Ontuse Karaane was Human male born and raised on the Core World of Ralltiir in 30 BBY, preluding the fall of the Galactic Republic and rise of the Galactic Empire. After the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Ontuse's life took a dark turn, while he was still a young boy. During an attack on Ralltiir by a detachment of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the invading military forces killed Ontuse’s father. Vengeful, Ontuse decided to join the Grand Army of the Republic. However, he never received the chance to participate, as he had joined by the war's end.
Later in life, Ontuse had become a mercenary who had, for the most part, worked for the Galactic Empire. He wore a unique variant of the Phase II Clone Trooper armor used by the clones of the Galactic Republic before the rise of the Empire. He had made several modifications to his armor, including advanced HUD readings, a flame emitter, threat assessments, multiple, concealed weaponry, and even magnetized hard points. He had painted his armor black, and fitted his visor to shine blue—the colors of his home world.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Ontuse Karaane was born on Ralltiir two years after the Blockade of Naboo to Cale Karaane and Meresai Jocho, both of whom were natives of the planet. When Ontuse was a boy, his father was killed by separatist forces during the Clone Wars. Ontuse vowed to join the Grand Army of the Republic once he was old enough, much to the dismay of his mother who was not fond of the idea of putting the only member of her family she had left at risk during a time of war. Ontuse understood her concerns, but still told her that he would want to join when the time was right.
However, that time never came. At the end of the war, the separatist forces had been destroyed, the Republic had fallen and a Galactic Empire under the direct control of Emperor Palpatine had risen from the ashes in its place. Ontuse was devastated that he had missed his chance to avenge his father’s death, and while he did hear rumors of remnant rebel forces who were loyal to the Old Republic he knew it would not be the same, as the separatist forces were no more.
After three years, Ontuse could no longer hold back his lust for vengeance. When a group of rebel forces assaulted and attempted to occupy Ralltiir, Ontuse vowed to take out his rage on them, as they were rebels much like the Confederacy was. To do so, he made the decision to work with the forces of the Galactic Empire, albeit indirectly. He chose to become a bounty hunter and a mercenary, wanting his name to go down in history much like the name of Jango Fett. He agreed to do whatever the Empire asked of him, so long as the requests were inline with his moral compass. When he had officially joined, he parted ways from his mother and left Ralltiir for a new life. He never heard from his mother again.
Bounty hunting[]
Karaane gave the Empire all the information about the Rebel occupation on Raltiir, and was rewarded his first payment. He later found out that the Empire blockaded Ralltiir, and decimated the populace with Imperial Star Destroyers. Karaane worried about his mother, but not so much as to go back. He was living a new life now; a rewarding life.
The Empire started Karaane out with small jobs and small payments, none of which involved bounty hunting. Karaane occasionally worked for other clients, but proved loyal to the Empire. As he got better, the Empire gave him his first bounty mission. He was to track down and eliminate a Bothan leader named Dogh Gey'lic on the planet Kothlis. Ontuse found Gey'lic and shot him down with an old, yet efficient DC-16 sniper rifle he got off the black market. Once the Gey'lic was confirmed dead, Karaane got a large sum of credits from the Empire for his work in bounty hunting. Whenever the Empire needed Karaane, he would work for them.
Post Clone Wars[]
Karaane used his new credits to purchase an old, Phase II Clone Trooper armor off the Black Market. This armor made him feel like he did join the Republic for his father. The armor was white and has red markings on it. Karaane eventually painted it black and fitted his visor to shine blue, once he had the credits. These colors reminded him of his homeworld—Ralltiir.
As Karaane worked for the Empire over the years, he upgraded and advanced his arsenal. He purchased an A-11 Coruscant Police Repulsor Pack off the Black Market. He also had gotten several attachments for his Phase II Clone Trooper Armour. Although all this was good, Karaane's best purchase was a Ralltiir designed Tiger-class Starship he found on Carida. Primary weapons on the vessel included two front laser cannons, two back laser cannons, and a ball turret on the top that Karaane could personally operate. Karaane customized it to include concealed ion cannons, proton torpedo launchers, space bomb emitters, chaff dispensers, and targeting rangefinders. Although he did not name it right away, it later became known as the Corruptor.
