The Morsian army of the First Republic, also known as the Republican Army, First Republican Army, or Morsian Republic Army, was the military forces of the First Morsian Republic. It was an evolution of the Morsian army of the Dictatorship which saw expansion and restructuring several times during its near 100 year existence.
Following a poor start when the republic formed at the end of the Third Morsian Civil War in 16,126 BBY, the army found itself extremely undermanned, under equipped, and inadequate at defending the Morsian borders. The civil war had destroyed most of the legions that had served in the army previously and those that remained were greatly undermanned, with several consisting of barely a few hundred active soldiers. In addition, all standardization that had been established for the army of the dictatorship had disappeared, with legions consisting of a mash of various weapons and equipment. Some had spearmen, others had none, some used a mixture of rectangular shields and ovular ones while others had even more variants. It took over ten years for the army to begin to be rebuilt after the period of instability that had graced the rise of the republic.
Reform came in the form of Scipio Farr'anax and his Farranaxian reforms which heavily changed the army for its early to middle existence. He introduced spearmen into the army as an official unit type as well as attached an artillery group and mounted units to the legions to further diversify their abilities to fight different enemies. Alongside this he also standardized the pay for soldiers, introduced state supplied equipment, and set up retirement infrastructure for solders after they left the army.
Under the Republic, the army expanded further in the amount of legions it contained which helped to project and cement Morsian power across Virconis.
