The New Jedi Order, also known as the Knights Jedi, was a secret society and religious chivalric order devoted to the Force that succeeded the Old Jedi Order in the New Republic Era. Founded after the fall of the First Galactic Empire by Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, the order was sworn to the light and bound by creed to serve as peacekeepers across the galaxy and protectors of the meek, just as the Jedi of old once had. Cognizance of the Great Purge as well as the events leading up to it induced revisions in both the Jedi's traditions and tactical doctrine to ensure the order's security―Jedi Knights operated under the utmost secrecy, keeping their affiliations and operations hidden from the wider public; with the exceptions of a small few, the galaxy would be unaware of the Jedi's very existence.
The New Jedi Order was officially established fifteen years after the Battle of Yavin on the planet Tython in an event remembered to time as the First Knighting, in which Luke Skywalker bestowed knighthood upon his original class of graduating students.
