Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Fall of the Empire is an interquel taking place twenty-two years after the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and nearly three centuries before Star Wars: The Old Republic. In concept, Fall of the Empire is similar and parallels to Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.
Outline[]
Twenty-two years after the conclusion of The Sith Lords, a Sith Empire led by a mysterious Emperor is on the verge of permanent destruction. The player would play as a reincarnated Sith Lord and must find a way to restore order.
The story begins on Kalakar Six, then moves to Dromund Kaas, then to the next four worlds in any order to locate Sith holocrons:
- Athsis
- Begeren
- Khar Delba
- Korriban
Finally, the player must fight in a conflict between the tomb raiders and a Sith cult on Khar Shian. Afterward, the player's companions must return to Dromund Kaas to fight in a major battle while the player character goes alone on Nathema to confront Darth Exitium. There are three different endings depending on the character's alignment: light, neutral, or dark.
Gameplay[]
Fall of the Empire uses a modified version of the Lycium Engine, which was previously used in Bioware's Dragon Age 2. The modified version attempts to replicate the style and asethics of the Knights of the Old Republic video games. A new addition to the engine is the inclusion of 4-player mutiplayer through Xbox Live or internet connection.
The gameplay for Fall of the Empire is in the same as in the first two Knights of the Old Republic video games, but with added features such as new Force Powers, Feats, expanded character creation, three companions in a party, fast travel to different points on the level map, and a story path for neutral characters. New features, such as New Game+, allows everything from a previous playthrough to come into the next. A special Nightmare difficulty setting to make the combat even harder and an Infinities Mode that pokes fun of Star Wars lore.
A couple of gameplay elements from The Sith Lords has returned, but implemented differently. One is the Influence system. Here, high influence grants more bonuses to combat as well as getting to know them better while low influence causes most of them to betray the player. The second changed system are the prestige classes, this time there are two prestige classes to choose from depending on the player's base class. Below is a list for all six.
- Sith Warrior = Sith Juggernaut/Sith Marauder
- Sith Agent = Sith Operative/Sith Assassin
- Sith Inquisitor = Sith Sorcerer/Sith Alchemist
The PC version includes a zoom in and out camera that shows the game in an isometric view and a developer's console.

Outbreak at Kalakar Six[]
Twenty years after the end of the Jedi Purge, civil war has broken out within the Empire. Shortly after turning nineteen, the Dark Hero, along with his master Scarlet, was appointed to manage a research facility on Kalakar Six. Sometime after their arrival, a couple of spies from the Rogue Sith sabotaged the defenses around the facility and the nearby guard ship. By the time the skirmish was over, only the Dark Hero, Scarlet, 1V-R8, and X1-Z6 remained.
The Sith back on Dromund Kaas, however, did pick up a distress message from Kalakar, and a small team was sent to investigate the disturbance. Shortly later, however, the Rogue Sith also picked up on it and was heading there as well.
While Byron was exploring the guard ship, the Dark Hero awoke from his sleep and made his way throughout the facility to find Scarlet. Byron eventually arrived at the facility and discovered X1-Z6, and the two went onward together. During the same time, the Dark Hero founded Scarlet, and the Rogue Sith have also arrived.
It wasn't long until the Sith encountered the Rogue's and as soon as they did, an intense fight began. After narrowly escaping Darth Namla, the Dark Hero and Scarlet ran into 1V-R6. As soon as everyone got together at the Night Vulture (which is a redesigned version of the Ebon Hawk), the Rogue's detonated planted explosives, destroying the entire facility.
Above orbit, the Night Vulture had to either destroy the freighters or sneak past them. Either way, the Night Vulture was able to escape and entered hyperspace back towards Dromund Kaas. Meanwhile, Naiko and Darth Namla inform Darth Exitium of their escape.
