Snoke was the mysterious humanoid alien who ruled the First Order as Supreme Leader during the New Republic Era. Possibly unaware of his origins, Snoke was artificial genetic construct, created on the planet Exegol by the resurrected Dark Lord of the Sith and Galactic Emperor Darth Sidious with the help of his loyal Sith Eternal. he was designed to be Sidious's proxy in power, and while he possessed free will and was capable of independent thought, he was still, without his knowledge, influenced by his creator. He was eventually given the additional purpose of grooming and molding Ben Solo into master of attack and cunning; a worthy heir, tested if he had the capacity of inheriting the Sith legacy, and this allowed his unseen master to sidestep training the Skywalker heir himself as a dark apprentice and turning the risk to his safety that would have been imposed to another.

  +
  +
Snoke eventually gained control of the First Order, a hermit state in the Unknown Regions formed from a remnant of the Galactic Empire. Despite holding absolute power as Supreme Leader, Snoke allowed General Armitage Hux to lead the First Order military in his name, preferring to concentrate on spiritual matters of the Force. With the turning of Padawan Ben Solo—grandson of the Chosen One Anakin Skywalker—to the dark side, Snoke gained the heir to the powerful Skywalker bloodline as his student. Solo adopted the persona of Kylo Ren after renouncing the Jedi Order.

During the last days of the Cold War, Snoke directed his apprentice to hunt and destroy Luke Skywalker, Ren's uncle and former Jedi Master, determined to complete the Great Jedi Purge with Skywalker's death as the last Jedi. Additionally, Snoke authorized a preemptive strike with Starkiller Base against the New Republic that resulted in the destruction of the Galactic Senate and the outbreak of the First Order/Resistance War in 34 ABY. {{Quote|As part of their genetic experiments, my followers had attempted to create another being that came to be known as Snoke. Snoke was an artificial genetic strandcast that originated from cloning experiments and the toiling of bio-engineering science conducted by the Sith Eternal cult on the planet Exegol. Despite possessing a natural attunement to the Force, and being impressively powerful in the dark side, Snoke's body was deemed an "unworthy" form by Sidious to contain his powerful dark spirit.

  +
Still holding a place in his master's sinister plans, despite not being seen as adequate for his bid to obtain immortality, Sidious found a use for Snoke as a proxy to which he could spread his influence and plans of the Sith across the Galaxy in less direct means than he already was, so the artificial being was installed into the galaxy.

Fall of the Empire
From the shadows of Exegol, Snoke eventually witnessed the fall of the Galactic Empire and the pivotal saga of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker during the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY. In these events, Anakin Skywalker was redeemed by his son and betrayed Snoke's creator, Sidious, which led to his demise, and ultimately led to the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Chosen One, for the foretold destruction of the Sith Order was complete and balance was restored to the Force.

Master of the Force
He would even be no stranger to battle, gaining his own legions of dead, of which's ranks were filled by those who underestimated him. With this, he of course had suffered injury. Despite his new freedom and capability for self determination, Snoke still remained under the influence of his creators, who designed him to play his role in securing the future of the Sith and the orders rebirth, having his personality and goals still orchestrated by Sidious through manipulation. For this reason, Snoke remained unaware of his role as a pawn in Sidious' larger game for all his life. Snoke aided the Imperial remnants the fled the known Galaxy after the final clash of New Republic and Imperial forces and the Battle of Jakku in 5 ABY. Had it not been for the ancient hyperspace trails blazed by the Attendants, a group of mute alien navigators who served Snoke, most of the former Imperial officers would have likely perished while crossing into these uncharted realms of the galaxy. Over the next decade, they were met by secret reinforcements sent by the Emperor ahead of time and bolstered their ranks with the resources and muscle supplied and acquired by Snoke's guidance.

Rise to power
  +

  +
Snoke eventually rose to become Supreme Leader of the First Order, which had been finally established in 21 ABY. The last of the old Imperial leadership, including Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, the political outcast Ormes Apolin and even General Brendol Hux did not suspect Snoke's ascension and were quite surprised when it occurred. This came to be when Snoke sidelined, co-opted or killed many of the former leaders, while others like Armitage Hux, Brendol's son, were spared by Snoke to be used as a tool in his rise to power. Some like Enric Pryde gave way for Snoke because, though the Supreme Leader's abilities were alien to him, he knew not to question the religious beliefs behind them, for he knew they held great power. The rest fell in line quickly, though remaining officers, like General Domaric Quinn, one the First Order's key ground commanders, disagreed with Snoke's reliance on mysticism. But these few officers were kept silent. In his own opinion, Snoke saw himself as an unlikely fulcrum to have been chosen to lead the faction, and knew that history would see him taking over as his master plan, rather than what he believed was improvisational on his part and not his endgame.

