Plot Summary

The Search

Two years after the fight with the Lost Tribe of Sith, Jedi Master Ken Elegin receives a vision from an unknown source, and discovers that a monstrous creature mired in dark side energies will envelop the Galaxy and kill all sentient life. Recently the Jedi have foreseen their destruction, but their search into Sith-affiliated worlds has come up with no evidence of any threat existing and the search was called off. After being shown the planet Lehon and being told to head there, Ken is accosted by Jedi Master Kyle Katarn, who has become wary of Ken due to his frequent absences from the Jedi Order to find his place in the Galaxy. As the two debate their differences, they find that a recent mission to find a missing Jedi named Sothais Saar has discovered that he is no more, murdered by his contacts inside of Hutt Space, where he had attempted to get the Hutts to abolish slavery. Learning this, Kyle reveals to Ken that his former apprentice, Rosh Penin was killed on Dromund Kaas during the search for information on the hidden threat, and that he wanted to go there himself, but was forced to stay on Coruscant by his fellow Council members, who feared losing yet another Jedi Master as they had in years past. Ken, now with Kyle's approval, leaves, knowing that on Lehon he will find Tash and Zak Arranda.

In Froz space, pilot and bounty hunter Malinza Thanas and her co-pilot Zomil wait for two Jedi Knights to transfer the recently recaptured pirate Three-Eye, who escaped from Galactic Alliance custody and began experimentation on animals from an old work site of hers. When Shul Vaal and Tiu Zax arrive with Galactic Alliance soldiers to pick up the prisoner, they find that they have been double-crossed, and that Three-Eye allied with the Thalassian slavers and Cavrilhu Pirates, who extract her from the Jedi, and also take Shul as a captive, leaving an unconscious Tiu with an angered Malinza, who swears to get Shul back alive.

On Zonama Sekot, Danni Quee and Kunra encounter the living consciousness of the planet, and are told to leave for Lehon, where they will assist an unknown figure in his quest to save the Galaxy. Recently married, the two take a modified coralskipper to get away from their hidden part of the Unknown Regions and make their way to Lehon.

As his fellow slaves depart for their service, Garindan, once famed Kubaz information broker, dwells on his past, knowing that he has been marked as cursed by his people for giving information to the Empire that could have killed Luke Skywalker on Tatooine before he had a chance to destroy the Death Star. Despite his setbacks, he managed to gain access to a privileged life, but the Hutts placed a bounty on his head that was eventually collected by Boba Fett, and then he was sentenced to live the remainder of his life on Ylesia, where he would have been indoctrinated into the recently resurrected cult on the planet, if not for a bribe he made that allowed him to secure access to an enzyme that broke off the Exultation of the t'landa Til. This leaves him one of the few slaves on Ylesia able to keep his own mind and not be broken by his overseers, causing another slave to notice him. The slave, a Makurth named Maber Yeff, tells Garindan that he is planning a slave revolt to make up for his past as a member of the Peace Brigade, and that he wants Garindan's help, which Garindan offers when he realizes that he has nothing to live for anymore.

Tash and Zak Arranda investigate the ruins of the Temple of the Ancients on Lehon, in an attempt to disprove wild theories that the Star Forge could return to menace the Galaxy. As they work, they find themselves under attack by a group of Mandalorians who are bent on killing them. Before the battle can truly start, however, Ken arrives in his StealthX and forces the Mandalorians to flee without killing any of them. The Mandalorians return to their camp to talk to their leader, Ram Zerimar—who has been told by an individual known as Durrei that the Arrandas were secretly supplying the Empire with baradium weapons—vows to kill the Jedi himself, as he thinks that he will be doing the Galaxy a favor.

Meanwhile, on Coruscant, Raynar Thul, recently offered more freedoms following his recovery from being among the Killiks, finds himself being contacted by the same being that talked with Ken. Finding that he has been holding himself back, Raynar leaves the Temple by hiding himself in the Force, and leaves for the Hapes Cluster, where he was directed by the mysterious being. After the Jedi discover his departure, Kyle Katarn sends Barabel Jedi Knight Dordi after him, as none of them know his reasons for leaving so suddenly.

Waking up in a strange cell where a group of viewspiders are watching him, Shul Vaal finds that he has been bounds and that his lekku are attached to shock-filament, causing him immense pain. Right before, he is contacted by a being that claims to be working in his best interests, but that it is up to Shul to decide whether or not to trust his words. Shul also finds a group of ysalamiri with him in his cell that are semi-halting his ability to use the Force. When his cell opens, Shul meets Gumbrak Hoxz, who is allied with Palazidar and claims to want to kill all who wield the Force, even though he has its power as well. Palazidar drugs Shul and vows to take him to Ylesia, but stops on Pzob before in order to set off another part of a much larger plan few are aware of.