Dromund Kaas crisis[]
Upon arriving back at Kaas City, the Dark Hero and Scarlet go to inform the Dark Council members about the events of Kalakar Six, while Byron does the same with the Imperial Intelligence. While exploring the city, the Dark Hero and his companions witnessed first-hand of the continuing civil unrest transpiring in the city. The next day, Scarlet took the Dark Hero to the Sith academy to continue his training, and afterward, the two received a message from the Dark Council. The council members, on behave of the Emperor, had requested the Dark Hero to investigate the Dark Temple, to locate a specific Sith holocron.
The Dark Hero and companions took a shuttle to the temple site and were greeted by a small outpost who prepared them before they entered. Inside the temple are the remains of men who have been driving mad by the overwhelming powers of the dark side. The Dark Hero eventually had to continue on alone but located the holocron he was sent to find. The artifact then created a force phantom of an unknown man, who subconsciously seems familiar to the Dark Hero.
After dealing with the apparition, the Dark Hero returned to the council to inform them of his success. Afterward, the Emperor had requested to see him. Upon visiting the Emperor, he sends the Dark Hero on a journey to locate four other similar holocrons. At this moment, the Dark Hero is giving a vision of where the other four are located.
Following the meeting, the Dark Hero returned to the Night Vulture and finds that Darth Thais and his two slaves: Sara and Thomas, are joining him for the mission.
Athsis[]
With Athsis being the capital world of the Rogue Sith, Byron lands the Night Vulture in the outskirts of Athsis city to avoid detection. While traveling through the city, the Dark Hero and his companions learn of the civil conflict happening between the forces loyal to Darth Namla and Naiko, and another powerful Sith Lord named Vodal Kressh.
After making it past the city, the Dark Hero meets Vodal and must either choose to join him or fight against him. However, even if the Hero chooses to join him, Vodal eventually turns his back on the Hero, and his forces must be fought anyway. In the end, Vodal and his forces are no match for the Hero and his companions and many of them are killed, while the remaining ones, escape. It is possible for Vodal himself to escape if the Hero chooses to join him. But no matter the outcome, Darth Namla arrives and slaughters almost all remaining forces, including Vodal if he is still alive.
With Vodal and his forces broken apart, the Dark Hero makes his way to a nearby Sith temple to locate the next Sith holocron. After dealing with it, Darth Namla and her troops enter the temple and capture the Hero and his companions. As the Hero and the others are being transported to the Depressior, the remaining crew must fight off against invading Rogue Sith, who have located their landing location. After the Vulture is secure, Byron takes the ship off the ground and heads towards the Depressor, knowing the Hero has been captured.
Onboard the Depressor, the Dark Hero confronts Darth Exitium via hologram. However, the encounter is brief and the Hero is taken to an isolated cell. Around this time, Byron arrives and infiltrates the Depressor; rescuing the Hero and other captured companions. On the way back, the Hero and the others confront Darth Namla and Naiko in a short but intense fight. Eventually, though, reinforcements arrive - forcing the Hero and his companions to make a run for it.
After reaching the Night Vulture, the Hero pilots the gunner while Byron makes way for hyperspace. Fortunately, the Hero is able to keep the freighters off long enough for the ship to enter hyperspace and escape. Meanwhile, Darth Namla and Naiko are upset about their escape and blame each other for failing to capture them. The two drew their weapons at each other and almost begin attacking. However, a force phantom of Darth Exitium arrives and stops the two, and also threatens to kill them both if they do not stop fighting. Darth Namla and Naiko agree to stop, and the two go about their separate ways.
Begeren[]
Begeren is one of the two Sith worlds now ruled under the Jedi. After arriving, the Dark Hero comes across a team of miner diggers, who are creating a path towards a long-forgotten structure build underground. However, the miners who were closer to the structure became infected with the powers of the nearby Sith holocron, turning them mad. As a result, the tunnel was divided into two sections, to prevent the insane miners from attacking the others.
After passing the tunnel, the Dark Hero entered the temple and located the next holocron deep within it. After dealing with it, the Dark Hero escaped and returned to the Night Vulture, to set the course of the next destination.
