Old Republic era

Raina Kaivalt was a female Human Jedi Knight who lived during the New Sith Wars.

Biography[]

Early Service[]

Raina, like her twin brother Raven, was a descendant of Jedi Master Donarius Kaivalt, a Jedi hero who had died at the Battle of Mizra, and both sought to live up to his legacy. Raina's mother, Tenja, died when she was a small child. In her youth she was trained by her father, Miklato, not only in the Force, but in leadership and battle tactics and strategy. The Kaivalt twins both elected to serve the entire Republic as Jedi rather than swearing fealty to the Jedi Lords of the Tapani sector, to their father's frustration.

In 1,387 BBY, Raina remained on Coruscant as a bodyguard for Vice Chancellor Vero Corruss while Raven went with Supreme Chancellor Phnyong to Anaxes. After Phnyong was assassinated, Raina stayed with Corruss while he served as Acting Chancellor until the election of Supreme Chancellor Nulu Thini.

Judge Kaivalt[]

In 1,386 BBY, at the request of High Lord Chiron Brascel, Raina took Tapani commoner Renata Cul'Caritas as her Padawan. Raina, Renata, and Raven all joined Baron Obveluus Gonzed IV in leading a Tapani force to join Mali Darakhan's assault on Milagro. Denied her request for a division-level command, Raina chose to serve on Mali's command staff to get firsthand experience at that level. She and Renata participated in Mali's blitz attack on Rogeum, Milagro's capital.

In the wake of the invasion, Raina was among the advisors in Mali's hodgepodge of politicians, Milagro Resistance leaders, and Republic-aligned commanders and bureaucrats. At Mali's recommendation, the provisional government appointed her a judge in the Milagro War Crimes Tribunal. As such, she took no part in the government thereafter, though she and Raven often debated in private; Raina was particularly critical of Mali's decision to invoke martial law to justify his execution of Kysl Ssron. Raina often outsourced Renata to Mali or other Jedi during this time so her Padawan would get broader experience.

After months of trial and deliberation, Raina, like the other judges, voted to convict collaborationist Prime Minister Deordis Bevrelles and condemn him to death.

Holding to Her Oath[]

Near the end of 1,386, Vedya Gasald and Darshkére ambushed and destroyed the Seventy-Second Republic Battle Group at the Battle of Eriadu. Raina, Raven, and Renata returned to Pelagon to defend their homeworld against possible further Sith threats. Six days after Eriadu, Tirien Kal-Di arrived on Pelagon seeking shelter, along with his Padawan Narasi Rican, fellow Knight Yan Razam, former Sith apprentice Zaella Sabir, and Jedi Service Corps deserter Jirdo Yushari.

The High Council rejected the notion of a counterattack, ordering the Jedi to remain on Pelagon and await further orders. Raina was as disappointed as the rest, but when Tirien and Yan pitched a plan to assassinate Gasald before she could wreak more havoc, and Raven and Raina split on the question—Raven felt striking down Gasald was the greater good, where Raina felt that, having sworn to obey the High Council as part of her Knighthood, she was honor-bound to obey even orders she did not understand or agree with. Lord Brascel allowed the Pelagia Jedi to go if they chose, and even decided to go himself, but Raina, like Miklato, held to her decision not to. Raina and Raven struggled with the gulf between them on such an important moral question, and Raina also feared for her brother; House Pelagia prided itself on honor and loyalty to one's word, and she wondered if the House's leadership, already less than fond of the twins for their oath to the Jedi Order, might take the pretext to exile Raven for violating that very oath.

Zaella Sabir proved just as vexatious to Raina. Raina was suspicious and distrustful of the former Sith, doubting how "former" the status really was, and she became even less fond of Zaella after she badly thrashed Renata in a sparring session. Tirien was too annoyed to confront her directly, but he complained to Raven, who suggested Raina's coldness might actually work against any possibility of redeeming Zaella. Raina slowly let Renata participate in the strike team's preparations under her watchful eye, but only when Tirien did confront her did she reach out to Zaella, showing her the Kaivalts' private Jedi shrine, where they kept Donarius Kaivalt's lightsaber.

Raina grew concerned about the team's increasing brutality in training, feeling it strayed close to Sith methodology. She failed to persuade her brother to stay, nor could he persuade her to go, but when the strike team did leave, Raina realized how much losing Raven would crush her. Wrestling with her conscience all night, she finally broke down and tried to convince Saikra Vaskolt to take the Milagro fleet to Allanteen Six as a diversion. Vaskolt refused, but Raina, already committed, contacted Mali Darakhan, prevailing on him to go behind Vaskolt's back and ask Essely Kalliot to take the Corellian ships instead. Mali, aware of Tirien's plan, agreed.

