Phnyong was a male Verpine Jedi Master during the New Sith Wars. As a young Jedi he served alongside Eviar Seldec before Seldec turned to the dark side and became the apprentice of Valin Aresh. At some point prior to 1,392 BBY, Phnyong served on both the Council of Reconciliation and the Jedi High Council. In 1,392 he was elected Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, continuing a trend of electing Jedi Chancellors which would continue unabated until the Ruusan Reformations. He considered Senator Glavial Iltek of Taanab an important ally and appointed Khofin of Knylenn his First Secretary, largely for Khofin's political acumen. He was re-elected in 1,388 BBY.
In 1,387 BBY, Phnyong attended the graduation ball at the Republic Navy War College on Anaxes. There he spoke with several political and military notables to gather support for increased military pressure against the Sith factions but, on both his own desire and the advice of Senator Iltek, also made the time to speak with Narasi Rican. Sensing the young Zygerrian's upset and correctly intuiting it was due to ill treatment from others because of her species, he gave her words of advice and encouragement before stepping away to speak to other senators.
Phnyong began to feel unwell, but before he was able to bring the matter to the attention of his Senate Guards, Narasi defended him against a surprise attack by Third Aurek. Quickly incapacitated by nausea, bodily pain, and vertigo, Phnyong was unable to take up his lightsaber and fight, but was able to use the last of his Force strength to telekinetically levitate one of the Guards' force pikes to protect Narasi from one of Third Aurek's blows. Raven Kaivalt came to Narasi's aid, but Phnyong was no longer conscious of his surroundings by the time they prevailed, choking and foaming at the mouth—he, like dozens of other guests, had fallen victim to a poison Darth Alecto had slipped into the wine at the ball. Phnyong died shortly after Third Aurek.
The Jedi Master's death devastated the morale of his Jedi protectors, all of whom blamed themselves for his death, and was a political catastrophe for the Republic. Alecto, by contrast, won considerable and lasting acclaim among the Sith and the Imperial military for having successfully assassinated Phnyong under the Republic's noses.
Appearance and Personality[]
Phnyong was tall and thin, like all Verpine, and had dark green, chitinous skin and black eyes. He usually wore Jedi robes tailored to his thin frame, though as Supreme Chancellor he wore more elaborate attire when necessary. He carried his lightsaber even as Chancellor, though he seldom had occasion to draw it even as a Jedi in the field.
All Jedi and most beings of other walks of life who knew Phnyong spoke highly of him, and he had a gift for putting others at ease and making them realize their value as individuals, not merely assets to the Republic. He was often noted for his genuine interest in people and his unflappable kindness and courtesy. His gentle, easygoing nature did not extend so far as political naivete, and he appointed capable advisors with political experience to give him informed counsel on matters with which he did not have firsthand experience.