Khar Delba[]
Khar Delba serves as one of the two locations for a conflict between Tomb raiders and the Cult of Naga Sadow. Here the Dark Hero first witnesses the rivalry between the two factions and must make a choice in order to enter the Sith temple, which holds the holocron he's after.
During the Hero's travels on Khar Delba, he meets a badly ravaged Sith Lord named Darth Xnor, who joins the Dark Hero in his quest should he choose to join with the Cult of Naga Sadow.
After choosing one or neither faction, the Hero entered the temple and dealt with the holocron's Force phantom. Afterward, he went back to his ship to set a course for his next planet. Should Darth Xnor join the Night Vulture crew, his alliance with the Cult of Naga Sadow will prove controversial with the other companions.
Korriban[]
Korriban is the other Sith world that has fallen under Jedi rule. After arriving and entering the Sith academy, the Dark Hero and his companions hear stories about a major civil war that had taken place there over twenty years ago, and how that civil war brought the ultimate end to Revan's Sith Empire. Another document located in the academy's library, details about a corrupted Jedi Master, a war being fought between different factions of the criminal underworld, and a series of unusual deaths in the Kossa Prime sector caused by defunct droids.
Also within the old Sith academy, the Dark Hero locates and frees an assassin droid called HK-47. After freeing the droid from his Republic captors, the Hero and the others made their way to the Valley of the Dark Lords, where they used an air-speeder to enter the Valley of Geolg.
Upon arriving, the Hero made his way to an ancient Sith tomb located at the opposite end of the valley and found the Sith holocron located inside. After the holocron was taken cared of, the Hero returned to the Night Vulture, with HK-47, and the ship took off to its next location.
The siege of Khar Shian[]
With all four worlds explored, the Dark Hero receives a message to arrive at Khar Shian to participate in the final battle between the Tomb raiders and the Cult of Naga Sadow.
Depending on the Dark Hero's actions on Khar Delba, he will either have to fight the Tomb raiders, the Cult of Naga Sadow, or both. Regardless, the Dark Hero needed to end the conflict by orders of the Sith Emperor himself. After a long and fierce battle between the two factions, ultimately, the conflict came to an end with either or neither one winning. If Darth Xnor had not joined the Dark Hero's team of companions earlier, he would had to be fought and killed.
When the battle came to end, the Dark Hero used the mediation chamber inside Naga Sadow's temple to draw upon the knowledge he received from all five of the Sith holocron's to regain his memories from his previous incarnation. A vision of Darth Exitium came to him and informed him of the final step of the journey he needed to take, and where he must go to start it. Afterward, Darth Exitium orders Naiko and Darth Namla to prepare a final attack on Dromund Kaas, and although they are reluctant, they obey his orders. Meanwhile, the Emperor senses a disturbance in the Force and orders his men to prepare for a coming attack.
Back on the Night Vulture, the Dark Hero receives a message from Lord Scourge that he and all of his companions must return to Dromund Kaas to prepare for a direct assault by the Rogue Sith and also says that if there were any loose ends that needed tying up, now would be his last chance.
If Darth Xnor is with the Dark Hero, Xnor now seeks to have a private conversation with him. During the talk, Xnor requests the Dark Hero to kill him. At this point, the Dark Hero now had to choose to grant Xnor a mercy killing or let him continue living as a servant for the Empire.
When the Dark Hero was done with all loose ends, he made the course back to Dromund Kaas to begin the civil war's final battle.
On the Night Vulture, HK finds a hologram recording of T3 and interrogates Byron on Revan's last possible location. With Byron's information, HK gathers a lead to the Imperial Citadel's Prison.
The second battle of Dromund Kaas and finale[]
When the Dark Hero returned, he made one last speech to his companions shortly before taking off to his final destination alone. Afterward, he and Scarlet have a private conversation about how proud she is of him, and how much of a powerful Sith Lord he had become. Afterward, Scarlet leaves and the Dark Hero takes off to his final destination: Nathema.
Scarlet, Byron, and all the other companions—with the exception of HK-47—get together with Scourge to form a battle plan. After the plan was finalized, the Rogue Sith arrived from hyperspace and the final battle began.
