Old Republic eraRise of the Empire era

Tyrants everywhere create their own enemies. In this case, the Empire created us.
Antidar Madakor

The New Democratic Republic, also known simply as the New Republic, was a government created by the joining of rogue Imperial Admiral Antidar Madakor's breakaway faction and Mon Mothma's Alliance to Restore the Republic. It was one of the most powerful governments in the galaxy and was on equal terms with the Galactic Empire.

History[]

Formation[]

The New Republic was born in blood. Following the destruction of the Death Star over Yavin IV, Head of Imperial Intelligence Admiral Antidar Madakor chose to take his considerably powerful armada and swiftly take over Eriadu and all of the Seswenna Sector. After a vicious battle between himself and Admiral Thrawn resulted in defeat for the Empire, the survival of Madakor's New Republic was assured. Once word of the battle spread, Madakor merged his faction with Mon Mothma's Rebel Alliance, creating a powerful government headed by the latter and an equally powerful military headed by Grand Admiral Ackbar.

Galactic Civil War/War to End the Empire[]

Emperor Palpatine was enraged by the creation of the New Republic and would not hear of any talk of peace. The Empire continued to try and reassert control of the galaxy. It and its supporters continued to call the conflict a "Civil War", refusing to recognize the New Republic as a legitimate entity, while the New Republic and its supporters referred to it as the "War to End the Empire", the "Freedom War", or the "End War". Since the creation of the New Republic, the Empire has attacked it numerous times, and although they had one victory, most of their efforts had failed due to the strength of the Grand Army and Grand Navy. With the Third Battle of Jabiim, the New Republic gained complete control of the Outer Rim. Despite the fact that they possessed such a powerful military, Madakor was against a potentially costly invasion of the Empire without the help of the Jedi. Both the Empire and Madakor raced to find the fabled Jedi Sanctuary.

Government and Politics[]

The New Republic was a bi-party system consisting of the Freedom Party and the Peace Party. The Freedom Party held the majority and consisted of supporters of the then-defunct Rebel Alliance. The Peace Party consisted mainly of pacifists and Imperial sympathizers, and had little popular support. Most military personnel were encouraged to stay out of politics for fear that political interests would conflict with the war effort, although most, when asked, voiced support for the Freedom Party.

Republic Senate[]

The Republic Senate, closely modeled after the Old Republic's Galactic Senate, consisted of Senators from every member system that was democratically elected. They could formulate bills and laws; although the Chancellor usually had the final say on whether such a bill would become law, a three-quarter majority vote from the Senate could override the Chancellor. In extreme times, the Senate could grant the Chancellor emergency powers, but could also remove those powers by a three-quarter majority vote. If they believed that the Chancellor was no longer adequately performing the duties of his/her office, the Senate could remove him/her from power by a three-quarter majority no-confidence vote, in which case the Deputy Chancellor would take over until a new Chancellor was elected.

Office of the Chancellor[]

The Chancellor was the most powerful individual in the New Republic. He/she was the Commander-in-Chief of the military and usually had the final say on whether bills could become laws. In extreme times the Chancellor could receive emergency powers from the Senate, and had the authority to declare martial law and suspend the Senate. However, according to the New Republic Constitution, a state of martial law could exist for only four years, after which the Chancellor had to ask the Senate's permission to declare it again, something that could only be approved by a simple majority. In case a Chancellor was killed or died in office, the Deputy Chancellor automatically took over. If a Chancellor was dismissed, the Deputy stayed in office until a new Chancellor was elected. A Chancellor's term lasted for five years, and an individual could only serve two terms.

Ministry of Defense[]

The Ministry of Defense encompassed three arms of the military: The Grand Army of the New Republic, the Grand Navy of the New Republic, and the Office of New Republic Intelligence. They were abbreviated as GANR, GNNR and ONRI, respectively. The head of the ministry was the highest ranking officer in the military. Decisions were made by a group of senior officers called the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest ranking officers of the Army, Navy and ONRI.

Economy[]

The New Republic's economy had been boosted by the capture of the Outer Rim, and Muunilist in particular was a major financial center. However, the cost of maintaining the military had put significant strain on the economy, and the currency of the New Republic, the Republic Credit (ReC), had only half the value of the Imperial Credit. As such, Imperial Credits (ImC) were still used in the New Democratic Republic's early years.

