The position of Sector Magister was created in the Golden Empire as part of the 65 Reforms. The military officer holding it had military command of all forces of the Glorious Armada of the Golden Empire assigned to that sector.
From the foundation of the Golden Empire until 149 ABY, the Empire's military was heavily centralized; the Sovereign and the Prime Legate commanded all forces with very little subdivision above the Cohort or ship level. In 149, the Reawakened attacked the Empire and began the Nightmare War, devastating a dozen Royal worlds. After they were annihilated, Queen Rin Sakaros and Prime Legate Sorrik met with numerous advisors to address the flaws which had allowed the Dark Jedi to cause so much initial damage in the first place.
The group concluded that, while the top-down organizational style allowed effective use of the Empire in military campaigns, it imperiled member worlds by making them vulnerable to surprise attack. In conjunction with her creation of sector-level government and the posts of Procurator and Advocate, Rin established the post of Sector Magister.
Duties and authority[]
A Sector Magister served as the senior military commander in a sector. The Magister had command authority over every member of the Army, Navy, and Starfighter Corps assigned to that sector's defense force. Magisters could organize fleets and battle groups of their forces and move units from world to world within the sector.
In the event of invasion, the sector Procurator was commander-in-chief of the sector's forces, with the Sector Magister as supreme commander in the field. Magisters were charged with the defense of their sectors against all external threats, though they could also use military force against pirates and other internal threats with the Procurator's approval.
Service[]
Sector Magister was a title, not a rank, although the person in the office was customarily addressed as "Sector Magister" or "Magister", rather than by his permanent rank. The Prime Legate appointed and dismissed each Sector Magister, though the Sovereign or a Royal Executor could make appointments and dismissals as well. Any officer could be appointed Sector Magister and had authority over all others assigned to the sector's force, even in the event that those beings technically outranked the Magister. However, in practice, those appointed Sector Magisters were usually very senior and experienced officers.
As a badge of office, Sorrik authorized Sector Magisters to wear red stoles with silver embroidery.