On Lehon, Ken, Tash, and Zak discuss Ken's vision, while Zak views it with skepticism. Reminding the others that they are still being hunted down by Mandalorians, Zak goes to Ken's StealthX to make sure it can defend them when the Mandalorians attack them. Ram watches Zak work and feels an outside presence guide his hands to kill Zak by first placing him within the confines provided by an adhesive grenade and then a thermal detonator. Shocked at what he has done, Ram tries to fight off the presence, but finds his fellow Mandalorians with him, telling him that he sent a distress call to them and that they will treat his wounds after they kill the Jedi. Knowing he does not have any wounds, Ram attempts to dissuade them from attacking, but he is prevented from doing so by the same force, which he finds is a mysterious figure that manages to make Ram fall into a dizzy spell and from there to unconsciousness.

Tash reacts terribly to Zak's death and starts delving into dark side abilities to kill the Mandalorians attacking them. Ken manages to calm her down momentarily and fights off the Mandalorians with her, and wonders if they were sent by someone who knows of his vision and does not wish for them to succeed. Using Tash as bait, Ken creates a Force whirlwind and ensnares the Mandalorian without the weapons they held moments before. Questioning them, Ken finds that they will not reveal their backer, and that they have plenty of weapons hidden inside parts of their armor, and almost dies, but the coralskipper piloted by Kunra arrives and kills the Mandalorians, saving both Ken and Tash. Ken is contacted by Danni and told that they are there to help them out. Ken tries to tell Tash the good news, but finds her carrying the desecrated remains of her brother, wailing her grief throughout the Force, as Ken swears to himself that he will never let anyone around him die if he can help it.

Watching from afar, Ylairo Iteu is contacted by his Master, who asks for a report on the mission. Ylairo tells him that he was able to arrange for Zak's death, but that the arrival of the coralskipper prevented him from killing anyone else and he requests to be sent elsewhere. Agreeing to his request, Ylairo's Master tells him to leave, and Ylairo does, heading to Zaddja for then, but knows he won't end up there, as his Master will tell him to go elsewhere soon.

Thanks to intelligence gathered by the Ryn Network, Malinza and Zomil managed to capture a ship piloted by a member of Three-Eye's organization and gain codes to enter her base on Iridium. Tiu receives a vision and is told to save the Galaxy with the friends she will find on the way to her destiny. Waking up, she goes with Malinza and Zomil to Iridium after Malinza alerts Galactic Alliance forces to Three-Eye's base, but, due to recent events, has to lie about rogue Jedi being there to get them to come.

On Iridium, they encounter Three-Eye's second-in-command Sawthane, who leads them to Three-Eye, and encounter her special bodyguards, including a YVH droid, B1 droids, two Anzati, and several Talz. Barely fighting them off, they reach an impasse, but they receive a message from Galactic Alliance forces, who rout Three-Eye's fleet. Cornered, Three-Eye tries to have her pirates fight to the last being, but she's shot by Sawthane, who says that while he likes being a rogue, he does not wish to die to maintain that life and prefers prison. Tiu and Malinza interrogate Sawthane on Shul's whereabouts and discover that he has been taken to Pzob, rendering the majority of their mission there futile.

Meditating in his chambers on the forgotten fortress world of O'reen, Durrei experiences visions brought on by the Kashi Mer talisman that show him his enemies and what they will do in the future. Contacting Vul Isen, Durrei finds out that Vul is close to procuring a man that could help them find what they have been looking for in the Hapes Cluster. Next, Durrei tells Ylairo, his apprentice, to go to Pzob and kill all that would oppose them, as he leaves O'reen behind, while giving its secrets to the Vagaari Empire, in order to make sure that no one can reveal who he is to any potential questioners.

Ken, Tash, Kunra, and Danni hold a funeral for Zak, as Ken offers a short eulogy for his friend, but after they cremate the body, Tash leaves them for the Shroud in order to have some privacy. When she leaves, the others debate what they should be doing, and all agree to leave for Pzob in order to figure out what to do next, and they take the Shroud with them, while Ken tries to figure out a way to talk with Tash.

