The New Republic was a government set up by General Alix Balan in 19 BBY, the commander of the Republic Liberation Army—a unit of defectors from the Galactic Republic that fought for the Separatists. When the Confederacy of Independent Systems was dissolved and the Republic reformed into the Galactic Empire, the RLA kept fighting. Balan formed a transitional government called the Committee for Liberation of the Republic. However, his base fell under siege from the newly formed Imperial Army. He was killed days after creating the New Republic, and his troops fought to the last man.
