The Senate of the Union, commonly known as the Union Senate, was the legislative branch of the Union of Earth States and was led by the Union Secretary of State. The Union States Capitol served as the Senate's headquarters located in Williamtown, Nortalia.
There were two political parties within the Senate: Federalists and Traditionalists. Both often clashed with one another, the latter believing an alliance was better for Earth rather than a single-ruling government which they saw as susceptible to corruption—eventually this corruption took roots within the former.
Following the defeat in 18 BBY, the Union Senate was reorganized into the Earth Imperial Senate with the Earth Emperor as its leader. However in 22 ABY, the Senate was restored by the Nakamura Empire following Operation: Liberty, but both the Federalist and Traditionalist Parties never reformed.

With the assassination of the President, it is the duty of this Senate to authorize that the current Secretary of State will be sworn in as President of the Union States. As a result of continued insurrection, the Union Armed Forces will concentrate its resources and efforts to dealing with the insurrection force plaguing the Union States.

As the legislative branch, the Union Senate was responsible for the creation of new laws and to have them passed through the Senate which would then be signed by the Union President to finalize and make said laws official. However due to the Federalist Party's corruption, they used the Senate to further their own goals.
