The Morsian calendar was the official method of date recording for the Morsian people and underwent various changes after its inception. The first calendar used the date of the foundation of the Morsian capital, Volcanesis Magna, as its starting date. It was an easily understood reference point that the Morsians used to start recording dates. This persisted for many millennia until the time of planetary unification under the Morsian Empire. Due to the momentous occasion of unifying the whole planet under their rule, it was decided that the calendar should be changed to reflect it, and so dating was switched over to this new method. A third change came when the Morsians joined the Galactic Republic and it was decided that the calendar date should be changed for this. However, it only lasted for a few millennia before the Morsians left the Republic on bad terms, and the calendar was reverted back to its prior dating method of planetary unification.

History[]

Before the calendar[]

The Morsian people had no dating system prior to the invention of the calendar, and simply lived day by day and using the seasons to keep record of important events. However, with the foundation of Volcanesis Magna, they decided that it would be a good starting point to keep a more accurate date of events.

First calendar[]

The first calendar came a while after the foundation of the settlement due to it not being a priority, or invented, at the time of foundation. However, as the Morsians began to want to keep some basic records of events, they realized that the seasons were not the most accurate way to keep record. As such, a basic calendar began to be developed around the seasonal structure. However, there was no agreed beginning date for the start of the calendar to root it, and several ideas were thought of for a starting point. Eventually it was decided that the foundation of the Morsian capital would be a perfect start point, and so it was chosen.

The dating system used "Before the Foundation of Volcanesis Magna" and "After the Foundation of Volcanesis Magna" as its starting point, with zero on this calendar being equal to 20,000 BBY. In Old Morsian these translated to "Ante Fundamentum Volcanesis Magna" and "Post Fundamentum Volcanesis Magna", abbreviated to "AFVM" and "PFVM" respectively.

Second calendar[]

Small revisions were undertaken to the first calendar but for the most part it endured for many millennia until the eventual unification of Mors under the Morsian Empire. It was a momentous occasion and one which the Morsian people had been largely striving towards for around 7,000 years, whether they were aware of it or not. Various celebrations occurred after this time and an idea was suggested to reconfigure the calendar to accept the date of planetary unification as its new starting date. After some consideration, the idea was agreed upon and the new calendar used the date of the peace deal that unified the planet as its start year.

The dating system used "Before Planetary Unification" and "After Planetary Unification" as its starting point, with zero on this calendar being equal to 13,200 BBY. In Old Morsian these translated to "Ante Planetarium Adunationem" and "Post Planetarium Adunationem", abbreviated to "APA" and "PPA" respectively.

Third calendar[]

A third, shorter-lived, calendar was created upon the Morsian Empire joining the Galactic Republic. It was a momentous occasion as the Morsians had been attempting to join the Republic for a number of years before they were finally admitted a space. To celebrate the occasion, the emperor decreed that a new calendar would go into effect, beginning at the day when the Morsians joined the Republic. For several millennia the calendar was used, during which time the Morsians were firm members of the Republic. However, following the Morsian exit from the Old Republic, the two split on very poor terms. To symbolize the split further, it was decided to revert the calendar back to the previous one.

The dating system used "Before Joining the Republic" and "Joining the Republic" as its starting point, with zero on this calendar being equal to 9,000 BBY. In Old Morsian these translated to "Ante Reipublicae Coniungens" and "Reipublicae Coniungens", abbreviated to "APA" and "PPA" respectively.
