In a way, The Balancing Act—in combination with There Be Dragons which it takes place immediately after—serves as a "season 1" finale for the Vergence storyline as it wraps up many of the ongoing plotlines—namely the Malvis Cabal and Valrisa plotlines—while setting up a new "status quo" for the next phase of the story, which will take place a year after The Balancing Act.
Beaumont Kin was intended to have a larger role in the story, hence his presence as a member of Poe's team on Darkknell, but due to the author taking a brief hiatus from the story due to real life matters, his role was ultimately dropped as the author ended up forgetting about him in favor of more important plotlines in the narrative.
