Louis Ottug was a Human male from the planet Maynus. He was a general in the Maynian army and was the one who led the large group of Maynian soldiers into the Lahari forest during the Battle of Belaham and was among the soldiers who surrendered during the battle. After he surrendered, he was banished to the forests along with the other Maynian soldiers. Due to his involvement in the final battle and what his soldiers called poor leadership, he was banished from the outlying areas as well.
After being exiled from the Maynians, he returned to Jacen Gevorian II, where he served as a Gevorian war strategist until the death of Gevorian II. After the Grad's death, Ottug continued helping the city of Belaham and the surrounding regions. He died in 410 BBY after his encounter with a Hujeep plant proved fatal. Following his death, he was buried in the Gevorian graveyard and his hometown of Groften renamed their town-square after him.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Louis Ottug was born in the city of Groften in 480 BBY to Alaan and Alendra Ottug. From an early age, Louis displayed high intelligence and logic, which resulted in being recruited by the Maynian army in 469 BBY. After his army recruitment, he was trained in combat and was mentored by Orton Reyas, the Maynian army's top strategist. Orton took an interest in Ottug after the latter scored highest in the Maynian army's intelligence test. After his training, Ottug and his family were taken to the city of Belaham, where he met and befriended Syle Torrav, the son of Roggar Torrav, the Maynian leader at the time. After the two became friends, Ottug was added to Syle's protection squad. While Ottug saw few battles during this time, the two's friendship grew. Eventually, when Syle became the Maynian leader, Ottug held the highest military honor as Maynian Protector, though he still held the formal rank of general.
Civil war[]
During the civil war, Ottug remained the head of Syle Torrav's security unit, though he did participate in the second battle of the war, the Battle of Cypris. Though the Maynian army won the battle, they accidentally drank the Vandoid infected water and many soldiers became ill or died; Ottug was among the infected individuals. After the battle, the army returned to the Maynian capital of Belaham. There he retook his post as the head of security and did not fight in battle until the Battle under Culor, where he led the Maynian army to another victory.
Surrender[]
Louis Ottug: “Find and evacuate my parents, they're all I have.”
Soldier: “Sir, our reports say they defected about four years ago.”
Louis Ottug: “Damn…”
— Louis Ottug before heading into the Lahari forest during the Battle of Belaham.
In the final battle of the civil war, Ottug was put in charge of a large squad of soldiers. Under his command, the soldiers marched into the forest in an attempt to attack the weakened rebels, but they were ambushed and surrendered due to heavy losses. After his surrender and the Gevorian victory at Belaham, Ottug was banished to the forest along with the remnants of the Maynian army. In the forest, he was exiled by the Maynians, as they blamed him for being part of their loss in the war. Banished from both forest and kingdom, Ottug sneaked into the city of Calahari, where he met Grad Jacen Gevorian II. There, the two struck an alliance and Ottug eventually became a personal servant and strategist of Jacen Gevorian II.
Gevorian service[]
Under the command of Jacen Gevorian II, Louis Ottug would travel to the rear sector of Belaham in order to feed the poor and treat the sick. He also fought for the improvement of the rear sector as crime had risen since the civil war as many citizens still voiced their support for the Maynians. With the help of Louis, Gevorian II was able to improve the conditions of the rear sector. Ottug was also put in charge of leading the caravans out of the Lahari forest to help the surrounding cities of the growing empire.
When Jacen Gevorian II died, his son, Jacen Gevorian III, became Grad. Under Gevorian III, Ottug remained in charge of the caravans and continued his aid of the rear sector. However, his rank of strategist was revoked as the Grad claimed a war strategist was not needed in a time of peace. The Grad did receive negative feedback from Belaham's citizens, though, as they feared the impending war with those who opposed the monarchy.
Death[]
In 410 BBY, while en route to the city of Groften, Ottug came in contact with a Hujeep plant. The poisonous plant released toxins into his systems and he was rushed back to his home in Belaham palace. The lack of a cure for the poison resulted in Louis Ottug's death. Immediately after his death, Jacen Gevorian III began burial preparations and decided to bury him in the Gevorian graveyard, claiming it was what Gevorian II wanted.
Legacy[]
After his death, Louis Ottug was buried in the Gevorian graveyard, making him the first of non-Gevorian blood to be buried there. To honor his death, the city of Groften renamed their town-square after Louis, calling it Ottug Square. The rear sector residents requested to have their sector name changed to the Ottug sector, as the other sectors were named after what they called visionaries. Grad Jacen Gevorian III denied the request, stating that Ottug would not want to have his name disgraced. The rear sector displayed their anger at the statement by returning to the rebellious ways that Ottug had originally halted.
Personality and traits[]
Throughout his military career, Louis was described as a rash soldier but a composed strategist by his fellow Maynians. In the Battle under Culor, the Maynian soldiers, under the command of Ottug, charged the Gevorian rebels and killed a high number of the rebels. His strategies were also successful in the battles he did not participate in.
After he allied himself with the Gevorians, he came to respect his new leader, Jacen Gevorian II. This was due to the fact that his new leader had saved his life and given him a new life as a Gevorian. During his later years, Ottug became more composed and began to help the less fortunate.
Talents and abilities[]
Louis Ottug was trained in both combat and strategy by the Maynian army at a young age, allowing him to expand his knowledge of war and leading to him being awarded the title of Maynian Protector. After the Maynian army lost the civil war and Ottug was recruited by the Gevorians, he continued learning different war strategies, though he never had to use them as the government wasn't experiencing any attacks.
Behind the scenes[]
The reasoning behind Ottug's creation was that, as Bluethunder213 said, Syle Torrav needed a second in command. It was later that Bluethunder decided to make Louis surrender and eventually join the Gevorian side. Bluethunder knew that it would be illogical for the opposing side to accept a defector after a war's end, so he made Louis talented in his profession, though he tried not to make his character a Mary Sue.
Louis Ottug's likeness is based on the actor Christopher Eccleston and the character General Williams from the Mass Effect series. Christopher Eccleston is used to represent a younger Ottug, while General Williams is used for the elder years.
