The Second Sith Empire was the successor state to the Old Sith Empire, established in the Unknown Regions by Lord Tenebrae around 20,060 AR. Having suffered a crushing defeat in the Great Hyperspace War, the empire collapsed from infighting and from a campaign of reprisal by the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order. Rather than fighting back, Tenebrae gathered a fleet of refugees at Malachor V and led them in a perilous voyage to the western galactic disk, which was largely uncharted. The Sith eventually settled on a world called Exegol, where Tenebrae was declared emperor. For a thousand years the Second Empire flourished, conquering many neighboring states and becoming the dominant power in the greater Unknown Regions. However, they always intended to return to the "known" galaxy and take revenge on the unsuspecting Republic.
Though the "civilized" galaxy was unaware that the Sith people had survived, certain Jedi such as Vima Sunrider suspected that an unknown dark power—one unconnected to the Sith Brotherhood of Exar Kun—had played a role in triggering the Mandalorian Wars. Revan learned of the Second Empire's existence after discovering Trayus Academy on Malachor V, as did her mentor Kreia, who referred to them as the "true Sith". After the end of the Mandalorian Wars, it is thought that Revan ventured to the Second Empire and encountered its emperor, Vitiate. Darth Revan later established her own Sith Empire and sought to conquer the Republic herself, but Kreia believed that her student did this in order to create a galactic government which would withstand the inevitable invasion of the true Sith. For unknown reasons, Revan disappeared during the Jedi Civil War and returned to the Unknown Regions. Years later the Jedi Exile Meetra Surik would follow in her footsteps.
What transpired after this remains obscure, but by 21,108 AR Darth Revan had apparently killed Vitiate with the help of Meetra Surik and other allies. Rather than continue to undermine the Second Empire, however, Revan claimed the throne for herself as Empress of the Sith, planning to conduct the invasion of the Republic according to her own designs. She failed to account for the defection of Atton Rand, who warned the Republic of the true Sith's existence and helped to destroy Malachor V. While this robbed the Sith of the element of surprise and disrupted Revan's plans, it was known that the invasion had only been delayed by a few months.
Behind the scenes[]
The Second Sith Empire is the primary villainous force in the Fate of the Lost Jedi series. The author hopes to distinguish these Sith from those of The Old Republic by connecting them more closely to the Sith featured in the Tales of the Jedi comics.
