The Octom Coalition, the OC or simply the Coalition, was a criminal syndicate in power during the Legacy and Unity eras.

History[]

Founding[]

The Octom Coalition was founded late in 66 ABY, towards to close of the Sith Crusade by several independent planets who feared being drawn into the Sith fold. Many of the planets had been unaffected by the war so far and would be incapable of defending themselves if the remained alone.

And so, around this time the governments of the planets Anzat, Togoria and many more realized that in order to even hope too survive the Sith they would need to become a single, strong alliance; and so the Octom Coalition was born. The Coalition soon came to the realization that even though they had become stronger united, they would never survive a Sith invasion, and so they decided that they would surrender to the Sith, on the condition that they retain their independence.

Although the Dark Lord Darth Abeonis agreed, he did impose some serious sanctions upon the Octom people. They had to pay taxes and provide a cut of their profits from any expenditure.

Seeds of dissent[]

Following the death of Abeonis in 121 ABY, the Coalition's troubles continued. Darth Proditor insisted that the payments continue through-out the Successors War, even going so far as to increase the amount needing to be payed. The Coalition agreed, building up their forces so that they could rebel against a weakened Decreton Empire following the war. Unfortunately for the Coalition, the Empire emerged from the War stronger than it had ever been before.

With Darth Krayt as Emperor, the Sith Order of Decreto became more centralized and more powerful than it had entered the war. Octa Nuun knew that it was only a matter of time before Krayt would need a new military campaign to keep the Sith Council on his side, and that the Octom Coalition would likely be a target.

War[]

In the year 160 ABY, a single Decreto-class Super Star Destroyer named Krayt's fist was escorting the two Hands, Darth Nihl and Darth Talon through Octom space when the vessel was attacked by a number of Coalition warships.

Although the warships stood no chance against the Krayt's fist, the message was clear. The Coalition wanted independence, and believed it could get it. Upon informing Darth Krayt of the attack a few hours later, Nihl was ordered to wipe the Octom Coalition out.

Three battles and a year later, and the Octom Coalition had been destroyed and its Octa, Nuun had been killed.

Economy[]

The Octom Coalition had a very complex and diverse economy. Following the Sith Crusade, the Coalition started a process of stabilization and expansion of the economy. While the economic changes saw dramatic changes for the Coalitions population, it had little effect on the galactic economy, as witnessed in the virtual non-existence of inflation.

The Coalition became a haven for smugglers, pirates and rebels that needed to escape Sith control. Smuggling brought well over three-quarters of the Coalitions income and it quickly became the largest "non-official" government in the galaxy, out ranking organizations like those of Jorj Car'das, Quelev Tapper, Talon Karrde, or Booster Terrik.

After the fracturing of the dissolution of the Coalition in 161 ABY, the many different currencies the Coalition enjoyed were completely wiped out, in favor of the Decreton Lira.

Society and culture[]

The culture of the Octom Coalition was non-ascetic and maximalist. During its rather short existence, the Coalition particularly brutal in the suppression of artistic culture, as it was primarily interested in military and political dominance. It's leaders believed that the entire government should be focused towards achieving independence from the Sith, even at the cost of losing its national identity.

The Coalition emphasized Human and, to a lesser extent, humanoid supremacy, with other alien species subjected to second-class; legislation legalizing the persecution of aliens was passed. As a result, the vast majority of the government officials were composed of humans, with only rare exceptions climbing in the ranks. Some argue that while the Coalition was unquestionably xenophobic, there is little to suggest that the first few Octa's themselves were. In fact, some believe that the privy councilors and advisors that filled the Octa's court and ran the Coalition on a day-to-day basis were the xenophobes.

Military[]

The Octom Coalition's military was greatly intertwined with the everyday government. responsible for carrying out military operations throughout the Coalition's space, as well as maintaining order on member worlds and colonies.
