Plot summary[]

The novel starts off with the Turbulent-class Star Destroyer Glory in space, suddenly the Antaeus drops out of hyperspace above it and activates its retractor beam, using it to lower Royal Troopers on top of the Glory. The Royal Troopers float down to the hangar bay and use an unidentified tool to cut through the hangar's shield, then make their way inside and retrieve the tool. They then proceed to quickly kill all of the Imperials on board with poison gas and change into their uniforms.

Emperor Jagged Fel and Empress Jaina Solo Fel soon arrive on the ship via shuttle, unaware of what transpired. The two are escorted from the shuttle by disguised Royal Troopers, and soon arrive at a corridor to find Darth Vidious waiting. Darth Vidious demands that the Emperor and Empress surrender; both refuse and a lightsaber duel between Jaina and Vidious ensues. The duel is swiftly brought to an end when Jaina's lightsaber hilt gets clipped by Vidious' lightsaber, which destroys the focusing lens. Jagged flees at Jaina's behest, which in turn causes Vidious to order the blast doors sealed. Jagged narrowly escapes through the closing blast doors.

Jagged guns down four Royal Troopers that intervene before climbing aboard an escape pod. He launches the pod and crash lands in the middle of Crag Way on Yinchorr. Having calculated the escape pod's trajectory, Commander Fost asks Vidious if a garrison should be dispatched to capture Fel on Yinchorr. Vidious exclaims that the Skywalker bloodline is his target and that the Emperor is of no concern and can be considered out of play as he is in Protectorate territory now.

Jagged dizzily exits the escape pod and wanders through Crag Way. After braving sandstorms that had been conjured up by the planet for hours he hears rumbling, which causes him to look down towards the sand and see movement coming toward him. He climbs onto a rock pile to get out of the way and watches as a Chorr Worm shoots out of the sand poised to attack. He quickly pulls out his blaster and fires off several shots while it charges him, narrowly avoiding the worm's grasp by jumping out of the way, it smashes against the rock pile causing it to get dizzy. While looking for a solution, Jagged notices a mysterious figure watching from a cliff up above, the figure urges Jagged to steady his hand and aim for the brain by shooting through the roof of the Chorr Worm's mouth. Jagged waits for it to turn around and try to swallow him, he fires having his shot bore through the soft tissue in the roof of the Chorr's mouth and into its brain, which kills it instantly.

The mysterious figure makes his way down the cliff and introduces himself as Adrax Tarsus and offers the Emperor shelter, Fel accepts and the duo makes their way to the Lungert Settlement, upon arrival they find everyone at the settlement dead and the buildings ablaze. Adrax catches a glimpse of Royal Troopers in the distance and channels his anger which causes him to let out a Force Scream that causes the Royal Troopers to disintegrate. Adrax reveals to Fel that there is a Protectorate base nearby that he has infiltrated many times in an attempt to steal the ship in the hangar, but he could never figure out how to pilot it, Emperor Fel promises to get Adrax off Yinchorr if he will sneak them in, Adrax agrees.

Adrax and Jagged arrive at a hole in the wall that closes off the base and crawl through, they move through the compound undetected by using shipping crates as cover and make their way to the base's main door which has a Royal Trooper guarding it. Adrax uses the force to manipulate the guard into opening the door, Adrax asks the guard if there is anything of interest in the base, in response the guard reveals that there is only a single prisoner, an ex pirate by the name of Moon Vao.

Jagged states that a co-pilot couldn't hurt and Adrax agrees, the two visit Moon Vao which they free after a colorful discussion. A Klaxon alarm sounds off as soon as the cell opens and the band of three make a run for it with Jag firing back at the pursing troops as he and the group flees. The trio soon find the ship right where Tarsus said it would be, they board it and quickly close the boarding ramp. The Twi'lek activates the turret, manually operates it and opens fire at troopers while Fel launches the ship. Jag fires a missile at the closed hangar doors while Adrax uses the force to guide it to the hangar door's weak spot, the door gives birth to a hole and the ship flies through, quickly exiting orbit and entering hyperspace.

Darth Vidious is standing on the bridge of the Antaeus when Commander Fost approaches him and informs him that he ordered Royal Troopers to destroy the only known settlement on Yinchorr in an attempt to kill Fel. Darth Vidious expresses disappointment and states that isn't the way the Protectorate does things, he goes as far as to tell Fost that he doesn't understand his methods or what the Protectorate stands for, he then demotes him by ripping his Commander's patch off his uniform and has his Royal Guard remove Fost from the bridge.

