Raven Kaivalt was a male Human Jedi Knight and a noble member of House Pelagia.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Raven and his twin sister Raina were their father's only children; their mother, Tenja, died when they were small. Though born and raised on Inimă Eserzennae on Pelagon in the Tapani sector, capital of House Pelagia (of which Raven and Raina were members), Raven refused to follow many other Pelagia Jedi in defending only the Tapani sector. Instead, he swore fealty to the entire Galactic Republic, as did Raina, vexing their father, Miklato.
Raven and Raina were the great-grandchildren of Donarius Kaivalt, a Jedi Master who was a legend of the Order even almost a century after his death at the Battle of Mizra. Both labored under the expectation of legendary skill and achievements themselves, and Raven took very seriously the obligation to prove himself worthy of his ancestor's legacy. Like his father and sister, he was fond of Bernius, a droid which served their family and had originally belonged to Donarius.
Catastrophe at Anaxes[]
In 1,387 BBY, Raven accompanied Supreme Chancellor Phnyong to Anaxes as a bodyguard while Phnyong attended the Republic Navy War College graduation ball; Raina remained on Coruscant with the Vice Chancellor. Despite precautions by Raven and the other Jedi present, the ball was infiltrated by Anzati from the Brotherhood of Shadows, the Dark Vanguard, and Darth Alecto. Raven and Doli Umbgul dueled Third Herf; both were injured, but Raven killed the Vanguardian. Raven then went to the aid of Narasi Rican and Phnyong's last Senate Guard, dueling and killing Third Aurek as well. Despite his valor, Raven was unable to save Phnyong, who had been poisoned by Alecto.
Milagro[]
Raven was on Pelagon in 1,386 BBY when Tirien called on behalf of Mali Darakhan, who was preparing a campaign to assault and liberate Milagro. Mali sought the aid of the Tapani, and Raven agreed to do what he could. He convinced his father to champion the cause, and Jedi Lord Chiron Brascel dispatched ships under the command of Baron Obveluus Gonzed IV to the mission. Having been taught tactics and strategy as a young man, Raven sought a division-level command; when Mali refused, citing his lack of real experience, Raven accepted a company command. He led his company during the brief but intense fighting for Milagro.
Raven was part of Mali's effort to maintain the peace in the wake of the invasion, and led the investigation into the murder of a Rogeum Spaceport Authority Police officer. Raven was also an unofficial member of Mali's circle of advisors, and participated in the discussion that ended with Mali declaring martial law and executing Kysl Ssron for murder. Raven and Raina often debated Mali's actions and the pace of the Milagro War Crimes Tribunal in private, but because Raina was serving as a Tribunal judge, she made no public comments.
Gasald's Threat[]
When Mali was reassigned back to the north front of the war against Valin Aresh, Raven remained on Milagro to help Prime Minister Zemma Rufos and Republic Administrator Khofin of Knylenn. However, he returned to Pelagon after the Battle of Eriadu; he was on his homeworld when Tirien and Narasi, whom Raven had believed lost at Eriadu, finally made contact. Against Raven's advice, Tirien went to Eriadu to look for survivors, though his group—Tirien himself, Narasi, Zaella Sabir, and Jirdo Yushari—succeeded in rescuing Yan Razam.
The group took shelter at Inimă Eserzennae, where they received the High Council's order to stay in place pending a defensive strategy, but Tirien and Yan persuaded Raven of the advisability of an assassination mission against Gasald. Raven and Raina split over the issue, and in the following weeks, they struggled to reconcile their tight bond with their wildly divergent views of right and wrong. Raven also grappled with the realization that he—a member of House Pelagia, which had a reputation for honor and loyalty to oaths—was effectively betraying the oath he had sworn to the High Council, and might be cast out from the Order, the Tapani sector, or both.
High Lord Chiron Brascel authorized the mission, and a group of Tapani Jedi agreed to go, including Raven's cousin Gaebrean and Brascel himself. As Yan became more focused on the preparation for and result of killing Gasald than planning the details of the mission, Raven became Tirien's foremost counselor, and the two strategized often. Raven did not always agree with Tirien and Yan's harsh training methods, but went along with them so as to be ready. He also counseled Raina to open herself up to Zaella, a former Sith apprentice Tirien and Narasi were trying to redeem.