The Gathering

Raynar Thul enters Hapes in a ship acquired from family friend Meego, and begins his search for Queen Mother Tenel Ka Djo. In the same place where he landed, Raynar encounters two mysterious women who attack him, forcing him to defend himself. During the battle, he saves one of them from being electrocuted, and the attack is called off by Tenel Ka, who had used it as a means to discover if Raynar intended her any harm. Deciding that he is in the right mind, she listens to his reasons for leaving and reveals her bodyguards as Shada D'ukal and Kirana Ti, while taking Raynar under her protection, vowing to make sure that Dordi joins up with him.

On Gallinore, Vul Isen enters a prison facility and kills a guard the impedes his progress. Using the database in the prison, Vul finds his quarry and rescues Sinsor Khal from his jail cell. Discovering that Vul is working for Durrei and wants information that Sinsor has of Millinar, Sinsor agrees to work for them in exchange for his freedom, while Vul leaves an alchemically changed chrysalis beast of a shyrack behind to kill the remaining guards.

Having received instruction from Tenel Ka in an encoded message, Dordi lands on Stalsinek IV and awaits her arrival. There she meets with Tenel Ka and Raynar, finding that they are supposed to go to Ylesia, as Raynar had received another vision that told him to go there. Begrudgingly giving up the hunt, Dordi leaves with Raynar, as Tenel Ka warns them of Sinsor Khal's escape, which she believes is connected to whatever they are fighting against.

On Ylesia, Garindan and Maber argue over what they should do in order to find the beings that Maber had sent into slavery there during the Yuuzhan Vong War. However, they cannot reach an agreement yet and are forced to end their conversation early, as they need to catch up on sleep. Meanwhile, on Nar Hekka, Palazidar refuels his personal ship and gathers some minor personal belongings, and then leaves to take Shul to Ylesia.

The next day, Maber reveals the identities of the beings that he was forced to sell out during his time in the Peace Brigade, and Garindan, upon hearing the names of their species, figures out that he can find them easily. While working in the spice fields, they discover that Shul has been sent to their part of the planet, where they help him out and discover his identity. Deciding to work together, they agree to find a way to save the people Maber sent to Ylesia, regain Garindan's honor, and get Shul back home safely.

In space around Pzob, the Hindsight lands, leaving Malinza, Zomil, and Tiu to track down Shul, who Tiu senses has at least been on the planet. Their search is time consuming, however, and Malinza splits up from the group to talk with residents of the local cantina, finding that Gumbrak Hoxz is responsible for the loss of Shul, and that he is nearby.

On Quiberon V, Gumbrak watches from the skyhook he created years ago and ponders about his role in future events. In his musings, he is contacted by Durrei, who tells him that the beings that he had warned Gumbrak of are now on Pzob and that they must be stopped or Gumbrak could be killed. Knowing that Durrei is trustworthy due to past events, Gumbrak agrees to go back to Pzob, even though he already has plans in place to capture his foes, and he despises dealing with Force-sensitives, as he barely survived the Purge himself, now viewing the Force as an aberration of life.

Malinza contacts Zomil, and discovers through a code that they made up that he has been captured by Gumbrak's forces with Tiu and that he can't escape easily, forcing her to try to think up a new plan to save her allies. Zomil, meanwhile, tries to barter for Tiu's freedom, but is rebuked by Gumbrak, who has used ysalamir to prevent Tiu from escaping from them. Gumbrak reveals that he knows that Zomil caused the deaths of two of his former bosses indirectly, and that he was once a feared part of the Reuss VIII dueling rings, which he will put to the test by making Zomil fight Tiu to the death.

In orbit around Rishal in order to let Kunra's coralskipper to gain the raw materials it needs in order to survive, Ken receives another vision from his mysterious benefactor, discovering that he is a member of the Duinuogwuin race and that he must save the Duinuogwuin's child who will be used by the same people working against them to create the end of the Galaxy that Ken saw in his dream. Waking up to find that the ship has entered hyperspace during his meditation, Ken discovers Tash knocking on his door, and he lets her in, where she tells him that she has thought on her actions and wants to ask him for his forgiveness for the way she acted. Ken offers it, and the two share an embrace, just as the ship comes under attack from a Mandalorian vessel on Varristad. Fighting off the vessel with a Force meld and Kunra's piloting skills, they trap the vessel in a tractor beam, and interrogate the Mandalorian, Ram, who says he will get revenge on the ones who killed his comrades, hinting that he suspects that they were not responsible for engineering the attack, as Ken decides to return on their trip back to Pzob.

