The Other Outcast is either a short story or a novella hurriedly written by MPK of the Star Wars Fanon Wiki. Taking place in the aftermath of Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, it tells the tale of Rune Chamra, one of the Reborn followers of the Dark Jedi Desann. Upon learning of Desann's death at Yavin 4, Rune begins to doubt his own beliefs and loyalty to the Empire. Soon after, a New Republic attack on Cairn Base challenges him to pursue a new destiny for himself. The first draft of the story was released on July 3, 2020. A revision of the text was completed on July 12.

Ideally, one will have a basic familiarity with the events of Jedi Outcast before reading.

The Other Outcast
Peace and justice in the galaxy are once again in jeopardy. Eight years after the Battle of Endor, the weakened Galactic Empire seemed on the verge of restoration through the alliance of Admiral Galak Fyyar and the Dark Jedi Desann. Leading an army of Force-wielding warriors known as the REBORN, the new Imperial champions launched a daring assault on the Jedi Academy at Yavin 4.

But victory at Yavin was sabotaged by the traitorous KYLE KATARN, and Fyyar and Desann have gone down in defeat, leaving the remnants of their forces reeling under a renewed onslaught by the vengeful New Republic.

At CAIRN BASE in the Lenico Belt, a handful of the Reborn prepare to evacuate with other Imperial forces. Among them is RUNE CHAMRA, a survivor of Kyle Katarn's assault on the facility...

Excerpt[]

Rune was only meters away from the Sullustan when the Force again saved him at the last second; he ducked, only hearing the dopplerling wwrum of yet another lightsaber as it stabbed at him from above, missing his head and shoulders but leaving one ear ringing.

His new assailant landed in a crouch nearby: a male Human whose dark hair was tied back in a short ponytail—an example of New Republic decadence if there ever was one. Rune moved on him at once; in wordless synchronicity he was joined by Koresh, and the two slashed and stabbed from two directions at once. The Jedi gave ground, but his every step was measured as he expertly spun his sky-blue saber to parry.

The two Reborn didn’t relent, pressing the lone Jedi out toward the edge of the loading dock, away from his allies. Behind them, the melee began to spread itself out, dividing into several smaller duels.

Abruptly the Jedi broke away and ran, his long strides carrying him to a corner of the platform, where several narrow, rail-less catwalks reached some distance out into the chasm.

"Where are you going, Jedi?!" jeered Koresh, his voice high and gleeful.

"Just getting a better view of the place!" the other man retorted. Reaching the beginning of the catwalk, he pointed his blade in challenge and beckoned. "Care to join me?"

Rune barked out a harsh laugh as he and Koresh Force-leaped across the platform and renewed their assault.

Behind the scenes[]

Work on The Other Outcast was begun in response to the unveiling of the Summer 2020 Short Story Contest, and to the author's stalled work on the much-longer sequel to Torchbearer. Its premise was heavily inspired by the Jedi Academy single-player mod Eve of Redemption, which also has a Reborn as the protagonist.

Various details and events are intended as nods to the gameplay of Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, including the Reborn's propensity for taunting and jeering at their opponents, as well as the frequency of characters being killed or incapacitated by being thrown off of ledges.

The author's love of Imperial-centric stories stems primarily from a childhood spent playing the 1994 flight-sim Star Wars: TIE Fighter.
