Old Republic era

The Sith Remnant was the successor regime to the Sith Triumvirate, which had ruled what remained of Darth Revan's Sith Empire after the end of the Jedi Civil War. Following the destruction of the Triumvirate's leadership, the title of Dark Lord of the Sith was claimed by Meetra Surik, the final student of Darth Traya. Though her assumption of power did not go unchallenged, Surik managed to unify the lesser Sith Lords and consolidated her regime, avoiding open war with the Galactic Republic and prioritizing reconstruction of the Remnant's diminished military and economy.

According to Darth Traya, Revan had secretly founded her empire to serve as the known galaxy's first line of defense against the Second Sith Empire (or "true Sith") in the Unknown Regions, and Meetra Surik meant for the Remnant to serve the same purpose. By 21,108 AR, however, Revan had somehow assumed rule over the true Sith, and the Remnant was instead to act as a vanguard for their invasion of the Galactic Republic.

History[]

Background[]

Though the Republic had been severely damaged by the end of the Jedi Civil War, it still possessed enough military strength to hold and police its own territory, as well as enough infrastructure (particularly in the Core Worlds) to commence reconstruction. By contrast, the Sith Civil War left Revan's empire devastated. Along with the Star Forge, greater than half of its military production facilities were destroyed, many key resource centers were lost, and thousands of colonies and outposts were abandoned in hasty retreats. Shifting and fragile alliances among the Sith Lords compromised supply lines, and embargoes by the Republic starved vast portions of the empire of imported goods and resources. By the time order was reestablished under the Sith Triumvirate, the former empire was left politically, economically, and militarily stagnant. Only a handful of fully operational capital shipyards and repair yards remained.

Government and politics[]

At the original founding of her empire, Darth Revan had decreed that every governor at the planetary level and above should be a fully initiated and trained Sith who been proven as a leader in battle. Additionally, they were expected to be educated in political philosophy, administration, propaganda, and other fields necessary to effectively control their territory. This system was never uniformly implemented even in Revan's time, however, and it suffered degradation following her disappearance. Though most star systems were ruled by a Sith during the Triumvirate and the Remnant, these governors often lacked administrative and political acumen. As such, they largely maintained social order through open totalitarianism and conspicuous military presence.

Still, Remnant military forces were badly depleted from the recent wars, and they were concentrated at major population centers, key resource sites, and other strategically important locations. This allowed corruption and lawlessness to take hold in less important systems. On the mining world of Gulvitch, for instance, the Telthek Nest shadowport operated with impunity despite being known to the planetary governor.

Astrography[]

Besides a few secret outposts scattered across the galaxy, the Sith Remnant was confined to a small pocket of territory in the northeastern Outer Rim. It controlled the Radama Void, the Sith Ancestral Worlds, and the Gordian Reach, as well as portions of the Thesme and Thrasybule sectors. Most of its major industrial planets were located in the Gordian. Its political and administrative center was the Esstran sector capital of Ord Radama, which had served the same function under Revan's Sith Empire. Malachor V initially served as the throne of the reigning Dark Lord and center of the Remnant Sith Order. After Malachor's destruction in 21,108, the Order was relocated to Thule.
