The Siege of Quadan VI, also known as the Battle for Quadan VI or the Quadan VI campaign, was a prolonged engagement fought over Quadan VI late in the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems. The Republic launched an assault on Separatist fortress world Quadan VI shortly after their victory at the Battle of Hosnian Prime, as the planet contained massive Separatist droid factories. However, General Yosip Zagoonga resisted the Republic invasion, causing more Republic ships and clone troopers to come as reinforcements. This distracted the Republic from the Confederacy navy preparing for the Battle of Coruscant, which began only a few hours after the Republic secured Quadan VI.
Prelude[]
Quadan VI
During the Clone Wars fought between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Outer Rim world of Quadan VI initially attempted to remain in space. However, the Techno Union, a Separatist-aligned conglomerate, took over the Quadan system and eventually constructed massive battle droid factories on the planet. These factories were heavily automated and extracted all nearby natural resources to replicate themselves. Once the factories could not find enough natural resources, they would terrorize the local populace by destroying civilian settlements for building materials. Quadan VI eventually became a Confederate fortress world protected by a sizeable fleet. While official production numbers were deliberately nonexistent, the factories of Quadan VI manufactured an estimated 100 to 600 million battle droids throughout the Clone Wars, in addition to many AATs, droid tanks, and starfighters.
In 19 BBY, the Outer Rim Sieges began, where the Galactic Republic pushed the Confederacy to the brink by sieging their remaining holdings in the Outer Rim Territories. In response to this, Separatist Droid Army General Yosip Zagoonga attempted to launch an assault on the Core Worlds planet of Hosnian Prime. After a lengthy battle, General Zagoonga lost his flagship Queen of Independence and retreated to Quadan VI aboard the Pride of Frenzan. The 96th Legion pursued General Zagoonga, as they intended to shorten the war in the region by capturing or killing him. The Republic discovered that Zagoonga was at Quadan VI, so part of the Republic 20th Fleet was dispatched along with the 96th Legion. Before they arrived, Count Dooku ordered General Zagoonga to make as much Republic forces come to Quadan VI as possible in order to cover massive scores of Separatist capital ships moving to staging areas, where they would use a secret hyperspace route for an attack on Coruscant.
The battle[]
As the Republic forces engaged the Separatists and brought LAAT/is to the surface, it became clear that the Separatist fleet outgunned them and that the droid forces present were far greater than previously believed. So Jedi General Jon Ternath requested reinforcements, and multiple Republic warships were taken from other areas to assist. This resulted in the Republic having less control over nearby space, allowing Separatist ships to begin moving through undetected.
The battle went on for several days, with clone troopers struggling to win against the overwhelming battle droid forces. Realizing that victory would be almost impossible with those factories producing battle droids, the Republic Admiral Enrit Falor reluctantly ordered orbital bombardment to commence after the locations of the factories were confirmed. The bombardment obliterated all droid factories and destroyed hundreds of thousands of battle droids, although many civilians were killed in the process and many battle droids led by General Zagoonga remained on the planet.
General Zagoonga considered the ongoing siege to be a dire emergency for the Separatists, so he called upon the Subjugator-class heavy cruiser Enmity, which was located nearby. The Enmity soon arrived, and the Republic responded by spreading their ships apart so that several could not be disabled with one shot from the mega-ion cannon. However, the Enmity still managed to disable a few Star Destroyers, all of which were annihilated. The Republic then moved in to directly engage the Separatists so that the Enmity risked disabling friendly ships by using its ion cannons. While the droid commanders were in shock, the Republic concentrated fire on the Enmity, eventually inflicting heavy damage on the immense vessel. The crippled Enmity fell victim to Quadan VI's gravity and plummeted into an ocean.
With the loss of the Enmity and droid forces being rapidly depleted, General Zagoonga decided to return to the Pride of Frenzan and retreated with his few surviving forces. Although he had lost Quadan VI and almost all Confederate forces present, General Zagoonga completed his objective of distracting the Republic from Separatist fleet movement.
Aftermath[]
The Battle of Coruscant began only a few hours after the conclusion of the Siege of Quadan VI, and Republic ships that survived the battle arrived at the Republic's capital. Zagoonga's actions proved critical in keeping the preparations for the Battle of Coruscant secret, although the CIS lost Count Dooku and ultimately blew their last chance at winning the Clone Wars, as was intended by Darth Sidious. General Yosip Zagoonga fled to Lagobah with the Pride of Frenzan and the only other two Confederate capital ships to survive the battle, both of which were Munificent-class star frigates. However, he was again tracked down by the 96th Legion, resulting in the Battle of Lagobah, which ended with the execution of Order 66.
