R5-C3, often referred to as R5, was an R5-series astromech droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton and sold to the Galactic Empire. At some point it was placed in service to Lieutenant Delof Terallo, and accompanied him on a mission to Yavin 4.

Biography[]

Constructed in a factory during the reign of the Galactic Empire, R5-C3 was built as part of an astromech droid line intended for budget buyers, and therefore had less capabilities than other R-series droids. The Empire purchased the droid and it eventually came into the possession of Delof Terallo, a lieutenant in the Imperial Army, and often accompanied him on missions. Delof refused to wipe the droid's memory as often as the Empire recommended which led to the droid developing a strong overbearing sense of loyalty to him.

In 3 ABY, Terallo, alongside Sergeant Zekk Ryen, was dispatched to Yavin 4 to find any usable leftover devices or machinery from the numerous conflicts that had taken place in recent years. R5 joined them and, when they discovered a cavern filled with Massassi warriors, the droid used its flashlight to illuminate the chamber. When the ancient soldiers killed Ryen, Terallo and his droid fled further into the cavern where they encountered a strange artifact. R5 attempted to interact with it, but was unable to find any way to open it. When the Sith Lord Darth Syrinn revealed herself as the gatekeeper of the artefact, a Sith holocron, the droid stayed well away while Lieutenant Terallo interacted with it.

After Terallo was offered the chance to become a Sith Lord under Syrinn's tutelage, he called in the Imperial Reclamation Service to recover the holocron. He was greeted by Inquisitor Wupera Kavos, who told him that he knew too much already and stabbed him with her lightsaber, before noticing the droid clinging to the wall of the cavern chamber and taking it with her as Terallo lay dying. When they finally exited the cavern, the droid turned back to see that Delof had disappeared, therefore believing he may have been able to survive.

Kavos took R5-C3 to her debriefing with Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod, who ordered Ensign Ravus Coddera to take the droid to the repair center to wipe his memory in preparation for reassignment to a new master. However, R5 chose to stay loyal to his master and stunned the ensign with electricity and escaped the Star Destroyer in a starfighter he piloted, pretending to be a janitorial droid along the way to reach the hangar. He opted to fly the starfighter to Coruscant to retrieve Darth Syrinn's Sith holocron from the Imperial Palace for his master; he was, however, discovered sneaking around the Reclamation Service vault and thrown out as the officers believed he belonged to a spy, so he instead chose to follow a familiar signal from Yavin 4. This led him to his master, as well as Twi'lek Dija Kullias, who was in a lightsaber duel with Kavos; he was clearly going to be defeated so R5 interjected by stunning Wupera which allowed his master to strike her down and escape.
