Rank insignia for sergeant within the Republic Marines.
Good NCOs are one of the keys to success in battle; during combat, an experienced sergeant is worth a dozen junior officers.
—Anonymous Republic War College instructor
Sergeant was a non-commissioned officer rank within most military forces across the galaxy. These included the Republic Army, Republic Marines, Imperial Army, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), and many others. It was often split into varying grades.
Grades[]
- Sergeant: Basic non-commissioned officer rank, second-lowest after corporal and often referred to as "buck sergeant." Often served as seconds to squad leaders or as specialists within a platoon of soldiers.
- Staff Sergeant: Often served as squad leaders, directing units of ten to twelve soldiers in battle. They also served as company-level specialists or junior military instructors.
- Gunnery Sergeant/Sergeant First Class: Often served as the lead NCOs of military platoons. Also served as drill instructors for recruit basic training. Gunnery Sergeants were unique to the Republic Marines and were roughly equal to sergeants first class.
- Master Sergeant/First Sergeant: Roughly equal in rank; master sergeants served as staff aides to company and battalion-level officers or as senior drill instructors for recruit and post recruit training. First sergeants served as the lead NCO for company-level units. Within the Republic Marines however, this was a separate rank.
- Master Gunnery Sergeant: Unique to the Republic Marines; often served as aides to battalion and division-level officers or as senior drill instructors for post-recruit and advanced training courses.
- Sergeant Major: Typically served as lead battalion non-commissioned officers or as staff aides to flag-rank officers (admirals or generals).
- Command Sergeant Major: Often the highest possible enlisted rank within major military services, responsible for overseeing the coordination and conciliation of large numbers of officers and enlisted personnel.