  +
Upon his rise to power, Snoke gave no indication to his origins. And much to his subordinates' surprise, he made no design towards the old title of Emperor held by Darth Sidious under the Empire. Nevertheless, he possessed the knowledge and Force ability that made him the undisputed heir to the fallen Emperor's crafted contingency, which single handedly saved the First Order from destruction. Despite holding absolute power as Supreme Leader, Snoke mostly ceded control of the First Order's military to his generals, along with the task of building the First Order's reputation and influence through propaganda, as he was more content to focus on spiritual matters.

Shortly after the destruction of the Hosnian system, resulting in the eradication of the New Republic government and a portion of its fleet, Ren invaded Takodana in search of BB-8. He later deemed the droid unnecessary as he captured a scavenger named Rey, who had seen the final piece of the map to Skywalker's location. Snoke was later upset to hear that the girl resisted Ren's interrogation. Ren defended himself by explaining that Rey was strong in the Force, albeit untrained. As the Resistance base had been discovered, Snoke ordered Hux to destroy the Resistance before they could find Skywalker, and for Ren to bring Rey to him. However, Ren never got the chance, as Rey managed to escape with the help of her new powers.

  +
Subsequently, Starkiller Base was infiltrated by Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Finn, who managed to lower the shields through the aid of a captured Captain Phasma to allow the Resistance fleet to attack the base. Solo then tried to bring Ren back to the light, only for his own son to murder him. In rage and grief, Chewbacca wounded Ren and blew a hole in the superweapon's thermal oscillator, allowing Resistance pilot Poe Dameron to fly in and destroy it, causing catastrophic damage, preventing the solar energy from being contained.

Though Ren had succeeded in killing his father, he ultimately failed his trial of ascendancy, Snoke having sensed his apprentice's inner struggle from afar, this conflict within him only growing and the apprentice more spiritually misguided than ever before. This led to Ren's unbalanced emotions and inability to defeat Rey in their ensuing lightsaber duel within the forests on Starkiller base, much to Snoke's disappointment and annoyance. Following this, when the destruction of Starkiller Base was inevitable, a frantic Hux reported this to Snoke who was remarkably blase about it, instead ordering the general to collect and bring Ren to himself, the Supreme Leader planning on to complete his training.

Snoke began directing several maneuvers designed to eliminate any possibility of hope returning to the galaxy. He empowered General Hux to pursue and destroy the Resistance fleet, which initially failed when an assault on their base not only saw the Resistance slip away but the loss of a First Order dreadnought. Snoke immediately contacted Hux to make his anger clear, using the Force to painfully humiliate the general but was delighted when Hux revealed a way to track the fleet's movements through hyperspace, thereby allowing the First Order to immediately pinpoint their location. Following this, Snoke personally joined the pursuit aboard the Supremacy and summoned Ren to his throne room.

Once Ren entered, the Supreme Leader had Hux within his presence reporting their progress toward advancing on the Resistance, to which Snoke expressed his approval for and dismissed the general. Immediately after his audience with Hux, Snoke turned his attention to his disgraced apprentice inquiring into the condition of his injury sustained at Rey's hand. Snoke rose from his throne and began to reflect on the training of his apprentice up to that point, reciting how he once had faith within his abilities and of his original belief, that with Ben Solo's bloodline, he could have become a new Darth Vader, but now at the present moment, he revealed that perhaps he was indeed rather mistaken.

Having felt Ren's struggle from afar, Snoke remarked on how he had begun to lose faith in him after his failure at Starkiller Base and his further conflict over having murdered his father, commanded the disgraced knight to remove his mask. Snoke's continued taunts, including his apprentice being unbalanced and bested by a greenhorn force user, caused Ren to attempt to attack him, causing the Supreme Leader's guards to react aggressively. Snoke effortlessly brushed aside the attack with a short bolt of Force lightning and subdued Ren easily. This outburst caused the guards to assume their combat stances, but Snoke halted them.

