Muriel Bangs was a moisture farmer in Nowhere, Timberang. She and her husband, Eustace Bangs, adopted and raised the orphaned dog Courage. Muriel often used a rolling pin to hit Eustace on the head. She frequently rocked Courage in a rocking chair.
