Mathis was a Human male and a Jedi Master in the decades prior to the Clone Wars. He took on Gruu Funkistann and trained him in the Jedi arts, and later trained Acura Krill. Mathis also carried a green lightsaber.
Biography[]
In 65 BBY, Ard Zil murdered a podracer named Morfit on Malastare. Jedi Master Mathis went in to investigate. Zil fled Malastare and hoped to hide on nearby Naboo, but Mathis followed. When the Jedi Master finally caught up with him in the swamplands, Zil was threatening to kill Gungan children, including the young Gruu Funkistann. Mathis was forced to kill Ard Zil to save the Gungans.
Mathis could sense the Force within Gruu, and, with the Gungan High Council's permission, took Gruu to Coruscant to be trained. Over the years, Mathis raised Gruu as if he was his own son, and eventually took him on as his Padawan.
Years later, while Mathis was training Acura Krill, he was also following a lead on the Sith. Twice, Mathis led the Jedi Council out to what appeared to be dead ends. They didn't find any trace of the Sith. Having led the Council on two different "wild goose chases", Mathis was on rocky ground with the Council.
Soon after, he and Acura were attacked by the Sisterhood of the Sith. The Sisterhood kidnapped Acura and attempted to brain-wash her into their hive mind organization. So Mathis contacted his former Padawan Gruu Funkistann for help in rescuing her.
They tracked her down on Nar Shaddaa and battled the Sisterhood to the death. While the Sisterhood members were killed, Mathis perished as well. His dying wish was to have Gruu retrain and take care of Acura.

Mathis was named after the literary version of Mathis from the 1953 James Bond novel Casino Royale.
