The term matron referred to the second of three life-stages of the Sa'ari species. Spanning from around three hundred years of age, this stage was characterized by the desire to settle down and raise a family. Matronhood typically ended around six hundred years of age, or later if the Sa'ari mated rarely, passing on to the matriarch stage.
Not all matron Sa'ari felt the need to remain at home and raise children, however. Some maintained their earlier lives of service or extroverted natures, which were hallmarks of the maiden stage, or became community and even national leaders as was characterized by the matriarchs.
