Skor Kalpana is a good man, but he lacks backbone, which is probably why he was voted in.
—Senator Palpatine
Skor Kalpana was a Human male who served as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic during its final decades.
Biography[]
Skor Kalpana was born into the influential Kalpana family. In 48 BBY, he was elected Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, succeeding Samul Frix. Kalpana's party included senators such as Finis Valorum and Palpatine. The latter, who was in fact the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, considered Kalpana to lack any backbone[1] and secretly bugged an Eddicus-class planetary shuttle that Kalpana often rode in.[2]
Towards the end of Kalpana's first term, the Chancellor's elderly age was seen as a detriment to his chances of getting reelected.[3] In 44 BBY, the last year of his first term, Kalpana sent Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn to mediate business with the Offworld Mining Corporation on Bandomeer, unaware that it was in fact a trap set up by the fallen Jedi Xanatos.[4] The ensuing crisis was ultimately resolved by the Jedi but it remained a hanging sword over Kalpana's head as fears began to grow of "dark Jedi" rising up to threaten the Republic.
Kalpana faced another complication later in the year when a crisis sparked by the Stark Commercial Combine spiraled into the Stark Hyperspace War, despite his administration's efforts to seek a peaceful and diplomatic resolution. Further impeding Kalpana and his political goals was the rise of the so-called "Militarist" party within the Senate, spearheaded by Senator Ranulph Tarkin. Ultimately, the conflict was resolved with the aid of the Jedi Order but Kalpana's popularity remained low.[5]
Not long after the conclusion of Stark Hyperspace War, the Mandalorian Civil War that had been afflicting the Outer Rim for the past sixteen years was resolved with the Battle of Galidraan after a Jedi strike team led by Master Dooku defeated the True Mandalorians and forced them to lay down arms, ending the conflict.[6] Despite the Republic's limited involvement, Kalpana began to see an increase in popularity as a result of this.[3] By the end of the year, Kalpana had been reelected to serve a second four-year term.