Lumbering back to his throne, he bemoaned that Skywalker had still been alive, and as long as the Jedi persisted in the galaxy, so too did the hope that could defeat them. Claiming it was originally his belief that the master of the Knights of Ren would have been the one to snuff it out, Snoke chastised Ren out of the throne room by telling him that he was just a child with a mask rather than the successor of Darth Vader, and that Vader would be ashamed of him.

Within the period between dismissing Kylo Ren and having Rey brought to him aboard the Supremacy, Snoke was contacted by his master, Sidious, who informed that Luke Skywalker was disrupting the plans of the Sith and Snoke was ordered to report his progress. When Snoke told his master that Rey would soon be delivered to him, the Emperor expressed his approval and congratulated the Supreme Leader for his progress, but offered words of warning because of Snoke's obliviousness to who she truly was. She was in fact, the Emperor's granddaughter, therefore the ideal host for his spirit, trapped in a weak, decaying clone of his original body on Exegol.

Sidious declared that Rey could not become a member of the Jedi Order and commanded Snoke to kill the last Jedi Master, Luke Skywalker. Snoke declared that Kylo Ren would kill Skywalker cruelly and that his weakness was manipulated into the perfect tool for such a task. Sidious dismissed this, and then announced every single Skywalker, including Ren, was now an enemy of the Sith and ordered Snoke to wipe all of them out and end the Skywalker bloodline, causing the Supreme Leader to glare with rage. Snoke was annoyed by his instructions, believing the Emperor had no right to order him to destroy the apprentice he had trained and was taking credit for his work, in building the First Order and destroying the New Republic.
  +
  +
During the end of their exchange, the final plans of the Contingency were put into full effect; Sidious declared the Final Order was beginning and instructed Snoke to bring Rey before him on Exegol, claiming that once she did and took the dark throne, the Jedi would finally be extinct, the Sith would rule the galaxy once again, and peace would be restored. When the transmission ended, Snoke mused to himself that Palpatine was a typical master; someone who always treated his underlings with disdain and constantly reminded them of their place.
  +
  +
Having suspected a unique connection between Rey and Kylo Ren, Snoke believed they were a prophesized Dyad in the Force, however decided to keep this information away from Sidious, having become disillusioned with the Sith Lord. Snoke had decided to betray the Emperor, having made the realization that Rey was likely vital to the "decaying corpse," and intended to kill Rey so he could rule the galaxy himself. Snoke was constantly reminded by Sidious that his power was what the Sith Lord allowed him, and because of that, besides Sidious of course, he was likely "the second most powerful being" to currently exist within the galaxy, and that if he wanted to keep his position as Supreme Leader, he was to obey. Snoke's true motives stemmed from nearly all followers of the dark side; he sought knowledge and power, and wanted further that power for his own gain.

{{Quote|Our Supreme Leader is dead.   +
Upon having Rey brought before him, Snoke was immensely pleased with Ren and claimed his faith within him was restored. Snoke noted about how when darkness rose with the Force, light would meet its power, stating he warned Ren that as he grew stronger his equal in the opposing side would rise to challenge him. Rey before him, the Supreme Leader could feel the power given off by the girl, despite judging her appearance as small and harmless looking, he knew to still not underestimate her, as he reflected on his own legions of defeated adversaries, many of which underestimated him and died for such an error. Commanding her to come to him, Snoke took Rey's weapon, the legendary Skywalker lightsaber, admiring its craftsmanship, and placed it next to him.
  +
  +
Using his formidable powers, Snoke restrained Rey, who had refused, and telekinetically brought her to his reach, the Jedi apprentice shooting words of defiance and claiming he underestimated, not only Luke Skywalker, but also Ben Solo and herself, and that such a thing would be his downfall. Amused, Snoke pridefully chuckled as he revealed his manipulation and influence of her and Ren's connection, even claiming to have created it, and he had orchestrated her falling into a trap, much to Rey and Ren's surprise, as both were entirely oblivious to his third party influence until this outright revelation.
  +
  +
Snoke was gloating his success in gathering Rey before him through Ren, as to him, it now proved without a doubt what he suspected; they shared a unique connection through the Force, a Dyad. Following his revelation, the Supreme Leader commanded her to reveal Skywalker's location. When she refused, he began to tortuously probe her mind to discover Skywalker's whereabouts. After obtaining the knowledge he sought and contemptuously dropped the girl, Snoke laughed and mused that Skywalker had been "so wise" as to hide from him. He decided that once the Resistance was destroyed, he would command his forces to Ahch-To and obliterate the entire Temple Island so Skywalker and the Jedi Order could be given the death he desired.
  +

