Development[]

The storyline of The Suppression stemmed from a need in the larger Golden Age of the Republic series to extrapolate the political climate surrounding the Seswenna Security Crisis. The despotic leader, B'Rhea, was named as an homage to the Star Wars Fanon administrator and contributor, Brandon Rhea. The backstory for his political nemesis was provided in part by the administrator Solus, and the leader of the Arrain Makila was named for the user. Part of Casei Solus's backstory was her execution, which became the focus of the short story.

Rather than create another story in the same manner as the novels, The Suppression and other short stories in the series were crafted as first-person reflections on key events in the individual's history. For The Suppression, B'Rhea was selected as the orator of the moments surrounding his "final victory" over the Arrain Makila by executing its leader. The intent was to execute the story by imbuing it with the intents and motivations of one of the major participants. It was also desired to have this seemingly limited view, hoping that the isolated perspective also brought to the fore the motivations and personalities of the characters that played a role in the larger metastory.