When the mission launched, Raven accompanied Zaella, Tirien, and Bernius aboard the Allanteen Six shipyards, where they discovered Gasald was expecting them. Nonetheless, the group made it aboard the Kiss of Death and reached Gasald's throne room, only to discover that two of their number—Lord Lezascan Wisté and his former Padawan, Sir Kobold Baliss—had betrayed them, hoping Gasald would spare the Tapani sector. A battle erupted, during which Raven dueled Celop Faro until Baliss killed Gaebrean.
Fighting his grief, Raven stabbed Faro in the neck, then went to confront Baliss rather than letting Narasi or Zaella fight him. Raven disarmed Baliss, who had been unhinged by Wisté's death and that of his son Amaani Wisté, Baliss's best friend; he tried to recover his fallen lightsaber, and Raven killed him. A badly maimed Gasald escaped, but the rest of the team had succeeded in sabotaging the Kiss of Death, and Raven carried his brother's body back to the Second Chance. The group escaped to Pelagon, and Raven spent days trying to process his grief. When Tirien swore a Barash vow and went into exile, though, Raven declined an offer to accompany him, feeling he needed to find his own path as a Jedi.
Lost and Loss[]
Raven spent months struggling with the conflict between what he felt was right and his duty to the Order. House Pelagia's emphasis on honor and holding to oaths caused him additional distress. He and Raina also grew distant, each struggling individually. When Miklato became High Lord of House Pelagia, however, Raina and Raven rebuilt their relationship, and mutually resolved to explore their history by journeying to Mizra. Unable to talk them out of it, Miklato sent Bernius with them instead.
The twins and Bernius reached Mizra successfully and journeyed into the Mizra badlands, the site of the ancient battle, where they received visions of Donarius Kaivalt's last stand and death. They were attacked by a force of Hashniajid, but prevailed in the encounter. When they returned to Pelagon, however, they discovered that Darths Alecto and Shakelli had burned Inimă Eserzennae and killed Miklato and Vinton, though Darth Alecto had spared Renata. Kaelora refused to allow the twins to blame themselves, and they resolved to continue in their work for the Order.
Kaelora became High Lady of House Pelagia, and successfully negotiated with the Jedi Council for Raina to become Jedi Watchman of the Tapani sector. Raven, meanwhile, was assigned to Gavhys Narfulk's fleet in the fight against Darth Hokhtan.
Orleon[]
In late 1,385 BBY, Raven was assigned to the Mission to Orleon to capture or kill Darth Hokhtan. He spent much of the long pursuit across Orleon's surface wondering why Narfulk had assigned him to the mission, though most of the other Jedi believed he was a natural choice, given his involvement at Allanteen. The Jedi finally forced a fight with Hokhtan and his guards after a week of pursuit, but Darth Alecto arrived and intervened. She and Raven dueled inconclusively before Wastin Quoi Force-pushed Raven into a river to save his life.
Raven was seriously injured by the fall and the current, but he was rescued by an Orleoni fisherman and convalesced in the man's home for two months, waiting for Sith pursuit to die out, before escaping Orleon.
Powers and Abilities[]
Like nearly all Tapani Jedi, Raven was trained in Form II, but he was better than most; while the Allanteen strike team was preparing on Pelagon, Raven emerged as equal to his sister Raina and only slightly less skillful than Tirien Kal-Di, and on the Kiss of Death, he easily dispatched Celop Faro and killed Sir Kobold Baliss, himself a better-than-average swordsman. Raven also won two duels against Vanguardians on Anaxes, though not without taking a blow, and the second with help.
Appearance and Personality[]
Raven had brown skin and dark hair which he kept close-cropped; he and Raina inherited their father's thin nose. Raven usually wore a goatee without a mustache, and dressed in House Pelagia's colors, though off Pelagon he often wore Jedi robes as well. He carried a curved-hilt lightsaber with a green blade.
Raven was conscious of the expectations of him as a descendant of Donarius Kaivalt, and strove to live up to them, though he sometimes felt torn between competing loyalties to the Tapani sector and the Jedi Order. When the issue of assassinating Gasald came up, Raven was willing to defy the High Council to do what he felt was right where Raina was not; the two siblings, who were of like mind on many important things, struggled with the divide between them.
Raven was fond of his sister's Padawan Renata, and he was on good terms with many other Jedi, including Tirien Kal-Di and Mali Darakhan, both of whom thought highly of him in turn.
