Miles Astin was an honest man, who was just trying to make a difference in the universe. The way he saw the most fit was military service. He quickly began to see the corruption and wrongdoings his "beloved" Galactic Empire took part in. While on leave, he met the 142nd mobile espionage on a recruitment trip. He abandoned the Empire completely in one quick decision, and joined the Rebel Alliance. He served with the 142nd under Commander Jones, and alongside Rae Venn, Kyle Katarn and Plethrauh Hime, up until the collapse of Empire and the end of the war.

Following the Galactic Civil War, Astin was reassigned to an administration position within the New Republic directly related to the demilitarization of the government. During this time, Miles got married. By 11 ABY, he retired early from the military to raise his newborn son. While Astin was away tending to his retirement however, his son was kidnapped and his wife was killed by the Imperial Remnant. Driven to madness, he spent the next 10 years looking for his son.

After a crucial discovery on a botched mission, Miles was assassinated. He died with the knowledge of his son's designation, FN-2187, and died heartbroken at the notion his son never even had a name.
