Tirien Kal-Di: “The Sith will go out of their way to make you a lot more than uncomfortable. Sil Kadych is a hard and dangerous man, but he's what he's needed to be for the work he's done. He's on the side of good, but being good doesn't mean being nice.”
―Narasi and Tirien discuss Sil Kadych
Sil Kadych (/sɪl ˈkɑ.dɪtʃ/) was a male Umbaran Jedi Master who served the Jedi Order during the New Sith Wars. A Jedi Guardian, he was infamous among Jedi and Sith alike as an extremely skillful and dangerous warrior, called "the Bane of Darths" for the number of Sith Lords he had killed.
Biography[]
The Crescentia[]
At some point before 1,387 BBY, Kadych encountered the Sith Lord Darth Hokhtan; both survived the encounter, but with mutual enmity tinged with professional respect.
By 1,388 BBY, Master Kadych was the senior Jedi Master and head of the praxeum Council aboard the Crescentia, a Jedi praxeum ship. He served alongside the Caamasi Jedi Master Multiqi La'altac who, for reasons no other being understood, was his best friend. Narasi Rican and many other Padawans found Kadych cold and believed he tried to deliberately intimidate and unbalance them.
Specialist Experience[]
In 1,387 BBY, Mali Darakhan and Tirien Kal-Di came to the Crescentia 's praxeum council with word of Vedya Gasald's and Zirist Lakalt's assault on Milagro. The two Jedi requested a mission, but the council voted against the plan 4-1, with only Kadych in favor. Correctly intuiting that Mali would go anyway and that Tirien would offer him the use of the Second Chance, Kadych awaited the party there, though he was mildly surprised to see it included not only Mali's apprentice Aldayr Nikodon, but also Tirien, Narasi, and even Slejux Nissatak. Reading Mali's mind to discover the Corellian's worry about Master Tyson Dumiel trying to lead the Corellian Jedi away from the Order proper, Kadych agreed to accompany the mission.
On Milagro, Kadych was a terror when fighting, but began to earn the distaste of the Milagro Resistance for his caustic commentary and seeming indifference to their plight; when Tirien called him on his apparently unfeeling objectivity to the murder of Prime Minister Sendur Sholbo, he warned the young Knight about allowing emotion to cloud his judgment.
The Jedi and the Resistance finally planned an attack on Milagro's government center, targeting Darths Vaszas and Vandak. He, Mali, and Aldayr wiped out Vaszas's Sith Acolyte and dark side adept guards, but inside the legislative assembly room they found Vaszas, Darth Kra'all, and Darth Hokhtan. Commanding Mali and Aldayr to deal with Kra'all, Kadych engaged Vaszas and Hokhtan, striking down Vaszas when Hokhtan left him briefly open. He dueled Hokhtan, intuiting the weakness in the Sith's left arm, and won the duel by singing Hokhtan's sword shoulder and bisecting his kneecap. As he focused on Hokhtan, however, he was stabbed from behind by Darth Vandak. Hokhtan further tortured Kadych while Vandak went to duel Mali and Tirien; by the time the two Knights briefly overpowered Vandak and rescued their master, Kadych was unconscious and near death.
Slejux kept Kadych clinging to life while the Jedi fled to Corellia, where he was placed in a bacta tank. Even after nearly a week, Kadych's survival was iffy, and Corellia's doctors were unsure how mentally or physically capable he would be even if he did wake. Tirien, Slejux, and Narasi returned to the Crescentia to face the praxeum council's judgment, but left Kadych with Mali and Corellians, feeling it was too dangerous to move him.
Convalescence[]
Kadych's lungs and kidneys were replaced with cybernetics, though his kidneys required periodic dialysis. His body had been badly injured by Darth Hokhtan's Force lightning, but he worked to regain his ability to walk. A year later, Kadych advised Mali Darakhan for his counter-invasion of Milagro. Kadych occasionally spoke with Tyson Dumiel and Ainar Zylorus, though he made no secret of his disdain for the Corellian Jedi being reestablished as a separate faction and refused to take up residence at the Green Jedi Enclave.
When Tem-Fol-Rytil visited Corellia for Satir and Galera Solo's funeral, he spoke with Kadych, who candidly advised him that the Jedi were the true governors of the Republic until the conflict with the Sith ended, and urged him to keep dissident Jedi in the fold.
Ascent[]
Tem-Fol-Rytil invited Kadych back to Coruscant for Elata Cazars's memorial service after she was killed by Valin Aresh. While present in the Jedi Temple, Kadych counseled a grieving Mali, whose former Padawan Aldayr Nikodon had been killed during the mission to the Redeemer. Subsequently, as the Jedi High Council struggled to fill Cazars's life seat, Tem-Fol-Rytil persuaded the Council to elect Kadych its newest member.
Powers and Abilities[]
A Juyo master, Sil Kadych was, along with Elata Cazars, one of the deadliest lightsaber combatants in the Jedi Order, responsible for the deaths of numerous Sith Lords and lesser dark siders. He was able to kill four Sith Acolytes in the space of three breaths, and defeated both Darth Vaszas and Darth Hokhtan—masters themselves—in two-on-one combat despite Juyo's theoretical weakness against multiple adversaries.
Kadych's combat precognition allowed him to recognize potential threats in coming duels and negate them ahead of time.
Appearance and Personality[]
Like all Umbarans, Kadych was bald and ghostly pale, with a lithely muscular build. He stood 1.80 meters tall and had eyes so pale gray that a quick glance gave the impression he had no irises at all, merely pupils. As a Jedi Guardian, he wielded a lightsaber with a blue blade. After convalescing from his injuries, he walked with a cane.
Many beings felt Kadych was hard, cold, unfriendly, and emotionless; Nal Chun went so far as to consider him a psychopath. Tirien Kal-Di had a more neutral view—that Kadych, while undeniably a hard man, was what war with the Sith required him to be, and steadfastly devoted to the light side despite his unpleasant personality traits.
Behind the Scenes[]
Sil Kadych's nickname, "the Bane of Darths", is of course a play on Darth Bane.