Karaane survived through the events of the Galactic Civil War, which took place around 0 BBY. The Death Star was destroyed, which dealt a major the Galactic Empire. When contacted by the Empire, Karaane was requested to stop his current mission, which involved tracking down a notorious smuggler who had been giving the Empire trouble, and provide military assistance in the immediate attack on the Rebel base on Yavin IV. He was to be a special commando and infiltrate the Rebel base before an evacuation took place. Although Karaane had never abandoned a mission before, and was highly opposed to do so, he came straight to Yavin IV due to his loyalty to the Empire, a personality trait that would eventually lead to his downfall.
Karaane arrived at Yavin IV later than anticipated, since he was coming from the outer rim, but his assistance was still greatly appreciated. Although the Rebels were extremely weak, they still were a tough enemy to beat. Karaane was assigned a mission to infiltrate the Central Rebel Headquarters, located in a large Massassi temple, and cause as much damage as possible. Primary mission objectives included sabotaging all X-wings, Y-wings, and eliminating as much of the records held in their computers as possible. Karaane did manage to sabotage many Rebel aircraft, including two tuna boats, but failed at eliminating the records, as he gotten to Yavin IV to late, and the evacuation had already begun. Karaane did, however, eliminate a rebel anti-air gunner. He operated to turret, and took down several evacuation vehicles. Eventually, the last of the Rebel evacuation ships was gone, and only a small bit of opposition was left behind. It was a victory for the Empire. Karaane had to fight alongside Imperial Storm Troopers at one point in the battle, a feeling that made him feel like a true Imperial Shock Trooper.
After the evacuation of Yavin IV, not much happened in Karaane's life for a while. Karaane had some minor missions, but nothing new, nothing exiting. Darth Vader had been sending probes out to find where the Rebels had escaped to for quite some time. Nobody could find them. It is as if they disappeared right off the face of the galaxy. Karaane was given an assignment to investigate some supposed Rebel activity in the Saleucami system. So many false reports had been given that Vader did not have the time to waste time and resources to investigate himself.
Karaane looked up the Saleucami system in his datafiles. There were only two habitable planets in the system, and one had artificial gravity. Karaane checked out both planets. He ran probes everywhere on the planets. Nothing. The Rebels were not hearing anything. It had just been another false report. Karaane was going to run another probe run, just in case, when he got a Code 3 alert. He was to rendezvous with Lord Vader's flagship, the Executor, in the Hoth System. The Rebel base had been found and he was to meet with Vader himself in a mission to capture Han Solo.
Karaane was excited to finally experience what he considered "a real mission". Karaane looked at the time he had to be there, and realized there was no time. He had to be there now, and it would take at least half a day to get to Hoth. He left what he was doing, packed up, and left Saleucami, headed towards the Hoth System. Still, he decided to try, regardless. When Karaane arrived at Hoth, nobody was there. He was too late. He did not even bother sending out probes.
This unfortunate occurrence prevented Karaane from participating in the Battle of Hoth. Karaane lived on throughout the Imperial era and into the New Republic era. He became one of the best mercenaries working for the Imperial Remnant. When the New Republic came into power, he stayed loyal to the Imperial Remnants for years to come.
Physical appearance[]
As an adult, Karaane stood 2 meters tall. His hair was brown, and his eyes were brown.
Despite his weapon-laden suit of armor, Karaane was a subtle hunter and relied as much on his cunning and intelligence as opposed to using pure muscle and combat skill. Speaking with a raspy, gravelly voice, Karaane allowed few to see his face and even fewer to know his origins, giving the man a mysterious aura and a psychological edge over his prey.
Ontuse Karaane was born on Raltiir, a planet known for its habitants' brute physical power. Due to Karaane's emphasis on wit over muscle, Karaane does have a thinner build than most Raltiirs. Even with this thinner build, Karaane was usually operating at amazingly strong human fitness. He had enough strength to oppose a Trandoshan–another species known for their strength.
Personality[]
Karaane was not the typical "good guy". He was often found to be very cunning and witty. Throughout the many years of his bounty-hunting career, Karaane developed a strong sense of justice, moral obligation, and adhered to his own code of honor. He took only certain bounties that agreed with his own beliefs and brutal justice. However, to those few, he whole-heartedly devotes all of his skill should the occasion call for it. This led him to believe in a quick, clean kill. This is why he grew to favor the sniper rifle.
Karaane became an expert sharpshooter and had access to admirable weaponry. Despite having this high-tech arsenal, he was not dependent on it. In his search for The Verpine Shatter-Chief, Karaane had to capture him without his armor, equipped only with his natural skills and abilities. This was due to the magnetic fields on the Verpine compound. He was dedicated to whatever job he was doing, and would often suspend grudges if it meant completing his mission.
