"Who are you?!" Hyde demanded as Hokan reached beneath his cloak, pulling out his lightsaber hilt. "I'm a Jedi Knight," the man said, his voice still cool. Then it chilled further as he said, "And I want what you stole from that Republic agent." "Should've protected him better, shouldn't you?" Hyde taunted, reaching for his own lightsaber. "Yes," the man said flatly, "I should have. I should have gotten here earlier. I didn't, but I can make sure his sacrifice wasn't in vain." "The datacard," he said, voice hardening. "Give it to me." "Come and take it, Jedi!" Hokan snarled, igniting his ruby blade, and Hyde followed an instant later. "You're no match for two Sith, Jedi!" Hyde taunted; they would surely become Sith when they returned successful. "One little Jedi, all alone!" The man produced a curved lightsaber hilt and ignited the green blade. "I work best alone." |

Plot Summary[]
On Ciutric IV, capital of Valin Aresh’s Sith Empire, dark side adepts So So Hokan and Taree Hyde attempt to flee with intelligence on a Republic defense grid, but are intercepted and killed by Jedi Knight Tirien Kal-Di. When word of their failure reaches Sith Lord Nerlus Zedum, he charges the Mirialan Sith Acolyte Alecto to undertake a new mission to make up for the failure.
On Coruscant, the Jedi Council praises Tirien for his achievement, but the young Knight quickly butts heads with the Council masters when they instruct him to take a Padawan against his wishes. After a night of meditation he reluctantly concedes to their request and goes to meet his Padawan, Narasi Rican. Jedi Battlemaster Argus Z’dar praises Narasi’s skills, but speculates that she has been passed over by other Jedi despite her talents because she is a Zygerrian—a species best known for running a slaving Empire and collaborating with the Sith. Narasi is ecstatic to be Tirien’s Padawan, though he is frustrated by her cheery demeanor and lack of knowledge about the broader galaxy.
Narasi’s first week of training is awkward for both sides, and Narasi confides in her best friend Zilq that she thinks Tirien doesn’t like her. The Council calls Tirien and Narasi to defend Republic senator Glavial Iltek of Taanab from an assassination attempt. Though she still finds him aloof, Narasi is both reassured and touched when Tirien defends her against the prejudice of Iltek’s Human guards. The senator himself, though not overjoyed to be accompanied by a Zygerrian in front of his voters, receives the Jedi’s protection gratefully.
While Iltek is giving a speech on Taanab, Alecto opens fire on him with a sniper rifle, though Tirien manages to deflect the shots. Leaving Narasi to protect Iltek, he pursues and is waylaid by four gunmen. Narasi comes to his aid and kills one of the shooters, though she is deeply affected by the killing and Tirien has to kill the other three to protect her. By the time he runs down Alecto in the hangar bay, he is too late to stop her from fleeing.
Having returned to Iltek, Narasi works with his guards to protect him against Alecto’s backup hit squad of mercenaries until Tirien comes to their aid, killing three mercenaries and disabling a fourth, though the fourth commits suicide rather than be taken and questioned. Frustrated by his apprentice’s failure to follow orders, he holds her responsible for the deaths of two guards who died before she got back to Iltek, leaving Narasi hollowed by the accusation.