Ben, Han, Leia and Luke are catching up aboard the Millennium Falcon when they receive a transmission from Jagged who states that the Glory was overrun and that Jaina was captured by an individual wielding a lightsaber. Jagged also informs them of Yinchorr and the enemy's presence there. In response Luke messages the Jedi Temple and dispatches Masters Kam and Tionne Solusar along with Master Kyle Katarn and Knight Jaden Korr to investigate Yinchorr.

The Jedi fly in two groups, Jaden and Kyle in the Raven's Claw and Kam and Tionne in two StealthX fighters, both groups are shot down on approach and crash land on Yinchorr. Kam and Tionne crash land close to each other, while Jaden and Kyle miles away. Tionne dies upon impact, Kam senses this, hurriedly exits his downed StealthX and rushes over to his wife's corpse. Due to a fog that was present where the Raven's Claw crashed, the Protectorate wasn't able to pinpoint Jaden and Kyle's position, it was able to locate Kam's crash site however. Royal Troopers surround the crash site, in response Kam ignites his lightsaber which he uses to bat away blaster bolts and to get in close and slash apart scores of Royal Troopers while defending the site that contains his wife's body. He eventually succumbs to blaster fire and falls to the ground, he uses the last of his strength to grab his wife's hand before he dies.

Jaden and Kyle discuss their options and decide to split up, Jaden is to investigate the base that Jagged reported for clues about the enemy and its plans, while Kyle is to go check the downed StealthX's for parts to repair the Raven's Claw. Jaden infiltrates the base and makes his way to the communication room without issue, when he arrives he listens in on an ongoing conversation between Fost and a Royal Trooper, with Fost participating via Hologram. Fost quickly spots Jaden and orders the Royal Trooper to kill him, Jaden uses the Force to hurl the Royal Trooper into the wall which knocks him out, Fost then proceeds to apologize to Jaden for trying to have him killed and reveals that he wishes to speak with him. Fost starts out the conversation by asking for amnesty within the Alliance in exchange for information, Jaden gives his word, which prompts Fost to respond by telling Jaden that Coruscant is about to be visited by two Death Stars and that the Protectorate command ship which holds him, Jaina, and Vidious will be present. Jaden asks when the two Death Stars will arrive, but the transmission ends.

The Force guides Jaden to a reactor room, Jaden uses the Force to shoot lightning at the reactor which causes it to overload and begin a meltdown process. Jaden sprints as fast as he can and he manages to make it outside of the base, but is thrown by the explosion. Kyle finishes the repairs on the Raven's Claw as Jaden limps back to him, Jaden tells Kyle what he found and the two leave the planet. Once in space Kyle contacts Luke at the Jedi Temple and informs him of what he learned, Luke looks out the window towards the empty Coruscant sky while talking to Kyle, suddenly two Planet Annihilators appear, making the sky not so empty.

The Alliance Navy and Imperial Navy mobilize and gather around the Planet Annihilators, while engaging the Protectorate Navy. The Millennium Falcon heads for the Annihilator that is modeled after the Death Star II, while Adrax Tarsus, Jagged Fel, and Moon Vao cover its approach in the stolen Protectorate starship prototype, suddenly the Raven's Claw comes in out of hyperspace and heads for the Annihilator modeled after the Death Star I, both ships receive back up from the Alliance and Imperial Navy.

An emergency assembly is held by Alliance and Imperial officials on Coruscant in response to the two planet destroying space stations that have appeared above, Darth Vidious walks in flanked by Royal Guards and delivers a speech denouncing the Galactic Alliance and the Skywalker Family blaming both parties for all the different wars that had erupted in the last forty plus years, during the speech he reveals that the space stations were unarmed and he had them appear above Coruscant to prove that the Alliance was unable to protect its capital and is thus unfit to be in charge of holding the galaxy together. The two "Planet Annihilators" are destroyed during his speech and Leia steps forward and interrupts, the two have a formal debate, eventually the debate ends and Vidious leaves with his Royal Guard.

Ben and Luke Skywalker along with R2-D2, lie in wait aboard the Jade Shadow above Coruscant, Leia informs them through the Force that Vidious is aboard a Lambda-class shuttle, finally the moment comes when they see Darth Vidious's shuttle. They shadow it to the Antaeus which is invisible due to a cloaking device, when the shuttle arrives the Antaeus briefly turns off its cloaking device so that it can board, the Jade Shadow lands beside it with its own cloaking device activated, Ben and Luke watch as Vidious and his Royal Guard leave the shuttle.

The two reach out with the Force and sense that Jaina is present on the Antaeus, however Vidious is able to sense that both Skywalkers are present as well and has Jaina moved to the bridge of the Antaeus. Luke orders R2-D2 to take off with the Jade Shadow and stand-by, while Ben and he exit and head toward the bridge of the Antaeus. Father and son make their way to the bridge and pass by many Royal Troopers without incident as Vidious had ordered the Royal Troopers to allow the Skywalkers to pass.

