Old Republic era

Tem-Fol-Rytil was a male Cerean Jedi Master. Living and serving during the New Sith Wars, he pursued the path of a Jedi Consular. Despite that contemplative focus, he was a sufficiently skillful warrior and champion of the light that even the pragmatic, results-oriented Jedi Sentinel Suwo Tolp held him in high regard. As Grand Master of the Jedi Order from 1,391 BBY on, he often struggled to balance the Jedi Order's need to direct the war against the Sith with the importance of not wholly usurping control of the Republic from the Galactic Senate. Nevertheless, he maintained close advisory relationships with Supreme Chancellors Phnyong and Nulu Thini, both his former High Council colleagues. Tem-Fol-Rytil was also an influential voice in favor of several promising young Knights, including Tirien Kal-Di and Raina and Raven Kaivalt.

Biography[]

Early service[]

As a Jedi Knight, Tem-Fol-Rytil chose to specialize as a Jedi Consular. At some point between 1,400 BBY and 1,391 BBY, he was elevated to the Jedi High Council; by 1,391 BBY, he was one of its life members. He had trained two Jedi to Knighthood, though one was later killed in battle with the Sith. He proposed knighting Tirien Kal-Di after the Mission to Thisspias.

Grand Master[]

At some point over the following two years, Jedi Grand Master Ogan Broze died, and the Council unanimously voted Tem-Fol-Rytil the new Master of the Order. On the fervent counsel of the Jedi Seers, Tem-Fol-Rytil directed Tirien to take Narasi Rican as his Padawan. When Tirien considered exercising the Right of Denial rather than complying, Tem-Fol-Rytil was deeply unnerved, and promised to devote additional contemplation of his own to the Force's will in the matter. A week later, he dispatched Tirien and Narasi to Taanab to protect Senator Glavial Iltek from a Sith assassination plot.

As Master of the Order and a peer of the Supreme Chancellor, Tem-Fol-Rytil was conscious of the need for the Jedi Council to project strength to both the rest of the Order and the Republic at large. He was willing to overlook Mali Darakhan's somewhat disastrous 1,387 BBY mission to Milagro given Darakhan's expected support of the Order in a conclave of Corellian Jedi called by Master Tyson Dumiel. Following Supreme Chancellor Phnyong's assassination in late 1,387 BBY, Vice Chancellor Vero Corruss technically led the Republic, but Tem-Fol-Rytil met with him almost daily and sought to find a new Jedi Supreme Chancellor to address the fractures that had appeared in the Republic; he sought advice from many beings, including Tirien, and tried to assist Tirien in turn as Tirien struggled to recover his Force powers.

After considering numerous candidates, including Elata Cazars and Nawsa Arodion, Tem-Fol-Rytil ultimately joined the entire Council in nominating Nulu Thini, who was elected by the Senate. With Darth Saleej and Vedya Gasald both pressing the Republic, Tem-Fol-Rytil accepted the need to deploy many Jedi Masters against the Sith, but worried about the risk to the Temple of having too few powerful Jedi left behind; Tirien had recovered his Force powers after a mission to Vjun, and Tem-Fol-Rytil considered him for a teaching post. While Tirien weighed the idea, the Council dispatched him to Alderaan to liaise with King Rosulus Organa and prevent Alderaan from withdrawing its delegation to the Senate.

Herding cats[]

After the Seventy-Second Republic Battle Group was lost at the Battle of Eriadu, Tem-Fol-Rytil and Nulu Thini concurred that the Republic should set up defenses rather than fight Gasald for Allanteen, though Tem-Fol-Rytil nearly faced a mutiny in the Jedi Council over the argument. When Tirien Kal-Di and Raven Kaivalt led a mission to assassinate Gasald anyway, Tem-Fol-Rytil felt unsure how to respond; the Battle of Allanteen was a major Republic victory, and Gasald was missing and presumed dead. He was even more disquieted when Tirien took a Barash vow and disappeared into exile.

Mere days later, the Sith struck the Commenori Economic Roundtable, assassinating Galera and Satir Solo despite Nawsa Arodion's attempts to protect them. Tem-Fol-Rytil journeyed to Commenor, where he clashed with Tyson Dumiel and attempted to assist Nawsa in healing Galera; when he realized their efforts were in vain, he convinced Nawsa to stop and let Galera die in peace. Dispatched to Corellia by Nulu as a Republic dignitary for the funeral, Tem-Fol-Rytil met with Sil Kadych, who was still convalescing onworld and made no secret of his belief that the Corellian Jedi were dangerous as schismatics. With that perspective, Tem-Fol-Rytil successfully persuaded Nawsa to remain on the High Council rather than throwing in with the Green Jedi.

Tem-Fol-Rytil generally supported Tirien's decision to remain in the Eighth Republic Expeditionary Fleet, supporting Mali Darakhan in his war with Valin Aresh. Nonetheless, he and Thini assigned Tirien and Narasi Rican to hunt down the Breld Syndicate; he was concerned by Tirien's alliance with Darth Alecto to defeat Argus Z'dar during the Mission to Malachor Base, advising Tirien to purge himself of attachments stemming from the destruction of Bogg 14. After Elata Cazars died and Mali led an unsanctioned mission which resulted in Aresh's death, Tem-Fol-Rytil counseled Zaella Sabir on finding a new master, then successfully (albeit not without contention) persuaded the High Council to appoint Sil Kadych to fill Cazars's vacancy.

While the Conscription Act debate raged in the Senate, Tem-Fol-Rytil struggled to advise both Nulu Thini on the Forceful aspects of the debate and Nawsa Arodion on her growing premonitions. When Arodion was killed in a duel with Darth Alecto, Tem-Fol-Rytil grieved her passing and sent Tairni Tre'go to Corellia to attend her funeral. He, along with the rest of the Council, promoted Mali Darakhan to Jedi Master. The Council sent Mali, Tirien, and Narasi to Quellor to help quell civil disturbances over conscription, but he was troubled a week later when Tirien contacted him—and him alone—to announce his decision to leave Mali's Eighth Fleet and move from place to place with Narasi in the interest of training her more thoroughly.

Powers and abilities[]

Tem-Fol-Rytil possessed such strength in the Force that the High Council chose him to replace Ogan Broze as Grand Master. He was able to deflect blaster bolts by hand, a rare feat even among Jedi.

Appearance and personality[]

Tem-Fol-Rytil had fair skin, green eyes, and black hair, though his hair grayed as he grew older. Including his domed head, he was taller than most Humans and Near-Humans. He wore a mustache and a soul patch goatee. As a Jedi Consular, he carried a lightsaber with a green blade.

In general, Tem-Fol-Rytil was a man of even, calm disposition, which served him as Master of the Order when he had to balance the temperaments—and, occasionally, tempers—of his fellow High Council Masters. Though committed to the way of the Jedi, he was also a political realist who accepted the need for the Jedi to involve themselves in the Republic's governance so as to better counter the threat of the Sith. He favored central authority for the Order, which led him to clashes with Karr Shadeez, the Tapani and Corellian Jedi, and, occasionally, Tirien Kal-Di.