As it transpired, Miklato had also asked for help from Obveluus Gonzed, and Tirien's calls for aid to Kussam Bnodd and Argus Z'dar had also been answered, and the resulting pro-Republic coalition won a surprise victory at the Battle of Allanteen, abetted by the strike team, which successfully destroyed the Kiss of Death. Raven survived, but their cousin, Gaebrean, was killed by Sir Kobold Baliss. House Pelagia intended to cover up Baliss's treachery, and that of his master, Lord Lezascan Wisté; Raina was disgusted, but knew that she, as an untitled noble below the age of majority, was not yet in a position to act on it.

Ascension[]

Over the following months, Raina and Raven grew distant; Raina was concerned over her own reaction to Raven's mission, and that her fidelity to the Jedi could falter so easily when Raven was in danger. After Miklato became High Lord of House Pelagia, however, the twins reconnected. Deciding to let their heritage inform them, they resolved to visit Mizra. When Miklato could not convince them otherwise, he sent Bernius with them. Raina left Renata under her father's care.

Raina received multiple visions in the Mizra badlands which helped her reorient. She, Raven, and Bernius survived an attack by Hashniajid, but when they returned to Inimă Eserzennae, they found the house burned to the ground and Miklato and Vinton dead. Darth Alecto and Darth Shakelli had led a raid on the island, though Raina was confused to learn that Alecto had not only spared Renata's life, she had protected her when Caiphus Syde tried to rape her. Raina was devastated by her family's loss, but Kaelora encouraged her not to lose focus, and Raven supported her in becoming the new master of Inimă Eserzennae and Bernius.

The twins went to Coruscant to see the High Council, but Kaelora, now High Lady of House Pelagia, had already negotiated with Tem-Fol-Rytil, who appointed Raina Jedi Watchman of the Tapani sector, allowing her to stay close to home and support Kaelora while continuing to serve the Order.

Watchman[]

In 1,384 BBY, Tirien sold the knowledge of Wisté's and Baliss's treachery to Sorin Ruy'the in exchange for the location of the Breld Syndicate. Raina was annoyed at the development, but understood Tirien's reasoning and appreciated the forewarning so the Kaivalts could minimize the damage if Sorin resold the information.

As Watchman, Raina policed the Tapani sector, but worked to maintain the delicate balance between her duty to Coruscant and her relations with the Tapani Noble Houses. She also, with Kaelora's occasional input, oversaw the work of architects drafting plans for a rebuilt Inimă Eserzennae. Early the next year, Raina and Renata attended a joint security summit between the Tapani—led by Obveluus Gonzed, Fir Jesacort, and Churlanius Lee—and a Corellian delegation headed by Mali Darakhan. Though Raina was present only as an observer, she and Mali both sparred and conversed during a break in the summit, sharing their thoughts on matters ranging from Black Sun and Renata to Mali's burgeoning relationship with Kadelle Chun.

As part of his plan to root out the Rebirth conspiracy, Tirien Kal-Di (by way of Mali) enlisted Raina to locate a cortosis shipment in the Tapani sector. Raina and Renata successfully captured the cortosis, but were unable to track down any of the conspiracy's agents, leading Raina to theorize that one or more of the Tapani noble houses were involved.

Powers and Abilities[]

Raina trained to expertise in Form II, and was more skillful than even most Tapani Jedi, all of whom were Makashi stylists. She occasionally wielded a shoto in her off hand for deflection. She was her brother's equal in lightsaber combat and Force skills, though her two-blade style of Makashi sometimes gave her an edge over beings who had never encountered it before. Her Force bond with Raven amplified both their skills when they fought as a team.

Appearance and Personality[]

Raina had brown skin and shoulder-length, wavy black hair. She usually wore Jedi robes off Pelagon and Pelagia colors onworld, though in both settings she often favored a cape which she wore over her left side, both for fashion and to conceal her lightsabers, both of which had green blades.

Raina had a strong sense of right and wrong and moral commitment; on Milagro, she believed a just and impartial judiciary was more important than swift verdicts, and while her allies planned to assassinate Gasald, she refused to participate out of commitment to her oath to the High Council. She was closest with Raven, and uneasy when they found themselves on opposite sides of a major issue. She was also close with her cousins Kaelora, Cesylee, and Gaebrean, and loved and respected her father, Miklato.

Raina took her responsibility to train Renata very seriously, and she was often demanding and unemotive with her Padawan, though out of a desire to forge Renata into the best Jedi she could be. However, during the lead-up to the Battle of Allanteen, both Raven (subtly) and Tirien (directly) accused her of coldness and callousness to Zaella Sabir, to the point of actually driving Zaella away from the light side. Though she had strong feelings on the subject, Raina was able to admit when she was wrong and amend her course if she felt that was right.