Darth Vidious greets the two Skywalkers when they arrive on the bridge, he explains that his goal is to destroy the Alliance and everyone with Skywalker blood because he has come to the conclusion that as long as both exist so will war, he then moves from his spot revealing Jaina with her hands bound together. Luke argues with the Dark Lord as Jaina uses the Force to pull one of Vidious's lightsabers from his belt and hurl it at him when he has his back turned. Vidious had foresaw this turn of events and he responds by back-flipping over the lightsaber and grabbing it by the hilt while he is moving above it, he lands behind Jaina and immediately stabs her through the back with the lightsaber.

An enraged Ben and a saddened Luke Skywalker engage Darth Vidious in a lightsaber duel. Luke manages to hold his own for a while, but it begins to become obvious to both Ben and Vidious that Luke's degenerating body is beginning to give way.The duel drags on until Ben and Vidious sense that Luke's heartbeat is slowing down and getting ready to stop. Luke raises his lightsaber in the exact same manner that Ben Kenobi had on the Death Star fifty years ago. Darth Vidious pushes Ben away with a powerful blast of Force Energy and swings both of his lightsabers at Luke, but they only make contact with Luke's robes because his body disappeared. A powerful explosion of energy materializes from where Luke was standing blowing Darth Vidious into the air and shredding apart his armor.

Darth Vidious slams into the ground and had just mustered the strength to rise to his knees when Ben lets out a cry and uses the Force to reach Vidious from across the room in a single leap, Ben's lightsaber strikes at Vidious as he lands, but Vidious is barely able to block it and push it back before rising to his feet with great difficulty. Luke warns Ben that he is on the brink of giving in to the dark side and that anger can cause sloppiness which can lead to a mistake that will cost him his life. He assures Ben that there will be another time and that he should leave while he still walks the path of the light side.

Ben pulls his father's lightsaber to him with the Force as he runs off of the bridge and towards the exit, he comes across a room and feels compelled to go inside. Once the door opens, he spots the ship's cloaking device, realizing what it is, he drives his lightsaber straight into it and continues to the hangar. R2-D2 lands the Jade Shadow in the hangar just as Ben arrives, Ben proceeds to board it and they take off. Ben sends a holo transmission to Jagged Fel, who had just arrived on the Glory, informing him about the recent turn of events. Jagged Fel orders the Empire to "destroy every last particle" of the Antaeus, both Alliance and Imperial Forces open fire on the now visible ship, but are only able to damage the communication's array among other non vital components before it manages to flee into hyperspace.

A Protectorate technician is working on repairing a busted monitor on the bridge of the Antaeus when Fost (now a sergeant due to his demotion) is escorted by the Royal Guard to a seated Darth Vidious and leave. The technician carries on with his work while listening in on the conversation and discreetly watching through the reflection on the screen, Vidious reveals to Fost that a hidden camera in the communication room had picked up a rather interesting conversation earlier, more specifically the conversation between Fost and Korr. Sergeant Fost begs forgiveness, Vidious responds by telling Fost that he had been badly burned and mutilated during his duel with the Skywalkers, the technician watches Vidious stand through the reflection of the monitor and is able to see tendrils break through Vidious's helmet, causing the glass plating to shatter. The tendrils enter Fost's nostrils and begins draining Fost's life force causing him to visibly age while he screams and shakes his head.

The novel ends with Kyle Katarn being appointed the new Grand Master of the Jedi Order and overseeing the Jedi Order's departure from Coruscant.

Behind the scenes[]

Conceptualization of Episode VII began on December 10th, 2012 as a result of the Write Your Own Episode VII Star Wars Fanon Wiki project. It wasn't until May 2013 that pen was put to the paper and the writing process had begun, the author decided to publish a plot summary of what was already completed for the purpose of gathering feedback so that he would able to fix things accordingly before pushing out a final version. On August 1st, 2013 writing of the final script began. The author prepared by listening to the audiobooks of the novels; Star Wars: Darth Plagueis, Labyrinth of Evil, and Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, all of which were authored by James Luceno

The author is grateful that Star Wars Fanon Wiki Users Brandon Rhea and TK-999 have helped guide the direction of the story and have led to major changes, two examples of this is Darth Vidious was originally going to be Palpatine's secret apprentice who was to challenge either Darth Vader or Luke after the Battle of Endor for mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith and another thing that changed was Jagged Fel was to crash land on Tatooine but it was decided that Tatooine was too bland and had been done to death thus the setting changed to Yinchorr.