Karaane's father was killed when he was a boy. The events following that tragedy shaped and scarred his life forever, resulting in a man who never went anywhere without his armor. He paid close attention to all details and double-checked his surroundings to calculate the best option to solve a problem. This helped Karaane get the drop on the Ves'aa, stationed on Saleucami, who had placed a tracking device aboard his ship just prior to his decimation of the base.
Equipment and gear[]
Helmet[]
Ontuse Karaane's modified Phase II helmet recorded video and played it back on command, dispensed water, noticed minute sounds and amplified them and could connect with the onboard computer of the Corruptor.
Karaane could control weapons, sensors, and his jet pack with verbal commands, or by blinking his eye in certain locations. His helmet's HUD (heads-up-display) featured information on the surrounding environment as well as a 360-degree field of vision. In addition, advanced radar allowed his HUD to provide information on nearby locations, and could be used to scan the HoloNet and connect with databases. The macrobinocular viewplate could be magnified to allow Karaane to see great distances, and was equipped with, among other things, an infrared scanner that could be magnified up to 50 times. The infrared scanner magnified light up to 100 times or displayed heat gradations. The environmental filter system could filter out poisons and contaminants as well as provide Karaane with a two-hour reserve air tank. Karaane later upgraded his helmet in the post-Yavin IV years with the relatively new technology of the E.C.H.O. visor, which he took off of the helmet of an Espa Division operative he defeated. Karaane customized this new, curious device to fit his helmet, and it greatly aided him in his missions. To his knowledge, no one else knows that he owned the device, not even the Emperor, who gave him the assassination assignment.
Armor[]
Karaane's Kaminoan Phase II armor was constructed from plastoid-alloy composite; all sealed to a black body glove. All together, the armor weighed just less than forty kilograms. In spite of its bulkiness, the armor allowed for a reasonable range of motion. The armor's principle drawback, no doubt rooted in the Kaminoans' limited knowledge of Human anatomy, made the armor intensely uncomfortable to sit down in. Karaane could not manage to ignore this minor drawback and modified the armor so he could stay comfortable, even on long missions. Karaane made several modifications to his armor, including advanced HUD readings, flame emitters, threat assessments, multiple canceled weaponry, and even magnetized hard points.
Repulsorpack[]
Karaane wore a customized A-11 Coruscant Police Repulsor Pack. He painted it the colors of his suit. The fuel tank held enough fuel for one minute of continuous operation (20 three-second blasts). Each three second blast moved Karaane up to 100 meters horizontally or 7 meters vertically. Karaane could reach a top speed of 145 kilometers per hour with a maximum range of two kilometers. Directional thrusters featured gyrostabilizers to apply counterthrust for maneuvering and landing.
Weaponry[]
Karaane's main weapon was a DC-15/s blaster rifle, more powerful than a stormtrooper's E-11 blaster rifle. It could be outfitted with a scope for sniping, although Karaane also had a DC-16 sniper rifle. This was soon replaced with a more modern and advanced, Imperial E-24/i sniper rifle.
Ontuse Karaane used two different sidearms during his time as a mercenary. The first was a standard blaster pistol similar to those used by Coruscant Security Force. The other sidearm was a concussion disk launcher that included a second handle and storage compartment in the top for concealed weapons, such as micro-bombs.
Karaane's wrist gauntlets were a mounting point for many of his weapons. His left gauntlet had a seizo-12 miniature flame projector, which creates a cone of fire five meters long and one meter in diameter. Directly below this was the BlasTech Dur-24 wrist laser. Comparable to a blaster rifle in power, these wrist lasers had a range of 50 meters. Originally as an exposed attachment, he installed a retractable wrist bayonet for close combat.
Behind the scenes[]
Originally, Ontuse's name was Ontuse Fett and his story called for him to be the brother of Boba Fett. However, the author admitted that he believed the idea to be, quote, "stupid", so he changed the name to Ontuse Karaane. He also originally wore a black version of the Mandalorian armor worn by Jango Fett, Boba Fett and Jodo Kast.
The author of the article spent a great deal of time on images for the article. The main image was originally an image of an actual Clonetrooper from the 41st Elite Legion, though the author spent hours photoshopping it. He also made the picture of the helmet and the repulsor pack from scratch, and admitted that the repulsor pack looked somewhat fake. He had originally said that he would create a new version, though he never did so once he left Star Wars Fanon for his own reasons. The Tiger-class starship image was also actually a photoshopped version of Samus Aran's gunship from the video game Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
