Shiim was one of the nine marks of contact employed in lightsaber combat. It described a glancing blow made with the edge of a lightsaber blade. Jedi, Sith, Centurions, and many other Force users often considered it an inferior mark of contact because of its (generally) inconclusive nature, although some Sith and Dark Jedi employed shiim as a method of torture.
Notable uses[]
Darth Vandak was the victim of two particularly catastrophic shiims in quick succession—Tirien Kal-Di and Mali Darakhan cut off one of his Anzat proboscises each, leaving Vandak unable to feed on soup, which subsequently drove him insane.[1] Vandak himself used shiim throughout the Duel on Gyndine, notably against Krajjey in order to slow the ZeHethbra down.[2]
Darth Alecto killed Jedi Master Nawsa Arodion with a brutal shiim, using the length of her lightsaber blade to cut Arodion's throat, whereupon she suffocated.[3]
The Xhal Centurion Kyzk, who lacked the upper body strength to use hard Ataru blows or block hard strikes, developed a unique approach to Ataru in which she sought to land several shiim blows until her enemy was dazed and distracted by pain, after which she would finally use a more definitive mark to end the battle.
During the Nightmare War, Kasavo Shei often tortured prisoners with shiim.
Vev Nar landed a light cut on Kieran Sapphire during the Battle of the Sith Star before the Nei cut him in half.
Zee Pek managed to land a shiim blow on Breek Zagrev's left arm during their duel in the Zi-Kree Sector before Zagrev killed him. Halambo, Zee Pek's master, landed other shiim strikes on Zagrev later in the same duel.
