Shadows of the Jedi: The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac is a cancelled Star Wars fan fiction novel written by Brandon Rhea from 2006 to early 2008. The novel was set to be the first of a trilogy based around the titular character, Ussej Padric Bac, who Rhea role-played on The Star Wars RP. It went through three different incarnations, one in 2006 and two in 2007, before it was cancelled. Rhea briefly considered writing a new version in 2010, but those plans never came to fruition.
In its various incarnations, The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac told the story of Ussej, a Jedi Knight who lived during the Great Territorial War. Ussej had to deal with his loyalty to the Jedi Order, his growing feelings for Laili Jeyna Rendar, and his conflicts with Darth Ravinos—Laili's brother, formerly known as Kit Corwin Rendar. He also takes his first steps towards his destiny as the Shaman of the Whils.
Planned sequels and prequels
When he started to write The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac, Brandon intended to write two sequels: The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac II and The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac III. The Roman numerals referred to names of characters, rather than the book number, specifically Ussej Padric Bac II and Ussej Padric Bac III—like the original Ussej, Ussej Padric Bac III was also one of Brandon's role-playing characters. If written, the second novel would have focused on Ussej finally becoming the Shaman of the Whills, and it also would have placed a focus on his son, Ussej Padric Bac II. The third novel would have seen his grandson as the primary character, dealing with a holy war between the Jedi and the Bendu Order during the Great Sovereign Crusades, with the original Ussej appearing as a ghost. Although neither of those novels were written, the events of the third novel were part of The Star Wars RP and its lore.
Early versions of Star Wars: Episode I - The Chosen One, Brandon's reboot of the Star Wars Saga, also saw Ussej returning as a ghost. In that novel, he appeared as the Shaman of the Whills, with the intention of helping Anakin Skywalker fulfill his destiny as the Chosen One. That novel was never completed either, so Ussej only made a few brief appearances.
In addition to sequels, Rhea once planned to write a prequel series called Chronicles of the Great War, set throughout the course of the Great Territorial War. This series would have been set before the events of The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac, showing Ussej fight the Sith throughout the war, alongside Damien Nightblade and Kit Rendar. This series was never written, though Rhea—along with fellow fan fiction author Squishy Vic—once began writing a novel set before Chronicles of the Great War. That novel was titled Knights of the Old Republic: In the Shadow of Malachor. It was set in the aftermath of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and featured Ussej as a child. Like the others, this was never completed.
