System Lord was a title in the Sith Empire before the rise of the Galactic Republic. The title was bestowed by the Emperor on an individual who was strong in the Force and helped the Emperor rule the Empire. Only seven System Lords could be named at any one time and the title could only be passed on by the Emperor.