  +
In more defiance, Rey went on to attempt to summon Anakin Skywalker's weapon into her grasp, which Snoke effortlessly redirected the blade with telekinesis to strike her in the head from behind with a sneer. As a final gesture of contempt, he forced Rey to watch the destruction of the Resistance's remaining ships via his oculus viewing scope operated and designed by the Attendants. Rather than breaking Rey's spirit, however, the sight prompted her to summon Kylo's sword to defy him once more, earning the Supreme Leader's respect as he complimented her for her courage and true Jedi spirit.
  +

Acknowledging Rey now as a genuine threat to both himself and the First Order, Snoke commanded his apprentice to execute her, confident that Ren would not turn despite Rey's faith in his former persona, that of Ben Solo, and boasted that he could read his apprentice's mind and see his every thought and intention. You think you can turn him? Pathetic child, I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten. I see his mind. I see his every intent! Yes, I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true. And now, foolish child, he ignites it, and kills his true enemy!
—Snoke's final words, to Rey and Kylo Ren[src]

Snoke was a dark side strandcast imbued with the power of a force-sensitive who ruled the First Order as Supreme Leader during the New Republic Era. Though he was not to be considered a Sith by his origins, Snoke became a dark Jedi master in his own right and acquired vast knowledge of the dark side.

While pursuing his objectives to destroy both the Resistance and Skywalker, however, Snoke was assassinated by Ren, who sought to rule the galaxy as the new Supreme Leader.

Biography

Creation

As part of their genetic experiments, my followers had attempted to create another being that came to be known as Snoke. Although his body proved unworthy of containing my dark essence, Snoke's natural sensitivity to the Force would make him a powerful puppet nonetheless.
—Darth Sidious[src]
Snokes in a vat

Snoke was an artificial strandcast whose creation was the result of the Sith Eternal's genetic experiments on Exegol.

Snoke[7] was an artificial genetic strandcast[8] that originated from cloning experiments and the toiling of bio-engineering science conducted by the Sith Eternal cult[9] on the planet Exegol.[10] Despite possessing a natural attunement to the Force,[9] and being impressively powerful in the dark side,[8] Snoke's body was deemed an "unworthy" form by Sidious to contain his powerful dark spirit.[9]

Still holding a place in his master's sinister plans,[7] despite not being seen as adequate for his bid to obtain immortality, Sidious found a use for Snoke as a proxy to which he could spread his influence and plans of the Sith across the Galaxy in less direct means than he already was,[9] so the artificial being was installed into the galaxy.[8]

Fall of the Empire

From the shadows[11] of Exegol,[10] Snoke eventually witnessed the fall of the Galactic Empire[12] and the pivotal saga of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker during the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY.[11] In these events, Anakin Skywalker was redeemed by his son and betrayed Snoke's creator, Sidious, which led to his demise, and ultimately led to the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Chosen One, for the foretold destruction of the Sith Order was complete and balance was restored to the Force.

Master of the Force

Despite his new freedom and capability for self determination,[8] Snoke still remained under the influence of his creators, who designed him to play his role in securing the future of the Sith and the orders rebirth,[10] having his personality and goals still orchestrated by Sidious through manipulation.[8] For this reason, Snoke remained unaware of his role as a pawn in Sidious' larger game for all his life. Sidious did this to ensure that Snoke, powerful as he was, would not arise to become a threat to his designs on the galaxy.[13]

Snoke grew into a secretive master of the Force and seeker of ancient lore,[7] establishing bases across the galaxy to house and store any lost arcane relics he uncovered during his expeditions.[10] Though he honed his powers in the Force to an impressive degree, Snoke denied any connection to lineage of the Sith,[8] for the order dark side users became extinct when the last two members of Darth Bane's Rule of Two, Sidious himself and Darth Vader, both perished at the Battle of Endor[14] in 4 ABY.

Establishing the First Order

Taming of the Unknown

Supreme Leader's throne

Years after the Galactic Empire fell, Snoke rose to power as Supreme Leader of the First Order.