Society and Culture[]

Much of the New Republic's society and culture reflected that of the Old Republic. The New Republic Constitution's Rights of Sentient Species clause expressly forbade humanocentrist policies, and humanocentrist activities and organizations were banned. Racial and gender-based discrimination was forbidden by the same clause, and such discrimination was punishable by law. Slavery was also expressly forbidden. The Right to Beliefs allowed every citizen to practice any religion.

Military[]

The New Republic needs a strong military to convince our enemies that attacking us is a bad idea.
Brigadier General Cody

The Grand Army of the New Republic[]

The first army personnel of the New Republic were the clone troopers of the 7th Sky Corp under then-Marshal Commander Cody (CC-2224). Their ranks were soon bolstered by soldiers from the Rebel Alliance. Although the GANR was based off the Grand Army of the Republic, the Army and the Navy were separated into their own branches. They utilized the equipment that the GAR used, and also some new equipment as well. The standard primary weapon for the GANR was the DC-16A2 rifle, and the standard side-arm was the DC-15f. The GANR's primary walker was the All Terrain Tactical Enforcer Mark III, or AT-TE. The Mark III was an updated version of the Clone Wars-era walker. However, some armored regiments used the All Terrain Armored Transport, or the AT-AT. The AT-AT, being a symbol of the might of the Imperial Army, was used only in a limited fashion and interplanetary politics hampered its deployment; for example, the decision was made by General Jan Dodonna not to include AT-ATs during the liberation of Jabiim. The Advanced Recon Commandos and Republic Commandos fell under the jurisdiction of ONRI, although they were technically part of the Army.

The highest rank in the Army was five-star General or General of the Army, equivalent to the rank of Grand Admiral of the Navy. No one held the five-star General rank, but it was rumored that Jan Dodonna, a four-star General, would have been promoted should anything have happened to the existing Grand Admiral, the Mon Calamari genius Ackbar.

It was to be noted that while the 7th Sky Corp continued to call itself a Corp, in fact by the time of the formation of the New Democratic Republic it had swollen to well over a million troopers, more than even a Systems Army.

  • DC-15S Blaster Carbine
  • DC-15f Blaster Pistol
  • PLEX-MAV/AW Rocket Launcher
  • DC-15X Sniper Rifle
  • Type 12 Combat Vibro-Blade
  • PLEX-SAM Anti-Air Rocket Launcher

Structure of the GANR[]

The structure of the GANR, while similar to the GAR, had quite a few differences. The system had yet to be fully implemented.

  • Grand Army of the New Republic: 15 Systems Armies, a total of 4,915,200 troops, with the Chancellor as Commander in Chief.
  • Systems Army: 2 Sector Armies (327,680 troops) led by a General (4-star or 5-star).
  • Sector Army: 4 Corps (163,840 troops) led by a 3-star General.
  • Corps: 4 Brigades (40,960 troops) led by a 2-star General.
  • Brigade: 4 Regiments (10,240 troops) led by a Brigadier General, with a Colonel as XO.
  • Regiment: 4 Battalions (2,560 troops) led by a Marshal Commander, with a Lieutenant Colonel as XO.
  • Battalion: 4 Companies (640 troops) led by a Commander, with a Major as XO.
  • Company: 4 Platoons (160 troops) led by a Captain, with a 1st Lieutenant as XO.
  • Platoon: 4 Squads (40 troops) led by a 2nd Lieutenant, with a Sergeant Major as XO.
  • Squad: 9 troops led by a Sergeant, with a Lance Corporal as XO.

The Grand Navy of the New Republic[]

The Navy was arguably the most powerful branch of the military, consisting of over two thousand vessels. The first iteration of the GNNR was the Blood Fleet (now known as the Liberty Fleet) under then-Admiral Madakor. The Liberty Fleet, also referred officially as the First Republic Fleet, was still under Madakor's command and still transports the 7th Sky Corp. The standard vessel of the GNNR was the Venator II-Class Star Destroyer. Some of its most famous vessels included the Spirit of Fire, Guarlara and Pride of the Republic.

