Rank insignia for sergeant major within the Republic Marines.

Sergeant Major was a senior non-commissioned officer rank which was part of the command structure of most military forces throughout the galaxy. Held by career soldiers with long histories of successful service, the rank carried with it significant responsibilities; sergeants major were typically the highest-ranking enlisted being to serve within battalions, regiments, or larger line units. Responsibilities included advocating for and overseeing the conditions and morale of their respective unit's enlisted personnel and non-commissioned officers of lower grade. The rank was usually divided into three grades:

Grades[]

  • Sergeant Major: Holders of this rank were typically the senior non-commissioned officer for battalion- and regimental-sized units. Other times they served as senior enlisted aides to officers of flag rank (Admiral or General).
  • Command Sergeant Major: Holders of this advanced grade typically served as the senior non-commissioned officer for division- or corps-level formations, senior enlistees of major military bases, or aides to military department heads.
  • Sergeant Major of the Army/Marine Corps: This was the highest-possible rank attainable by a non-commissioned officer, and was associated with the highest standards of the service which holders of this rank represented; in this case, the Republic Army and Republic Marines. Typically, only one such being at a time was ever so vetted.
