The Military Police was a law enforcement organization within the Republic Military that was active by the time of the Clone Wars. It could be authorized by the Galactic Senate to take over an investigation if clone troopers and/or other military personnel were involved. In regions near the front lines, Military Police units acted as the main law enforcers, overriding the local civilian police. As the conflict progressed, the Supreme Chancellor gave the Military Police more and more powers, to the point where the organization essentially became his political police. The Ministry of Defense resented that fact but did not have the authority to stop it.
