Sir Renamo Kemset COD was a male Nei who, as a young man, killed the pirate and Nightside Raiders leader Kilwyo Kesh.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Born on Irimor in 89 ABY, Renamo was still a child during the Great Liberation. He had intended to find work in the Tetrarchy government as a child, but when the Tetrarchy was defeated, he found himself adrift. Never more than an average student or athlete, he took a series of jobs waiting tables and serving in customer service. He got a job as a clerk for Harnro Shipping and moved away from home, but was laid off when Harnro cut back some operations.
The fateful night[]
Stranded on Vedros IV in 109 ABY, Renamo took a few part-time jobs to make ends meet, trying to save up enough to return home. He began courting Fiducia Crassim, a Nei girl who served at the Miner's Daughter, and went to the bar one night hoping to chat with her. While waiting for his food, he noticed a raucous crowd of tough-looking aliens with an entire piece of the bar to themselves. When he went to order a drink at the bar, he heard some of the tough men calling the Synnott among them "Killie"; staring for a moment, he recognized Kilwyo Kesh.
Like many Royal citizens, Renamo was aware of Queen Rin Sakaros's proclamation that Kesh was an Enemy of the Empire, though it clearly had not inspired any citizens to take up the crusade. Catching Renamo staring, Kesh called the young Nei on it; stammering, Renamo tried to walk away quickly, but the Raiders accompanying Kesh knocked his drink out of his hand, slapped him around, and finally kicked him away back to his chair.
As the men laughed, Renamo sat back in his chair, humiliated. He wished someone would do something about Kesh, but aside from some sympathetic looks, he received no help from the patrons. As he sat trying to clean himself up, Fiducia began receiving catcalls from Kesh's throng of underlings, and one slapped her, too. Though it was not Kesh, it was obvious to Renamo that Kesh's presence had inspired the whole episode.
Wishing again that someone would do something, Renamo realized no one was going to challenge Kesh. Frustrated and indignant, he drew the small utility vibro-cutter he carried for his job stocking and unloading crates in a warehouse. Fully expecting to die but wanting to finally do something with his life, Renamo stepped up behind Kesh, grabbed him by his long hair, and stabbed him three times in the back.
As Kesh gasped and bled out, his colleagues were momentarily shocked. As they rallied to rush Renamo, the bartender, having witnessed the scene, swung a bottle of ale into a Zyked pirate's face, breaking his snout. In the ensuing Brawl at the Miner's Daughter, nearly everyone was wounded, but Renamo's action inspired many of the patrons to get involved, and the Nightside Raiders found themselves swamped. Several were killed before local law enforcement finally arrived.
Later life[]
Hospitalized for his wounds, Renamo emerged after two days to find a Centurion of the Order of Keltrayu guarding his door. By order of the Consul of Vedros IV, he had not been publicly identified for fear of reprisal from the Nightside Raiders, but he was invited to the Sith Star. Rin Sakaros personally made him a Companion of the Order of Distinction for his heroism and gave him a generous financial reward.
Renamo returned to Irimor, though he kept in touch with Fiducia on Vedros IV. Though she had been wounded and scarred during the brawl, she greatly admired Renamo; he had become something of a local legend in the city. Since the media continued its blackout of his real name, he had received the sobriquet, "the man who killed Kilwyo Kesh". Renamo and Fiducia kept up their correspondence over the next several years, with touches of romance seasoning the friendly relationship.
Initially overwhelmed by his newfound wealth, Renamo lost a good deal of it in frivolous spending and gambling, as well as briefly dating a series of women. After the Nightside Raiders were eradicated by the Royal Navy, Renamo became more open with the fact that he had killed Kesh. It was Fiducia who urged him toward moderation in the midst of his excesses, and finally came to find him in a casino on Classaeria. Confronting him bluntly with how much he had squandered—both money and good name—she stormed out, and a deeply humiliated Renamo followed her and apologized.
The two decided to try their friendship again, and quickly became closer than friends. Using the money Renamo had left and Fiducia's savings, they opened a restaurant on Classaeria itself. The restaurant prospered, and Renamo and Fiducia were eventually married. They had at least four children. Though Renamo would admit having killed Kesh if asked, he no longer boasted about the feat or took formal interviews.
Behind the scenes[]
Renamo's nickname, "the man who killed Kilwyo Kesh", is based on the 1962 Western classic The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
