Staff sergeant was a non-commissioned officer rank within many military forces across the galaxy, including the Republic Army, Republic Marines, Grand Army of the Republic, and the Imperial Army. The second grade of sergeant, it was the third rank within the overall hierarchy of NCOs that used this system, and was subordinate to Sergeant First Class within the Galactic Republic's Army and Gunnery Sergeant within the Marine Corps.
Persons serving as staff sergeants were typically employed as squad leaders in battle, commanding units of ten to twelve soldiers often split into three or four fire teams depending on service branch. Staff sergeants could also serve as company-level specialists, junior drill instructors, clerks, aides, or supervisors of a garrison unit's civilian support staff.
