Rise of the Empire era

The Secret Galactic Intelligence Service (SGIS), commonly known as MI5, was an intelligence agency in the later years of the Old Republic, originally formed to assist the peace-keeping Jedi Order by handling non-Sith related criminal activity. MI5 field operatives were known as "Agents".

Led by a human male who held the title M, the organization consisted of agents drawn from such diverse backgrounds as smugglers, bounty hunters, ex-Republic soldiers and even Jedi. MI5 Headquarters was located on Coruscant and was the target of a fair number of attacks.

History[]

MI5–SMERSH War[]

Queenteresaa

Queen Teresaa

While many details about MI5's early years have yet to be revealed, it is known that Queen Teresaa of Naboo played an important role in its creation and personally contributed funding to establish the organization more than a decade prior to 32 BBY. The Queen would remain a stalwart supporter of MI5 before the Senate for years to come.

In 42 BBY, a team of MI5 agents headed to Ryloth to investigate the murder of a fellow agent. They soon came across a Sith named Wootsa who was working for a drug lord known as The Baron. MI5 quickly put a stop to his drug-trafficking business.

Soon after, word spread regarding a possible assassination attempt on Queen Teresaa of Naboo. So M sent his agents to Naboo to protect the Queen at all costs. The Queen ended up with a blaster wound but survived the encounter. MI5 later found out that a criminal organization, SMERSH, was behind it. SMERSH had attempted to eliminate the Queen in order to get revenge on MI5 for ending their drug-trafficking on Ryloth. That was also when MI5 captured Digika, who was later rebuilt and reprogrammed as a Technical Advisor for MI5.

Dr. Noah

The infamous Coruscant Bombings were due to yet another villain that MI5 had wronged while on Naboo. Adder masterminded the whole thing and planned on getting revenge on MI5. During the rebuilding process after the Bombings, MI5 tracked down and eliminated two more SMERSH operatives, Pots Putnyocus and Dr. Noah, by following the trail of their criminal activities.

Soon after, Agent Shasta Moonreaper prevented the theft of the Mereel sculpture aboard the Starport 15 passenger transport. The following year, Q'u Branch suffered damage when the plan to reprogram the SMERSH replica droid Digika went awry. Two years later, MI5 was responsible for securing the Empress of the Stars luxury cruise on it's maiden voyage.

The next year, Pandolfo Taproot rescued Senator Vogel Kell from their downed ship on Hoth. A month later, the capture of the arms dealer Klay led MI5 to Jaws and billionaire Jordo Drax. They learned of Drax's plans to wipe out and replace the InterGalactic Banking Clan so they killed him and blew up his space station. A couple weeks later, agent Jace Bont had a confrontation with the crazed criminal Haas Buck.

The following year, MI5 discovered that Gideon Roon had planted explosives throughout Aldera Stadium and planned to blow up 100,000 beings during the Federal League Limmie championship game. The droid QUAD was completed and joined the team of agents in eliminating Roon and disarming the bombs.

In 34 BBY, Bont and QUAD apprehended the thief Asho Luckbar. Soon after, Dr. Noah and some of his friends escaped from prison to get revenge against MI5. The agents eventually caught up with them on Khubeaie and recaptured them. During that mission, Europa Kapanen and QUAD assisted the small Jakku settlement Orca in battling the neighboring settlement Chevron.

The ice planet Rinnk

In 32 BBY, just prior to the Invasion of Naboo, SMERSH operative Jasper Fondorball used the Freya maintenance crew as cover to infiltrate MI5 Headquarters, shutting down it's security systems and holding it's personnel hostage. A handful of MI5 agents were able to get in and stop Jasper.

During his interrogation, Jasper gave up the location of SMERSH's hideout on the ice planet Rinnk. So the agents traveled to Rinnk to storm the hideout. They ended up killing SMERSH's leader Stavro and finally put an end to the criminal organization, ending the so-called MI5–SMERSH War.

Clone Wars[]

During the first few months of the Clone Wars, MI5 was sent to Nadiem to investigate the possible disappearance of Jedi General Sharkey. They managed to find Sharkey alive as well as an illegal cloning operation run by Finn Killifer. MI5 agents got Sharkey to safety and destroyed Killifer's cloning facility.

Organization[]

MI5 was headed by a man called M, although if he were incapacitated or otherwise unable to perform his duties the Coruscant Minister of Defense would take over until the original M could resume his office or was replaced by a new M. M reported and answered directly to the Senate on issues of policy and finance.

Below the office of M were the Chief of Staff, Technical Advisors and Mission Analysts, who were responsible for the direct supervision of agents in the field.

Q'u Branch, headed by the eponymous Q'u, was MI5's technical department, tasked with developing weapons and equipment for agents.

MI5 also contained a small Law Department at one point. E. Alan Bryce was one of its top lawyers and was responsible for the arrangements under which several criminals were released from incarceration in return for their service as agents.

Function[]

MI5 was responsible for dealing with major organized crime and galactic counter-terrorism. During the course of its investigations its agents uncovered the existence of SMERSH, a previously unknown and far-ranging criminal syndicate bent on galactic domination. Combating SMERSH quickly became MI5's top priority, although it still found time to face such opponents as Team Blood Trinity and XANA.

During the Clone Wars, MI5 aided the Republic in carrying out top secret, covert operations.

MI5 gradually developed a somewhat dubious reputation due to the extreme and often controversial tactics of its agents, many of whom were convicted felons. Although the organization did come to be feared and respected by its enemies, its methods led to criticism from the Jedi Council and may well have been responsible for an erosion of support in the Galactic Senate, which controlled the agency's budget. At various times MI5's continued existence seemed to be in doubt.

Because of the nature of its missions, working for (or even with) MI5 was often a fatal proposition, and agents who fell in the line of duty were memorialized on the walls of MI5 Headquarters.

Behind the scenes[]

MI5 was inspired by the fictionalized version of MI6 portrayed in the long-running James Bond film series for Dubya Scott's Star Wars... 007 Style series. It is not related to, or inspired by, the United Kingdom's real-world MI5 agency.