As the battle went on, HK-47 broke into the Imperial Citadel's Prison section to search for Revan. Ultimately, HK ends up finding the Force ghost of the Jedi Exile instead.
Meanwhile, Byron infiltrates the Depressor with a small strike team and together they fight their way through the ship's miniature city - heading towards the bridge. There Byron kills General Naiko on the bridge. With Naiko's death, Byron now assumes captainship of the Depressor.
Back in Kaas City, Scarlet and the other companions fight their way through the battle-torn streets, culminating in a fierce lightsaber duel with Darth Namla in the Dark Council's chamber. In the end, Scarlet kills Darth Namla; finally bringing victory to the "True Sith" and ending the Great Sith Civil War.
Meanwhile, on the ghost world of Nathema, the Dark Hero confronts his brother, Darth Exitium, on the ancient Sith palace's balcony. In this final confrontation, the Dark Hero uncovers the truth about the Sith Emperor and their Force bond. After defeating Darth Exitium for good, the Dark Hero decides not to return to Dromund Kaas, now knowing of the Emperor's true intentions. Heading into self-exile, the Dark Hero begins a secret plot to find a way to kill the Emperor before he can bring an end to the galaxy. To begin this plot, the Dark Hero severs himself from the Force; disrupting the Force bond with the Emperor. Sometime later, the Dark Hero's companions—believing their comrade to be dead—gather together in a memorial.

Expansions[]
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Fall of the Empire - The Lost Knights: taking place nine months after where the base game left off, the Dark Hero is now out of the Empire and traveling alone throughout the galaxy in the Night Vulture. The reasons for the Dark Hero's exile will vary, depending on the three endings from the base game. Also, the Dark Hero no longer has any connection to the Force--after cutting it off to disrupt a Force bond with the Emperor. This expansion is based off the original canceled Knights of the Old Republic III and includes all known content from that project, such as the character Naresha and the worlds: Mandalore, Taloraan, and Dashaad. This expansion also marks the return of Canderous Ordo, now an aging Mandalorian seeking to find a worthy successor to lead his people. Many characters from the first two Knights of the Old Republic video games also appear in various cameos throughout. In this adventure, the Dark Hero--with the aid of an all-new companion party--goes on a quest to stop a group of fallen Dark Jedi from destroying the Order. Other themes explored in this expansion include homesickness and nostalgia.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Fall of the Empire - Shadows of Crime: set three months after The Lost Knights, the Dark Hero becomes a part of a dangerous conspiracy between the various factions of the criminal underworld such as the Exchange, the Hutt Cartel, and Czerka Arms. This expansion includes the location of Nal Hutta, the Coruscant Underworld, and the return of Nar Shaddaa. The events of what happened to the remaining Tomb raiders after Savik's death from the base game are also revealed.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Fall of the Empire - Fallen Heros: the Dark Hero comes across an army of HK-51 droids who are being haunted down by a corrupting Republic. The Republic is trying to search and destroy all of them, but their main target and focus is HK-47, who is still on the search for his master Revan. The Dark Hero must now choose which faction he will join sides with. The Republic, which has fallen into corruption, the HK Units, or simply crush anything that gets in the way. Locations revisited in this story include the ruins of Taris and the HK-Factory on Telos IV.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Fall of the Empire - Returning Home: Returning Home is the final expansion for Fall of the Empire and tells the story of the Dark Hero's final moment's in his second life and sets up the events for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The Dark Hero finally comes up with a plan to stop the Emperor. However, it would be long and complicated. During the story, the Dark Hero locates the Mask of Revan and confronts the Emperor in one last stand. The Dark Hero has a sentimental farewell to all who traveled with him and leaves to meet his final fate.
Behind The Scenes[]
The Infinities mode is named after the comic book series of the same name.
Sequel[]
The game is followed by a spiritual successor, a MMORPG called Star Wars: The Old Republic II: The Region Empires.
