Meglumine was a mostly desert planet in the Inner Rim Territories. The world was known for having large amounts of mineral resources, though the majority of them were located very deep in the planet's mantle; making them difficult to reach. Originally discovered by the Rakata around 28,000 BBY, the world had no native sentient species, until the Infinite Empire brought human slaves to colonize the world. They were used for mining what minerals were available in the crust, until the collapse of the Empire. The slaves had little Rakatan supervision, so becoming independent was not difficult for them after the Empire's collapse. Over the next several thousand years, the former slaves, now colonists, expanded all over the planet, and began more extensive mining, largely using Rakatan technology.

In 18,749 BBY, the administration that acted as the government was vastly reformed, and the Meglumine Unitary Republic was founded. The new government made contact with the Galactic Republic after Jedi explorers located the world. Meglumine began extensive trading with Republic planets, and others. Technology to create hyperspace-capable starships was also given to them by the Galactic Republic. The Unitary Republic existed fully until around 3,670 BBY, when the reconstituted Sith Empire invaded the planet. Afterwards, it existed as a government in-exile based on Salik, a planet in a nearby system. In 3,654 BBY, Meglumine became independent from the Sith Empire after a massive uprising. The Unitary Republic's leadership returned to their homeworld.

The planet saw little conflict after that, leading up to the Separatist Crisis. The Unitary Republic, one of the oldest governments in the galaxy by that point, was falling apart, due to corruption and economic failure. In 24 BBY, the Meglumine Revolution occurred, and the old government was replaced by a new administration, known as the Meglumine People's Republic. However, the Republic quickly became a dictatorship under Giorgi Makashvili, a politican. The People's Republic provided the rising Confederacy of Independent Systems with minerals, and thus, the CIS began supporting the new regime. Makashvili used battle droids to enforce his rule more than the Meglumine People's Army. The people became enraged over the years, and in 20 BBY, a military coup occurred by the People's Army, led by General Iosif Stalashvili.

The coup was not as successful as hoped, and the CIS intervened. They established a CIS-led military administration, that gave no rights to the natives. Stalashvili was forced to flee the capitol, Tvilopol, and began an insurgency against the occupying forces. The CIS was defeated in mid 19 BBY as the Galactic Republic liberated the area, and Stalashvili's forces were aided by clone troopers. The newly established Meglumine Republic was short-lived, as it was overthrown by the Galactic Empire in 18 BBY, due to not allowing Imperial companies to exploit the world's mineral wealth. After the Imperial subjugation, a new government was formed called the "New Regime", which was led by the collaborationist Mikheil Nakharshvili.

The dictatorship lasted until 4 BBY, in which a large rebellion occurred, decimating the Imperial garrison. The collaborationist leader Nakharshvili was executed by mobs. Former general Stalashvili was elected as the president of the new Meglumine Federation. The Empire ignored the planet, deeming them to be no threat and planned on dealing with them later. The Federation pledged support for the newly formed Alliance to Restore the Republic in 2 BBY, and the Empire invaded the planet again. This time, it was still successful, though not as much as before. The Imperial Military only controlled Tvilopol and the area around the capitol. The rest of the planet was in a state of war with their Imperial occupiers. The insurgency began giving them heavy casualties.

In 3 ABY, the Empire withdrew, due to needing the troops elsewhere and also the heavy casualties. A new government was formed, again led by Stalashvili, called the Meglumine Union. However, he slowly made it a dictatorship, and by the time of the Battle of Endor, he had absolute dictatorial control of the planet. In a revolt, Stalasvhili was overthrown and killed. His government was replaced with a democratic republic led by Nikola Chekovdze, a democratically elected, former farmer. He had established relations between the New Republic and his Meglumine National Republic. His administration saw the rise of the economy after years of turmoil, increase in overall health and literacy of the population. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, the world was off of the war path of the extragalactic invaders. Chekovdze resigned in 33 ABY, due to failing health.

The National Republic continued to exist and enjoyed a prosperous era until 132 ABY, during the Second Imperial Civil War. Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire invaded the world for resources, just as many others before them. And just like the others, they faced a large resistance, and were forced to retreat in 135 ABY. The National Republic had been dissolved by Darth Krayt, and had been replaced with a Sith/Imperial led regime. The revolutionaries formed the Meglumine Coalition, which established relations with the Empire-in-exile, and provided troops to fight for Roan Fel. After the end of the conflict, the Coalition established relations with the newly created Galactic Federation Triumvirate.