First Order-Resistance War

Destruction of Starkiller

Hux reports to Snoke-starkiller

With Starkiller's destruction imminent, Snoke ordered Hux to evacuate the base with Ren.

However, Ren never got the chance, as Rey managed to escape with the help of her new powers.[15]

In rage and grief, Chewbacca wounded Ren and blew a hole in the superweapon's thermal oscillator, allowing Resistance pilot Poe Dameron to fly in and destroy it, causing catastrophic damage, preventing the solar energy from being contained.[15]

Though Ren had succeeded in killing his father, he ultimately failed his trial of ascendancy,[10] Snoke having sensed his apprentice's inner struggle from afar,[14] this conflict within him only growing and the apprentice more spiritually misguided than ever before.[10] This led to Ren's unbalanced emotions[16] and inability to defeat Rey in their ensuing lightsaber duel within the forests on Starkiller base, much to Snoke's disappointment[8] and annoyance.[16] Following this, when the destruction of Starkiller Base was inevitable, a frantic Hux reported this to Snoke who was remarkably blase about it, instead ordering the general to collect and bring Ren to himself, the Supreme Leader planning on to complete his training.[15]

Battle of Oetchi

Tied on a string indeed, General Hux. Well done. The Resistance will soon be in our grasp.
—Snoke, to Armitage Hux[src]
Snoke holo

Furious at the Resistance escaping him, Snoke berated Hux and joined the pursuit for the enemies of the First Order personally.

Snoke immediately contacted Hux to make his anger clear, using the Force to painfully humiliate the general but was delighted when Hux revealed a way to track the fleet's movements through hyperspace, thereby allowing the First Order to immediately pinpoint their location.[16] Following this, Snoke personally joined the pursuit aboard the Supremacy and summoned Ren to his throne room.[7]

Snoke rose from his throne and began to reflect on the training of his apprentice up to that point, reciting how he once had faith within his abilities and of his original belief, that with Ben Solo's bloodline, he could have become a new Darth Vader, but now at the present moment, he revealed that perhaps he was indeed rather mistaken.[17]

Episode VIII Snoke and Kylo Ren

Because of his failure on Starkiller Base, Snoke began to dismiss Ren as a successor to Darth Vader and rather a child in a mask.

Having felt Ren's struggle from afar,[10] Snoke remarked on how he had begun to lose faith in him after his failure at Starkiller Base and his further conflict over having murdered his father, commanded the disgraced knight to remove his mask. This outburst caused the guards to assume their combat stances, but Snoke halted them.[16]

Lumbering back to his throne,[18] he bemoaned that Skywalker had still been alive, and as long as the Jedi persisted in the galaxy, so too did the hope that could defeat them. Claiming it was originally his belief that the master of the Knights of Ren would have been the one to snuff it out, Snoke chastised Ren out of the throne room by telling him that he was just a child with a mask rather than the successor of Darth Vader,[16] and that Vader would be ashamed of him.[19]

New orders

Every single Skywalker, including your apprentice, is now an enemy of the Sith. Wipe them out, all of them. Come to me on Exegol. Bring the girl before me. The Final Order begins.
—Darth Sidious, to Snoke[src]
Palpatine contacts Snoke

Snoke was contacted by Sidious and instructed by him to eliminate the Skywalker bloodline and bring Rey to Exegol.

Within the period between dismissing Kylo Ren and having Rey brought to him aboard the Supremacy,[16] Snoke was contacted by his master, Sidious, who informed that Luke Skywalker was disrupting the plans of the Sith and Snoke was ordered to report his progress. When Snoke told his master that Rey would soon be delivered to him, the Emperor expressed his approval and congratulated the Supreme Leader for his progress, but offered words of warning because of Snoke's obliviousness to who she truly was.[20] She was in fact, the Emperor's granddaughter,[21] therefore the ideal host for his spirit, trapped in a weak, decaying clone of his original body on Exegol.[8]

Sidious dismissed this, and then announced every single Skywalker, including Ren, was now an enemy of the Sith and ordered Snoke to wipe all of them out and end the Skywalker bloodline, causing the Supreme Leader to glare with rage.[20] Snoke was annoyed by his instructions, believing the Emperor had no right to order him to destroy the apprentice he had trained and was taking credit for his work, in building the First Order and destroying the New Republic.[22]

