizing the throne of the Sith Empire and becoming emperor and empress. As a result, the Zavarai family became known galactically. Theresa and her family became victim to criticism and discrimination, with many in the Republic calling the family traitors. Caspian's cousin, Connor Zavarai, Senator of Coruscant, faced many calls for him to resign.
As a result of the many reforms that Emperor Caspian implemented in the Sith Empire, many people in the Republic came to believe that perhaps peace with the Empire was not impossible. Although Caspian's cousin Connor remained staunchly opposed to any peace treaty with the Sith, with his fanatic anti-Sith ideology allowing him to win the nomination for chancellor of the Democratic Alliance for Galactic Liberation.
Although the incumbent chancellor, Sanura Hotepshen was favored to win re-election, the Sith Empire invaded Coruscant mere hours before the election for Supreme Chancellor. As a result, Chancellor Sanura was universally condemned for allowing the Sith Empire to exploit her idealism, and received not a single vote. The Galactic Senate instead elected Connor Zavarai as the next Supreme Chancellor, although before he could be sworn in, the election was interrupted by Liana Ascalia, who mentally dominated the senators and forced them to elect her chancellor instead.
