The New Sith War, known to the Mandalorians as the Neo-Crusade, was the thirteenth and final conflict between the Republic of Systems and the Sith Empire. The war was the culmination of an elaborate plan by the Sith Emperor to eliminate all galactic powers and force-users other than himself in the galaxy.
As part of his plans, the Emperor orchestrated the Mandalorian Crusade to weaken the Republic and Jedi Order, and to bring powerful Jedi Knight Arek Varn towards the dark side. After the Crusade, he lured Varn to Korriban and turned him into a Sith Lord, along with his Jedi allies. Now known as Darth Revan, Varn was sent by the Emperor to lead the Imperial Military in conquering the Republic. Revan and Darth Malak, a close friend of Varn as Jedi, made alliances with the Zygerrian Slave Empire and the Mandalorians before beginning a massive invasion along the Republic's northern borders, starting with the remote but important Jedi world of Ossus.
The Empire had the advantage over the Republic, which was severely weakened by the costly war with Mandalore. Ultilizing his extensive knowledge of Republic strategies, Revan led a highly effective campaign through Republic space, capturing vast swathes of territory and cutting off the Core Worlds. The campaign came to a head with Operation: Tuk'ata's Heart, which saw the invasion and conquest of the entire Core. Republic forces were drawn away from Coruscant by simultaneous attacks on Alderaan, Kuat, and Hosnian Prime. This allowed Imperial forces to take Coruscant itself, killing everyone in the Jedi Temple and Senate Building and subsequently razing much of the city-planet. However, the battle saw both Revan and Malak betray the Emperor; Malak attempted to kill Revan and pinned it on the Emperor and Brotherhood of Darkness, starting his own Sith faction, while Revan survived the assassination attempt and was rescued by Bastila Shan, ultimately abandoning his Sith title.
Malak's betrayal led to the Sith Civil War, which crippled the Imperial war effort. Meanwhile, Jedi and Republic survivors formed the Army of Light, who used Varn's inside knowledge of the Empire to gain the upper hand. Both the Zygerrian and the Sith Empires were torn apart by revolts across the galaxy, and the Army of Light was able to retake Coruscant in a massive battle, during which the Mandalorians withdrew from the war after Malak betrayed them. With the war coming to a close, the Emperor influenced the warring factions to come to Korriban, where he would destroy them all with a superweapon. The battle would not go how the Emperor had planned; Darth Bane, disillusioned as a result of the civil war, decided to activate the Emperor's weapon prematurely, killing everything on the surface and allowing Bane to escape undetected.
The remaining Jedi believed the Sith to be extinct, when in fact Bane had escaped with his apprentice to Exegol, where he would create the Rule of Two to prevent another Sith Civil War. After the war, what remained of the Republic of Systems was reorganized into the Galactic Republic on Coruscant. The galaxy would experience a millenium without major conflict for 1,006 years until the start of the Clone Wars.