During the end of their exchange, the final plans of the Contingency were put into full effect; Sidious declared the Final Order was beginning and instructed Snoke to bring Rey before him on Exegol, claiming that once she did and took the dark throne, the Jedi would finally be extinct, the Sith would rule the galaxy once again, and peace would be restored.[20] When the transmission ended, Snoke mused to himself that Palpatine was a typical master; someone who always treated his underlings with disdain and constantly reminded them of their place.[22]

Having suspected a unique connection between Rey and Kylo Ren, Snoke believed they were a prophesized Dyad in the Force,[10] however decided to keep this information away from Sidious, having become disillusioned with the Sith Lord.[22] Snoke had decided to betray the Emperor, having made the realization that Rey was likely vital to the "decaying corpse," and intended to kill Rey so he could rule the galaxy himself.[22] Snoke was constantly reminded by Sidious that his power was what the Sith Lord allowed him, and because of that, besides Sidious of course, he was likely "the second most powerful being" to currently exist within the galaxy, and that if he wanted to keep his position as Supreme Leader, he was to obey.[23] Snoke's true motives stemmed from nearly all followers of the dark side; he sought knowledge and power, and wanted further that power for his own gain.[22]

Death of the Supreme Leader

Our Supreme Leader is dead. We have no ruler.
—Armitage Hux[src]
Supreme arrogance

Snoke's manipulation of the connection between Rey and Ren allowed him to lure the girl into coming before him, and proved his suspicions about their bond.

Upon having Rey brought before him, Snoke was immensely pleased with Ren[17] and claimed his faith within him was restored.[19] Snoke noted about how when darkness rose with the Force, light would meet its power, stating he warned Ren that as he grew stronger his equal in the opposing side would rise to challenge him.[17] Rey before him, the Supreme Leader could feel the power given off by the girl, despite judging her appearance as small and harmless looking, he knew to still not underestimate her, as he reflected on his own legions of defeated adversaries, many of which underestimated him and died for such an error.[19] Commanding her to come to him, Snoke took Rey's weapon, the legendary Skywalker lightsaber,[16] admiring its craftsmanship,[19] and placed it next to him.

Amused, Snoke pridefully chuckled as he revealed his manipulation and influence of her and Ren's connection, even claiming to have created it, and he had orchestrated her falling into a trap,[16] much to Rey and Ren's surprise, as both were entirely oblivious to his third party influence until this outright revelation.[19]

Snoke was gloating his success in gathering Rey before him through Ren, as to him, it now proved without a doubt what he suspected; they shared a unique connection through the Force, a Dyad.[10] Following his revelation, the Supreme Leader commanded her to reveal Skywalker's location. When she refused, he began to tortuously probe her mind to discover Skywalker's whereabouts. After obtaining the knowledge he sought and contemptuously dropped the girl, Snoke laughed and mused that Skywalker had been "so wise" as to hide from him. He decided that once the Resistance was destroyed, he would command his forces to Ahch-To and obliterate the entire Temple Island so Skywalker and the Jedi Order could be given the death he desired.[17]

Snoke-tortures-Rey-The-last-Jedi

Snoke obtained the information of Skywalker's location from Rey's mind and declared she was to die at the hands of his apprentice.

Rather than breaking Rey's spirit, however, the sight prompted her to summon Kylo's sword to defy him once more, earning the Supreme Leader's respect as he complimented her for her courage and true Jedi spirit.[16]

Intending to torture the girl with every detail up to the moment of her death, he shut his eyes and described to Rey everything he saw in Ren's mind, turning the lightsaber to "strike true" and igniting it to kill his "true enemy."[16] However, Snoke's visions and Force senses betrayed him.[7] Sensing Ren's connection to the girl, Snoke made a serious error of judgement; aware of his student's connection to the girl his senses were misdirected and he believed that Ren was to strike down the girl, effectively failing to see his apprentice's resolve and hate was directed towards himself, not Rey, and that he intended to betray him.[24]

Snoke-betrayed

Outmanoeuvred by his cunning apprentice, Snoke was bisected at the waist by Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber.

