Old Republic era

Shaelo Rican was a male Zygerrian slaver, best known to galactic history as the father of the Jedi Padawan Narasi Rican.

Shaelo served in the Zygerrian Slave Empire's slaving fleet, where he quickly earned a reputation for efficiency in collecting the most useful slaves—intelligent specialists who could fill specific niches in society, and physically strong and resilient beings who could be put to manual labor and expected to survive years or decades of it. Shaelo's skills saw him promoted rapidly. He married Demi Tardrec young, and they had Narasi after only a few years of marriage.

Shaelo's successes made him wealthy, and he was able to afford a villa in Zygerria's capital and a household complement of slaves. By the time Narasi was young girl, Shaelo had his own ship and was responsible for several daring raids. However, his successes led to increased demands and higher expectations from Zygerria's king. Eventually the quotas became too much to keep up with. Feeling his prestige slipping, Shaelo resorted to capturing slaves from a world controlled by the New Sith Empire, who were subsequently sold back to the Sith.

When the Sith Lords discovered the duplicity in 1,397 BBY they were outraged, and the High King of Zygerria offered them Shaelo's head out of contritition. Shaelo and his family had to go on the run, and narrowly dodged bounty hunters over the following years. On Zygerria, Shaelo was given the derisive nickname "Shaelo Shunyanda". Shaelo took to drinking heavily, especially Flameouts, and became short with his wife and daughter. When Demi turned Narasi over to the Jedi for training, Shaelo was torn between outrage and relief at not having the weakest link to feed and protect.

The Ricans survived on the run for a decade, but in 1,387 BBY the Mandalorian bounty hunter and mercenary San Pavac tracked them down. Both resisted capture, and Pavac killed Shaelo with a disruptor shot.
