There is a popular saying that "anything can be bought on Neroth." Fanciful and amusing, certainly, but true. Our laws are... relaxed compared to the restrictions of the Republic and the Empire. We care little for morality; mere words that get in the way of pleasure and amusement. Whatever your heart desires, you can find here.
—Darth Titania

Neroth was an aquatic planet in the Tapalar system, located in Wild Space. Located close to the border with the Unknown Regions, Neroth languished in obscurity as a lonely backwater for centuries. It was later claimed, settled and developed by the Sith Lord known as Darth Titania.

During the Galactic War, Neroth was the heart and capital of the so-called Titaniate and a member-state of the Brotherhood of Raiskus. Despite such an association with the Sith, very few remnants of the planet's Sith legacy and Titania's governance remained by the time of the Clone Wars and later Galactic Civil War.

Regardless of the time period, Neroth's lasting reputation was that of a thriving world awash in riches, where virtually everything was legal. It stood apart from other Sith-controlled worlds due to its lenient, progressive society and government that fostered cooperation and equity. Neroth was a popular, if distant, tourist destination renowned for its safety, unspoiled natural beauty, and the glamorous and luxurious atmosphere of rampant hedonism.

Description[]

The landmass on Neroth consisted of scattered archipelagoes and island chains.

Welcome to paradise.
—Brochure slogan

An aquatic planet, Neroth's surface was almost entirely covered by water.

Neroth's vast seas and position on the inner life zone resulted in a planet-wide equatorial band. With a perfectly circular orbit and no axial tilt, Neroth was locked in perpetual summer. As such the climate was hot and humid, with an average temperature of 37 degrees standard. Neroth was predisposed to sustained periods of rain, and seasonal monsoons raged across the planet every year, but planet-wide weather control systems tempered such inclement weather.

Neroth was orbited by two barren moons: Gulon and Tirroth.

Famed as an opulent and decadent "pleasure planet", Neroth seemed more like a member of the Core Worlds than a Wild Space planet. Travel brochures hailed it as a "paradise" and a "tropical gem", an "island amongst far stars." Nevertheless, its positioning placed it on the frontier of the known galaxy.

Geography[]

With over 95% of its surface covered by salt water, Neroth was dominated by vast tropical seas. The planet's meager landmass consisted of scattered island archipelagoes and atolls. The lack of abundant landmass made habitation and development difficult and costly, as the tropical islands were covered by dense jungle or mountains. As a result, the habitation zones and cities were built to accommodate such limited space, rising vertically or able to float partially or in full on the waves.

Due to the lack of land, terrestrial lifeforms were the minority on Neroth, but the oceans teemed with life and supported dazzling, thriving ecosystems. The oceans were home to biomes such as spectacular coral reefs, tranquil lagoons, sprawling meadows of seagrass and kelp forests.

Fauna[]

Native lifeforms ranged from microbial organisms to truly titanic megafauna. Terrestrial organisms displayed at least partially amphibious traits, capable of surviving on land or in the abundant sources of water.

Species of coral formed vibrant and spectacular reefs, some of which stretched for many miles.

History[]

Prehistory[]

Neroth was first discovered by Old Republic probes many centuries before the Great Galactic War. While lush and supportive of life, Neroth's lack of habitable land, abundant resources, and location prevented any serious colonization efforts. As a result, the planet languished in obscurity, barely catalogued as anything more than an obscure frontier world on star-charts.

Settlement[]

Titania "discovered" the planet due to extensive searching for an unclaimed world. When her probes found the waterworld, she immediately began the transition of her base of operations from Nar Shaddaa to Neroth. The move was completed during the height of the Revanite crisis. During this time, Neroth was scarcely inhabited and had not undergone expansive urbanization: the so-called settlements were little more than staging grounds, bases, and supply depots for Titania's resources. Titania fell in love with the beauty of the planet and originally intended to turn Neroth into a private retreat for herself and her family. In time, the expansion of Titania's power and responsibility within the Brotherhood of Raiskus required her to construct a base of operations for herself and her power sphere. Construction of the capital city, Luo, began shortly.

Inhabitants[]

Neroth had no native sentient species.

Humans, by and large, formed the majority of the immigrated species. There were significant enclaves of various aquatic species, including Ishi Tib, Karkarodons, Mon Calamari and Quarren, and Selkath, drawn to Neroth by the aquatic environment. Other immigrated species included Ithorians, Rodians, Twi'lek, and Zabrak.

Due to being a member state of the Brotherhood of Raiskus, small populations of Sith Purebloods lived on the planet for a time, as well as other species and cultures from other Brotherhood worlds. By the time of the Clone Wars, however, virtually no traces of the Sith population remained.

Government and culture[]

Under the rule of Titania, Neroth's government was a technocratic oligarchy in which the Sith Lady held absolute power. While the undisputed ruler of Neroth, Titania was nevertheless quite different than her Sith peers. Rather than being a tyrannical despot who ruled through terror and oppression, Titania instead fostered cooperation and equity. Neroth's citizenry were given wide freedoms, including certain freedoms otherwise prohibited on other worlds, and enjoyed a quality of life that rivaled even members of the Core Worlds. Titana was exceptionally open-minded and progressive for a Sith. Slavery was expressly outlawed, as well as all other forms of servitude. Any species was welcome on the planet, with the widespread humanocentrism and discrimination in the Empire being prohibited; in a similar vein, AI and droids were granted citizenship and rights afforded to any organic being.

Neroth's culture was famous (or, perhaps, infamous) for its laissez-faire attitude that rivaled planets such as Zeltros.

While there were laws and regulations, a massive variety of substances, contraband or activities that were outright illegal or of dubious legal status elsewhere were legal on the planet. Practically every variety of spice and other drugs were legal but regulated, to ensure safety. Prostitution was similarly legal and regulated.

Locations[]

Coral Sea[]

Halcyon Islands[]

A small archipelago nestled between Kumai and Nohi. The islands were quiet, free of large habitation centers, and were mainly agricultural.

Luo[]

Main article: Luo (city)
Luo was the largest city on the planet and functioned as Neroth's capital. Initially a staging point for Titania and her forces, Luo rapidly expanded as the Sith Lady directed planetary development. Special care was taken with the city's construction and the native environment was impacted as little as possible. Because of this, Luo served as a model for all future urban development on the planet. It was a glittering metropolis, surrounded by pristine blue water.

Pleasure Islands[]

Main article: Pleasure Islands
The Pleasure Islands were an archipelago of islands considered too small for serious urban development or habitation. Instead, they were converted into luxury resorts, away from the bustling metropolises elsewhere on the planet.

Behind the scenes[]

Neroth was heavily inspired by Manaan, the Star Trek planet Risa, the Mass Effect planets Illium and Virmire, and Planet 4546B from Subnautica. The urban setting and culture of Neroth was heavily inspired by various works of cyberpunk media, most notably William Gibson's Sprawl trilogy, and the Netrunner/Android: Netrunner trading card game. Many of the geographical features on the planet drew inspiration from famous locations in the real world: the Great Barrier Reef, the Hawaiian Islands, Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, the Phi Phi Islands of Thailand, and the island of Bora Bora.
