"You called us before the battle, Masters?" Tirien hinted. Narasi felt the weight of that cold stare leave her, and looked back to find Master Kadych studying Tirien. "Yes. You're going to Byblos." He added nothing more, and after a moment Tirien asked, "…indefinitely?" "We hope not," Master La'altac said. "A Jedi needs your help." Narasi perked up. "Did he ask for us specifically, Master?" "He did not ask for help at all," Master Kadych corrected. "But under the circumstances," Master La'altac added, "we think it would be best." "And what are the circumstances?" Tirien asked. "His name is Javrin Flek. Do you know him?" Tirien shook his head. "Should I?" "If you did, he would have done something wrong," Master Kadych observed. His eyes had tightened with what Narasi would have thought some sort of dark humor if she had thought Master Kadych capable of that emotion. "He's a Jedi Shadow." |

Plot Summary[]
For weeks Tirien Kal-Di and Narasi Rican have been aboard the Crescentia, helping the Republic Navy fight the forces of Zirist Lakalt, but after another battle they are summoned before the praxeum ship's Jedi Council. The Council sends master and Padawan to Byblos to aid the Jedi Shadow Javrin Flek. En route, Tirien confides his distaste for Jedi Shadows and the broad feeling among Jedi Consulars that they stray too close to the line between light and dark.
The Jedi make contact with Flek, who briefs them on a group of Sith agents he has been tracking, though he and Tirien are at odds over the need for elaborate secrecy and subtlety. Tirien and Narasi accompany Javrin to the alleged exchange, but discover that the "Sith collaborators" are a group of secondary school students; one of them stole the Sith artifacts from his father, a university professor, to impress his friends. Tirien confiscates the artifacts and plans to turn the boys over to the Judicials, but Javrin, convinced they are Sith, menaces them with his lightsaber, demanding information.
A tense standoff becomes a brief fight, but Tirien disarms Javrin and takes him into custody, surrendering him to other Jedi for transport back to the Jedi Temple. As they leave Byblos aboard the Second Chance, Tirien admits to Narasi that he is not sure the mission was a success; although they prevented anyone from being murdered and recovered dangerous dark side artifacts, Tirien wonders whether he pushed Javrin deeper into paranoia and the dark side.
On Byblos, the parents of the boy who stole the artifacts chide him for his immaturity and irresponsibility, after which the father, Professor Althos, goes in to the university to do damage control. There Althos—who actually is a Sith sleeper agent who allowed his son to steal the artifacts in the hopes that they could corrupt the sons of influential Republic officers and industry leaders—contacts his Sith handler to admit the plan's failure and obtain further instructions. At the Sith's command, Professor Althos continues in his cover, settling in to write a new week of lesson plans.
