The Republic of Systems, more commonly known as the Republic, the Galactic Republic, and after its fall, the Old Republic, was a democratic republic that, at its hieght, ruled much of the galaxy from the Core to the Mid Rim. It was governed by the Republic Senate, a body made up of elected represtatives from member sectors, who created the laws in the Republic. From among themselves, they elected a Chairman, who acted as the Head of State.
It was founded in 7658 BBY by several key systems in the Core, including Alderaan, Corellia, Duro, and Coruscant, with the latter becoming the nascent government's capital world. Over the next several millenia, it explored and colonized vast portions of the galaxy, with new member worlds recieving representation in the Senate. In 5117 BBY, they came into contact with the Sith, which led to a war that would've destroyed the Republic had it not been for the intervention of the Jedi Order, who defeated the Sith invasion. From then on, the Jedi and the Republic became close allies, with the Jedi building a temple on Coruscant.
The end of the Republic of Systems would come about due to the machinations of the Sith Emperor. During the Mandalorian Crusade, much of the Republic's infastructure was destroyed by the Mandalorians, though the Republic would ultimately defeat the Mandalorians at the Battle of Mandalore in 1038 BBY. However, the weakened Republic would soon be invaded by the Sith Empire, which had been thought dead for centuries, as well as the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders and the Zygerrian Slave Empire. Despite the resilience of the Republic and its Jedi allies, the Empire captured most of the Republic's territory, and, during Operation: Tuk'ata's Heart, conquered the Core, including Coruscant. The planet was sacked, the Jedi Temple and Senate Building razed to the ground, and all remaining plant life on the planet was destroyed as revenge for the Mandalorian Cataclysm caused by the Republic.
The survivors would go on to create the Army of Light, and, due to Sith infighting spurred on by the Emperor, the Sith Empire fell, with all Sith being believed dead. The Liberation Army would found the Galactic Republic in 1028 BBY, which would stand until the end of the Clone Wars.
History[]
Formation and expansion[]
The Republic of Systems was founded in 7,658 BBY by the Core Founders, representatives of 22 star systems in the Galactic Core. The Core Founders passed the Constitution of the Republic of Systems on Coruscant, which established the Republic's government structure. Coruscant became the capital of the nascent Republic and the Fortress of Zhell, an ancient fortress that had been the seat of Coruscant's government for centuries and was widely seen as indestructible, became the Republic Senate Building.
Immediately after its formation, the Republic was already contending with nearby rivals, including the Herglic Hegemony and the Yinchorri. The Republic's military initially struggled with disunity, as its troops were unaccustomed to working with the forces from other planets. However, they were eventually able to overcome this challenge, largely defeating the Yichorri and making an alliance with the Herglics, further expanding Republic space.
As it soldified its power in the Core, the Republic sponsored many exploration and colonization efforts into the Inner Rim, attempting to gradually bring newly discovered planets into the Republic. Occasionally, Republic troops were forced to intervene to protect its colonists, but they prefered not to militarily conquer new planets. Around this time, the Senate created the sector system to better organize the Republic's bureacracy, and changed the election of senators to be based on sectors, rather than systems.
Jedi encounters[]
The Republic was aware of the Jedi Orer for most of its existance, but largely ignored them, finding the Jedi strange. The Republic didn't mind the Jedi, as they mostly kept to themselves, only leaving their planets to recruit more Jedi. However, this relationship changed in 5,117 BBY, when Republic explorers first stumbled upon the Sith Empire on the planet Roche.
The Sith and their Massassi armies quickly invaded the Republic, who was caught off guard by the sudden attack. The Empire also held a military advantage over the Republic, as Republic troops were unprepared to face Sith Lords, and the Empire's Massassi warriors were far larger and stronger than their Republic counterparts. Before long, the Sith had invaded the Core Worlds, and even Coruscant was overrun.
However, the tide turned in the Republic's favor when the Jedi learned of the Imperial invasion. The Jedi came out of isolation to combat the dark side threat poised to conquer the galaxy, giving the Republic much needed reinforcements. Together, the Republic and Jedi drove the Sith out of known space. After the war, the Senate petitioned the Jedi Council to make a permanent alliance, giving the Jedi the site of a Sith shrine on Coruscant to build a fortress to protect the planet. Instead, the Jedi built their first Temple on Coruscant, establishing an alliance that would last for millenia.
Wars with the Sith[]
Many within the Republic hoped that the Great Sith War, as it became known, would be the last of its kind. However, it would be only the first of a dozen wars fought between the Republic and the Sith, colliqually known as the Sith Wars in Republic space. After their defeat in the Great Sith War, the Sith-Imperial survivors retreated back to their core territories, which remained unknown to the Republic. There, they rebuilt their forces and launched a second campaign against the Republic, later known as the Second Sith War, in 4,768 BBY. Though the Republic was once again able to repel the Sith invasion, the Empire continued to survive in secret, allowing them to continuously return to attack the Republic.

Behind the scenes[]
The Republic of Systems was invented by the author as a canon version of the Old Republic for the Star Wars: Old Republic fanon series. Unlike Legends, the Old Republic is a seperate entity from the Galactic Republic.
