Sâdris (/sæ'dʁiːs/ sa-DRHEES), more commonly Basicized as Sedriss (/'sɛ.drɪs/ SEH-drihs),[1][2] was an ancient Sith honorific of indeterminate meaning in the Sith language that was believed to have originated around the same time as the Sith/Rakata title "Darth."[3][4] This title was applied to many different Force users over the history of the Sith and was held by members of the Sith species, the various incarnations of the Sith Empire, and the subsequent Sith Order.

The last reigning Dark Lord of the Sith and Jen'ari of the Old Sith Empire, Naga Sadow, was obsessed with many facets of ancient Sith culture and society during his life,[5] and was the first of the modern Sith Lords to use the ancient Sith title of Darth.[6] In keeping with this passion for the past, he was believed by some to have renewed the practice of bestowing the similarly ancient courtesy title of Sedriss upon talented Sith during the Golden Age of the Sith. The title was believed to have been used to denote a senior member of the Kissai priest caste[7] who was a capable Sith sorcerer or alchemist but not an anointed Sith Lord.

Millennia later, the title was adopted by Qaga Lok, the leader of the Galactic Empire's Dark Side Elite,[8] upon his entry into Emperor Palpatine's service during the Imperial period.[9] Retaining the initials of his birth name, he was thereafter referred to as Sedriss QL, a convention he retained upon his promotion to Imperial Executor[9] and kept until his death in 10 ABY.[10]

Behind the scenes

The theory that "Sedriss" was a Sith language title rather than just an untranslated Sith word comes from a marginal comment mentioned in the German language translation of The Official Star Wars Fact File 85. This extract defines "Sedriss" as "wie 'Darth' ein Titel aus der alten Sprache der Sith," basically translating to "like 'Darth' a title from the old language of the Sith."

Notes and references

  1. The letter "e" does not exist in the Sith language as developed by Ben Grossblatt. As such, a more correct Sith version of the word would instead make use of the phoneme â as in "bash."