Rank Structure of the GNNR[]

Ranks were as follows for the GNNR, from highest to lowest:

New Republic Marine Corp[]

The NRMC was under the jurisdiction of the GNNR, and was responsible both for ship security and boarding actions on enemy vessels. Occasionally, the NRMC undertook planetary invasions or interventions. The standard weapons for the NRMC were much different from the GANR: the standard weapon was the DC-6A4 Carbine, and the standard Sidearm was the DC-16f. The DC-6A4 was a highly modular weapon, and most Marines attached an underslung 40mm Grenade Launcher. The DC-16f Sidearm was the successor of the Army's DC-15f, and had a lower overheat rate, allowing for more shots to be fired in a row. Marine snipers still used the DC-15X as their sniper rifle of choice, although a few units had started to test the E-11SR. The NRMC's main light armored unit was the T2B Tank, and their main heavy armor was the T4B. However, the T2B was being phased out for the AT-AP, or the All Terrain Attack Pod, a three-legged walker with more firepower. The T4B was also slated to be replaced by the UT-AT, the Unstable Terrain Armored Transport. These new units granted the Marines increased capability to negotiate uneven terrain. The AT-TE was not used by the NRMC. The Marines preferred the HTT-26 Heavy Troop Transport dropship to the Army's LAAT models, but the HTT-26 didn't have half of the LAAT's firepower. While resilient to damage, and equipped with a shield generator (something no LAAT model had), the HTT-26 suffered from low speed, making it an easy target for anti-aircraft weapons and enemy fighters. It was equipped with a single rapid-fire blaster cannon, which was effective against infantry and light armor. The Marines did operate their own air wing, the MAW (Marine Air Wing) that consisted mainly of the venerable T-65 X-Wing. The HTT-26 dropships were operated by the MAW, and were slated to be replaced by the Multi-Altitude-Armored-Transport or MAAT, a four-winged version of the Army's LAAT that was capable of traveling great distances across space and could also exit an atmosphere, unlike the LAAT. The MAAT also had a heavier armament and traveled much faster than the HTT-26, although at the expense of armor and shielding.

Standard Weapons of the NRMC

  • DC-6A4 Blaster Carbine
  • DC-16f Plaster Pistol
  • DC-15X Sniper Rifle
  • E-11SR Sniper Rifle
  • PLEX-MPAA Rocket Launcher
  • Type 12 Combat Vibro-Blade

Structure of the NRMC was as follows, from smallest to largest:

  • Fire Team: Three Marines led by a Corporal. (4 Marines)
  • Squad: Two Fire Teams led by a Sergeant. (8 Marines)
  • Platoon: Three squads, a GNNR Corpsman, a Platoon Sergeant, and a Platoon Commander. A weapons platoon would substitute for the squads a 60mm mortar section, an assault section, and a medium machine gun section. It was led by a 2nd Lieutenant, with a Sergeant Major as XO. (28 Marines)
  • Company: Three rifle platoons, a weapons platoon, and support staff. A weapons company would substitute for the rifle platoons an 81 mm mortar platoon, an anti-armor platoon, and a heavy machine gun platoon. There was also a Headquarters and Service Company, consisting of a headquarters platoon, a communications platoon, a service platoon, and the Battalion Aid Station. It was led by a Captain, with a 1st Lieutenant as XO. (114 Marines)
  • Battalion: Three rifle companies, one weapons company, and one Headquarters and Service Company, commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel with a Major as XO. (916 Marines)
  • Regiment: Three battalions, led by a Colonel. (2,749 Marines)
  • Division: Three infantry regiments and an artillery regiment, commanded by a Major General. (10,997 Marines)

The Office of New Republic Intelligence[]

The Office of New Republic Intelligence was the Ministry of Defense's primary intelligence gathering body, and handled many black-ops operations. Espionage and counter-espionage were its primary functions, and ONRI had spies all over the galaxy.

Astrography[]

The New Republic controlled all of the Outer Rim and a few Core Worlds. Its capital was Eriadu, which was famous for being the "Coruscant of the Outer Rim", and housed the Chancellor's Residence, the Senate Building, and the Ministry of Defense.