Once he reopened his eyes and awaited the coming strike, his triumphant smile became one of pained surprise as he felt the blade of a lightsaber piercing through his withered and twisted body. At the same time, his telekinetic hold over Rey collapsed. The Supreme Leader looked down to find the Skywalker lightsaber having been turned, aimed, and activated in his direction.[16] As life slipped away,[23] Snoke remained alive long enough to glare at Ren, before the former summoned the active lightsaber to Rey and cut through the Supreme Leader's waist and wrists.[17]

Overthrown by Ren in an act of ascension worthy of Darth Bane's Rule of Two doctrine,[10] Snoke's upper torso then collapsed heavily to the floor at the base of his throne, leaving his hands on the armrests and his lower torso sitting on the throne,[16] and was left dead a second later.[23]

Legacy

Kylo Ren's ascension

Snoke's death created an immediate power vacuum that Ren took advantage of by assuming his fallen master's role as the new Supreme Leader of the First Order, much to the displeasure of Hux. Although Ren desired to rule the galaxy with Rey as his equal, the aspiring Jedi rejected his offer, leading Ren to falsely implicate her in the assassination of Snoke.[16]

Though he was meant to serve as the final crucible in Ren's training, a final test to determine his worthiness as an heir of the Sith legacy,[10] Snoke's death came unexpectedly to Sidious who was now needing to step in and pull the strings himself to manipulate events, including Snoke's failure to secure Rey and bring her to Exegol, to his likening and to direct Kylo Ren and his granddaughter to him. Since his childhood, Kylo Ren had heard a voice inside his mind, and long assumed it to be Snoke.[10] Ren fully expected the voice that plagued his mind sto vanish upon Snoke's death, but was confused when it persisted, if not even stronger than before.[8] Scouring Snoke's old bases to uncover shards of archaic lore[10] and examining his mentor's past, but it turned up no answers and just left him with more questions than answers. This leading to question if perhaps Snoke was being manipulated by someone or something[8] and was not the apex of the First Order's dark side pyramid.[10]

The whole truth

Through Snoke, Sidious circumvented the tradition of the Rule of Two, in which a dark apprentice slays their master to ascend in ultimate power of the dark side of the Force.[8] With Snoke as his proxy, Sidious had reached out to Kylo Ren for years to corrupt and poison him with the dark side and bring him into his service,[9] so when he was used as Ren's final test after[10] being his proxy again as a stand in for power over the First Order,[8] the dying Sith Lord had no further use for him.

Snoke was naturally sensitive to the Force[9] and was particularly strong with the dark side.[14] Despite the Supreme Leader not being trained as a Sith Lord[10] and his abilities not being explicitly Sith in origin, like those embodied by his creator, Darth Sidious, Snoke possessed the knowledge and power to rule the First Order with strength and by Force.[10] Regarding, Snoke mastered several abilities, including telekinesis, force chokes, and telepathy.[25] While his physical strength atrophied along with his wounded body, Snoke remained tremendously strong in the Force until his death.[14]

His teachings blended traditions of both the light and the dark side;[11] his mastery of the Force was so great that Snoke was capable of exerting his power with the barest minimum of gestures to devastating effect even from great distances.[16]

As a master in the ways of the dark side, Snoke could conjure Force lightning from his fingertips—a power he[16] mastered[25] to the point where he could fire it down at a metal surface and let it ricochet right into the intended target.[16]

Personality and traits

Though influenced by Sidious, Snoke was still a vile and cruel individual on his own free will.

Although he was capable of self determination and was autonomous thinking being, Snoke's personality was influenced by his secret master Darth Sidious on Exegol;[8] imposed with a singular focus,[10] Snoke has his actions and goals orchestrated for him by Darth Sidious, much to his obliviousness.[8] Snoke could not even fathom the idea there was a force user in the galaxy more powerful and wiser than himself, his vanity set up genuinely and perfectly to ensure he would not become a threat to his masters larger plans.[13]

Nevertheless, Snoke was considered a "a being of pure evil", and was a "powerful figure on the dark side of the Force". Snoke desired control and power for only himself, and too rule the galaxy through a powerful military and conquest of the weak. But also vulnerable as he was powerful, he took to doing his activities in secret; He was a secretive, enigmatic figure who coveted arcane lore, as part of his desire for knowledge. But Snoke used an intelligent, sophisticated, and at times calm demeanor to mask his more sinister qualities such as cruelty, arrogance, egotism, and narcissism. He was truly a terrifying, monstrous individual, was a cruel master as well as a predator, who identified weakness and exploited it, as demonstrated by how he particularly enjoyed using his powers to penetrate the minds of his victims and subject them to agonizing scenes, picking apart their courage and resolve slowly over time.
