Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is the third chapter of the Star Wars film saga and the sixth film released into theaters, opening in 2005. It is preceded chronologically by Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and followed by Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The film was written and directed by George Lucas, and it marks the final time that Lucas wrote and directed a Star Wars film; Lucas is said to not be writing or directing the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII or any other future films.
The film centers around the fall of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to the dark side of the Force and his ascension as Darth Vader, a Dark Lord of the Sith. In the backdrop are the end of the Clone Wars, the fall of the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order, and the rise of the Galactic Empire. The film ends with the birth of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo, the twin children of Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala, setting up the events of the original Star Wars trilogy.
The film was released in 2005 and has gone on to be released in DVD and Blu Ray multiple times throughout the 2000s and 2010s. It was scheduled for another theatical re-release in 2013, this time in 3D, but the release was canceled by The Walt Disney Company after its acquisition of Lucasfilm Ltd.