On Pzob, Malinza researches Gumbrak's defenses, discovering that Zomil and Tiu are going to be forced to fight each other in a duel, while she attracts the attention of Gumbrak's slicer Baylan, who discovered someone sneaking around in Gumbrak's mainframes through her own slicing, but does not find out her identity. Malinza sets out the next day to save her friends, but she is stopped by Ken, who reveals that he is there based on a vision with his allies and that he was instructed to help her based off of a vision he had when they arrived on Pzob. As they talk, Ken, Tash, and Danni discover that someone is watching them, so Ken directs Danni and Kunra to go with Malinza to find Tiu and Zomil, while Tash and he hold off their pursuer. As the other group leaves, Ken and Tash confront a Zabrak Force-sensitive who reveals himself as Ylairo and they engage in battle.

Zomil has a dream of his past experiences on Reuss VIII, and comes to regret everything he did, as he indirectly caused the deaths of his former bosses due to him having contacted a Tolanese bounty hunter that had once owned his bosses and wanted revenge. Waking up, Zomil is taken away from his cell to be placed in the Pzob Forest Battle Yard with Tiu, as Gumbrak forces them to fight by placing choke-collars on them, and he tells them that the only way for one of them to escape is for one of them to due by the other's hands.

Meanwhile, Malinza, Kunra, and Danni confront the guards in front of the Battle Yard, barely getting rid of the problems that Baylan has left behind for them, as he figured out who Malinza was and decided to halt her attempt to save her friends. Making their way to Gumbrak's observation post, they tell Gumbrak to cease the duel after Malinza stuns Baylan, but he reveals that he has the system rigged to make the collars kill Tiu and Zomil if he is killed. Knowing that there is nothing that they can do for now, Malinza, Kunra, and Danni are forced to watch Zomil and Tiu fight to the death.

Tash and Ken continue their fight against Ylairo, who tells them that he was once a member of the Emperor's Hand. When several civilians get killed in the crossfire, Ken gets Tash to go with him back to the docking bay that contains the Shroud in order to prevent any more passersby from being slaughtered. In the docking bay, Tash gets placed in a state of stasis by Ylairo and is almost killed, but Ken uses the distraction to stab Ylairo in the side, but doesn't kill him. When he places his attention back on Tash, Ken is surprised by Ram Zerimar, who escaped confinement from the ship and takes Ylairo away from them due to Ken and Tash being too injured to follow. Agreeing to go over to where Malinza and the others are and heal themselves on the way, Ken and Tash head to the Battle Yard, ready to do whatever they can to save their allies.

En route to Ylesia, Raynar and Dordi find themselves in trouble when mynocks somehow find their way into the ship, despite its helium-rich environment, and cause the hyperdrive to malfunction. Acting irrationally, Dordi slices up the hyperdrive to kill the mynocks, causing the ship to enter hyperspace, despite it being impossible to do so. Barely making it to the Sepan system, Raynar and Dordi argue about what happened, and get assistance from the natives to head over to Wann Tsir, where they get a new hyperdrive.

Still angry at Dordi, Raynar goes to his quarters while a mechanic affixes the hyperdrive to the ship. Attempting to contact his mysterious benefactor, Raynar does, but his vision is suddenly changed by Durrei, who asks Raynar to join him in his quest to change the Galaxy so that no one will ever go through the hardships that they went through in life. Behind the scenes

If the Star Wars Expanded Universe were a woman, I'd marry her.
—NKSCF during a private chat with a FanFiction.net reviewer on his usage of obscure materials for his stories

Star Wars: The Chosen is NKSCF's attempt to branch off from his earlier works, which were considered on this site to rely too much on Mary Sue-ish qualities that detracted from otherwise great ideas. In order to distance himself from these works, NKSCF came up with an idea to find a canon Sue and work it so that he or she had flaws and could be respected. During a visit to TVTropes, NKSCF found out that many fans considered Ken from the Jedi Prince series to be such a Sue. From there he came up with a way to incorporate Ken into a story that he was already planning that dealt with obscure or rarely used characters from canon to give them a chance to be in the spotlight. This was sparked by a visit to Wookieepedia, where NKSCF read about the Jedi healer Shul Vaal. Knowing that he was unlikely to be used too much in the future, NKSCF made Shul the first character for his fan-fic, and then built the story around Shul and Ken, filling other characters in to make the story more stable.

On the subject of using too many species and planets within his work and going "overboard" with the concept, NKSCF noted that he was doing this intentionally, as he felt that not many writers respected the fact that there were countless species that were underused in canon, and needed to be used to remind readers that they were still there. Other users through private e-mails praised him for this idea, but also cautioned its overuse, preferring for him to focus more on the plot, rather than using as many species and planets as possible for what they called "author appeal," a trope that NKSCF admits freely.
